Behind The Spotlight Chapter 112

As much as Lawrence hated Jolyne, it never reached the point where he wished the actress would get kidnapped or suffer any serious harm in real life. Besides, even though Jolyne seemed to be doing fine, Lawrence could see that she was still troubled beneath her carefully rehearsed smiles. They were both great at acting, and Lawrence could easily see through her facade.

So, even when Jolyne made fun of him and bragged about her increase in box office share, Lawrence didn't bother fighting back. He was mature enough to understand that the actress was just coping.

But Lawrence was wrong about one thing, Jolyne wasn't worried about the kidnapping incident, nor was she suffering from any lasting trauma. Sure, the kidnapping was scary, but she could have prevented it by hiring a bodyguard.

What Jolyne was truly worried about was her relationship with Arnold, a relationship she had carefully kept for years, only to slip up in a moment of weakness. She had made the mistake of showing her feelings too openly, letting her heart take control over her usual calculated demeanor. Now, things between them felt awkward, and she didn't know how to fix it without making matters worse.

As for the kidnappers, a father and son duo, they were sentenced to long prison terms with no chance of early release due to the severity of their crime. Producer Perberto and his son, a failed actor, would never appear in any respectable production again, their names forever tainted in the industry.

"Why are you looking at me like I'm some kind of hidden ace?" Collin asked, slightly tilting his head in confusion.

"So you're telling me you're not?" Axel asked seriously, without breaking eye contact. He was staring at Collin with awe because of the heroic deed Collin had done to save Jolyne, a deed Axel considered more fitting for a movie script than real life. Axel, a retired soldier, wasn't even sure if he could have done what Collin did under the same pressure and danger.

"I'm not," Collin said firmly with a small shrug, his tone flat, as if trying to downplay the whole thing.

After the incident, Collin became famous, and even his co-workers looked at him with respect whenever he walked past in the agency hallways. At first, he was happy and even amused by the sudden change in how people treated him. But as time went on, he began to feel uncomfortable being placed in the spotlight.

Unfortunately, he had to play along because this was the PR strategy the agency used to prevent the issue from spiraling out of control and to manage the narrative before gossip magazines twisted it further. Wash Dismay Studio also joined in on the PR effort to avoid being blamed for negligence on set and lapses in security.

Because of that, Collin was interviewed by TV reporters multiple times, answering the same repetitive questions until he could practically recite his responses in his sleep. His face ended up in newspapers across several regions.

Collin eventually spoke with the CEO, Lila Seraphina, who promised him a two-week vacation in December as a thank-you for cooperating with the publicity campaign. December was still eleven months away, but Collin was happy to get something positive out of the ordeal. Ah, the life of an agent, you have to negotiate for everything.

In truth, Collin preferred a longer vacation over money, since time away from work was priceless to him. He was already wealthy; what he needed more was time to rest, recharge, and live quietly. In his case, time was far more valuable than money.

'Money is useless if you don't have the time to use it... Bars.'

Today, Axel and Collin were once again in the hallway on the 3rd floor of Uni-versus Pictures. Axel was going to audition for one of the lead roles in Frightening Movie, looking both eager and nervous at the same time. He didn't care what role he got, as long as he could get back on screen.

He hadn't had a job for half a year because studios were afraid to hire him, worried about possible scandals. On top of that, his sponsors and brand deals had dropped him.

With no income, Axel was forced to cut back on expenses. Yet, just like before, he had no regrets. If he could go back in time, he would still make the same choices and face the same consequences without hesitation. Fighting for custody of his son was a battle worth everything.

Fortunately, Axel was friends with Wyatt, and the director personally invited him to audition for one of the lead roles despite the risk of backlash. Axel was grateful to have friends like Wyatt who supported him.

"What you read in the newspaper isn't true. I didn't kung-fu the assailant. I just threw my phone at him and kicked him in the stomach hard enough to make him faint," Collin explained.

"That's still impressive, especially when the assailant had a knife and the situation could have ended badly."

"... Yeah, I have to agree with that," Collin admitted reluctantly, realizing Axel had a point. It was impressive.

"Anyway, let's not talk about me. How's John? Is he doing alright?"

"Yeah, he's attending kindergarten. I also hired a maid to help me take care of him while I'm working. She's been a huge help in keeping things organized at my place," Axel said with a smile.

"The Asian woman I saw last time, that's the maid?" Collin recalled seeing a woman in Axel's apartment during a visit and remembered her polite demeanor.

"That's right. She's Filipina, a mother who has to work overseas to provide for her family back in the Philippines. She's nice and very dedicated to her job."

Collin nodded slowly, his expression softening. He didn't sense anything suspicious about the woman, so she was probably not a bad person at all.

"Collin, you don't have to worry. I know you're concerned about me, and you want to talk to Henry and Wyatt, but I'm confident this time. I've memorized every line in the script and rehearsed them countless times."

The movie had six lead roles, and Axel was aiming for the role of the tall character named Steve, a role he felt suited him perfectly.

He knew he wouldn't get a huge salary because of his scandal last year, but in his current situation, this was better than nothing. As long as he could star in another movie, he had no complaints. He was willing to start again from the bottom.

Besides, he wasn't lying about his confidence. Lately, he felt his acting skills improving, and he believed he could convince the production to cast him based on talent alone.

Collin nodded but remained silent, his thoughts shifting to the upcoming conversation with Henry. He knew Axel had awakened a talent, but that wasn't the main issue. The real problem was his recent scandal, Collin had to convince Henry that Axel wouldn't cause trouble during production and that everything would go smoothly.

'Henry has trauma with scandals, so I have to convince him hard and make him see that Axel is worth the risk. I also have to talk to Wyatt to help me.'

A few minutes later, the door opened, and the production crew announced a lunch break. Crew members stepped out to eat and stretch their limbs after a long morning of work.

Collin spotted Wyatt and Henry talking nearby. Henry glanced at Collin and Axel, sighing with a weary expression. He wasn't naive, he knew exactly what was going on and why Collin had approached him now.

"If you have something to say, follow us to the cafeteria. Let's talk while we eat, we all need a break."

"Of course."

Collin nodded and followed the producer and director, leaving Axel a bit nervous behind.

The group found their seats. Collin, Wyatt, and Henry were mostly eating pizza and donuts, each with a can of Coke in hand.

"Collin, I know the reason why you're here. I already discussed it with Wyatt. I'm against working with Axel Gunner. It's unfortunate what happened to him, but I have to prioritize the movie and make sure everything goes according to plan."

"Don't do this to me, Henry. You already worked with Axel in Week on a Cruise Ship. His work ethic is great, you even praised him back then during the celebration party. Give him another chance."

Collin had already expected Henry to be against casting Axel. The producer had bad experiences with scandals in the past and tended to avoid anything that could potentially damage the production's reputation.

But Collin couldn't let go of this opportunity. Axel was basically blacklisted by most of the industry. He needed to star in another movie to prove himself before the public completely forgot his name. Axel had to show that he was worth casting, that his past didn't define his future.

'We can't wait for the release of Face: Swap in summer. We should act while we can. Right now, we can audition for Frightening Movie and hopefully get a role,' Collin thought.

"I admit Axel is a great person, but that's not enough for me to abandon my principles. Besides, I'm not the only one against casting him. The representative from Uni-versus Pictures agreed with my decision. It's already a miracle that Axel Gunner even received an invitation to audition for the third round."

Collin didn't know what to say. He turned to Wyatt, and the director could only nod, a faint look of regret in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Collin. The only way to cast Axel is if we have a valid reason the higher-ups will accept," the director replied guiltily.

"It's alright, I don't blame you. You already helped Axel by recommending him. You're a great friend, Wyatt."

Collin had no intention of blaming Wyatt, he was just doing his job.

"It's not Axel's fault that his ex-wife is a bitch. He just did his best to protect his son." Collin turned to Henry, a frown etched on his face.

"We both know that, and I respect him for it. However, it's still true that he broke his last contract by initiating a custody battle. Touchpebbles Pictures asked him to postpone the case, but Axel didn't listen. He went through with it. Even if he's innocent, we can't have an actor who might be a liability. People sympathized with him, but sympathy isn't enough to convince us to risk millions of dollars."

"Then what if his performance is better than you expected?"

"Collin, let's be honest here. We worked with Axel two years ago, and his acting was just passable, nothing memorable. He's not bad, but he's also not great. If not for his connection to you and Wyatt, I wouldn't have even considered casting him. He's different from Lawrence Terrence, who can elevate every scene he's in."

"But what if his audition impresses you? Would you cast him then?"

"If his performance impresses me, I'll let go of my prejudice and cast him. But I'll add a clause in the contract stating that Axel will only receive his full salary once filming is complete and he hasn't caused any scandal or trouble from start to finish."

"You said it yourself. You should keep your promise." Collin's gaze was steady, his tone unwavering.

"Collin, Axel doesn't have the X-factor to convince us. Unless Lawrence possessed his body, Axel probably wouldn't get a role in this movie, no matter how much you want it." Henry's voice was firm.

"Then what about you, Wyatt?" Collin asked, his tone calm but challenging.

"I'm a director. I'm always looking for perfection. If Axel impresses me, I'll fight for him. I'll do my best to convince Henry and the Uni-versus Pictures representative, even if it means heated arguments."

Wyatt promised him. But just like Henry, he wasn't sure Axel could impress him. He had worked with Axel on two movies, and the man's performances had been decent but never remarkable, no defining moment that stood out.

"Then," Collin smirked confidently, "that's enough."

He stood abruptly.

"You must keep your promise. I'll wait until the audition is done because I know I'll have to negotiate Axel's salary today." Collin walked away with quick, purposeful strides.

"...Is your agent insane? Does he really think we'll cast Axel? Maybe being interviewed by the media made him arrogant enough to challenge studio politics," Henry muttered.

Wyatt stayed silent and took another bite of his pizza, unsure what to say. He, too, was confused about where Collin's confidence came from.

Collin left the cafeteria and returned to the waiting section in the hallway. He found Axel deeply focused, flipping through the script with furrowed brows. The studio had formally sent him a copy since Wyatt had invited him, so he had no excuse to pretend he didn't have a script or that he was unprepared.

"Axel, it's hard to convince them."

"Thank you, Collin. I know this might happen, but thank you for trying to help me." Axel smiled bitterly. The fact that he hadn't found a job for almost half a year showed how bad his situation was. From a business standpoint, Henry's refusal made sense.

"No, listen to me first. It's hard to convince them, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. As long as you impress them, you can get the role. That means you have to give your best in the audition." Collin tapped his shoulder firmly.

"You've got this. I trust you. You're a great actor with strong potential. This isn't your downfall, it's your comeback. I'll be there to watch you rise again."

Axel didn't know where Collin's confidence came from, but he didn't want to disappoint his agent. Collin had been helping him for four years, and this was the moment to prove himself to his friend, to the industry, and to himself.

"I will do my best. That's a promise."

Collin believed in him, so he had to believe in himself.

An hour later, Axel's name was called. He entered the audition room. The people inside glanced at him, most wearing cold expressions, as if already expecting to be unimpressed.

"Mr. Gunner, your scene is on page 4, the one where the killer calls your phone while you're watching TV."

Axel sat on the couch, staring at the static on the TV, acting as though he was watching a show with feigned boredom.

The phone rang beside him. He picked it up.

"I'm going to kill you—"

"Wazzup!"

Axel replied, shaking his tongue and crossing his eyes in an exaggerated, comical way.

The people in the room burst out laughing, caught off guard by the unexpected delivery. Even those ready to dismiss him were surprised.

Behind The Spotlight Chapter 114

Axel's talent was adapting to his role and making sure he blended naturally with whatever character he was supposed to portray, no matter how absurd or strange that character might be. The role he was striving to get cast in was a tall cracker guy. Yes, the guy was tall but also a cocaine addict whose whole existence in the script was meant to be both ridiculous and comedic. Frightening Movie was a parody of countless horror movies, from slashers to ghost stories, and was obviously a comedy film.

The role was called Tall Cracker Guy... Don't expect anything deep.

In the scene where Axel was performing, the killer phone called the Tall Cracker Guy and tried to scare him, but Tall Cracker Guy thought it was his drug dealer instead, setting up the comedic misunderstanding the director wanted the audience to laugh at.

So when the killer said, "I'm going to kill you," Tall Cracker Guy was supposed to reply, "Are you my dealer? Man, we already talked about this a week ago, I'm not going to try weed. So don't push that lame ass grass at me! Don't threaten me!"

This was the exact line in the script, carefully written for comedic timing.

That was the line Axel was supposed to deliver. However, he improvised and did something different, taking the risk of injecting his own interpretation.

Based on how he understood the role, Tall Cracker Guy was probably under the influence while watching television, reacting to the world around him with exaggerated silliness. So when he answered the call, he was supposed to act like a crackhead whose mind wasn't entirely grounded in reality.

The best decision Axel could think of was to answer the call with an excited wazzup, believing the caller was his drug dealer. This small twist, in his mind, would immediately add a fresh comedic layer to the role.

So he answered with "Wazzup!" while shaking his head, sticking out his tongue, and crossing his eyes, exaggerating his movements as if mocking the stereotype. That was how he adapted to the role.

He performed the scene, and the audience burst out laughing so loudly that it filled the entire room. Even Wyatt laughed out loud while Henry choked on his own saliva from the sudden burst of comedy he wasn't prepared for.

Their reactions didn't affect Axel's performance. He kept going with the same confidence, showing he wasn't thrown off by the crowd.

"What?" Even the person reading the killer's lines couldn't respond correctly because Axel's improv had thrown off the expected flow of the dialogue.

"Ayo, what's happening bro? Got any coke? Although I have to remind you, I don't like the weak grass shit that you offered me last time." Axel altered the lines slightly to match his rhythm. He twirled the cable of the phone while vibing with an imaginary song in his head, looking fully lost in his high.

"What? No, no, I'm not your drug dealer. I'm a killer!"

"Then stop calling me, you dumb motherfucker. You're killing my vibe!"

"Listen to me! I'm inside your house. Hehe, I'm gonna kill you!"

Axel, playing Tall Cracker Guy, suddenly pulled out a machine gun and sprayed bullets all over the house until the killer, wearing a ghost mask, dropped dead in a way that looked like something straight out of a cartoon. Not even done, Tall Cracker Guy shoved a grenade into the killer's mouth and blew him up, overkill serving as the punchline of the entire act.

Boom!

With that, his performance ended, leaving the room in stunned silence as everyone tried to process the absurdity. Axel looked around and saw the production crew staring at him with surprise and disbelief at what they had just witnessed.

There was silence until Henry nudged Wyatt, snapping the director out of his daze.

"Axel, what you did earlier in the performance was obviously improvised. Tell me, why did you make that funny face?" Wyatt questioned curiously while scribbling in his script.

"Because I believe that's what Tall Cracker Guy would do. He does unexpected things because he's always high."

"I see..." Wyatt glanced at his script and nodded faintly before writing something down.

As for Henry, he didn't have any questions. He just sighed and massaged his forehead, not sure if he should laugh or cry.

Axel didn't know whether he had passed the audition or not. He simply left the room without a clear answer.

When he stepped outside, he saw Collin grinning at him as if he had already seen the future.

"Why are you grinning?" Axel asked, confused by Collin's reaction.

"Because you passed." Collin laughed.

"Huh?" Axel was even more confused.

"I heard people laughing inside, which means you passed. In a comedy film, an actor who can make people laugh immediately passes."

"Collin, that's just being arrogant and optimistic."

The other actors waiting for their turn nodded as they listened to the conversation. They knew laughter didn't always equal success in auditions. A laugh didn't necessarily mean they had landed the role.

"Anyway, don't leave right away. I'll settle the contract today." Collin and Axel walked quickly down the hallway.

"Collin, I don't understand. Why are you so confident that I'll pass?"

"You've improved as an actor and you made the production team laugh. That's enough justification to cast you, and in comedy, that reaction is priceless."

"Just like that? What about my issues then?"

"I already talked to Henry and Wyatt. They promised they'd let go of those issues as long as you impressed them, and you clearly just did."

"..."

Axel didn't know what to say. So he got a role simply by making the production team laugh? Just like that? It sounded too simple and too good to be true.

Actually, Collin didn't explain everything. He couldn't tell Axel that the words above his head were glowing brightly like a halo only he could see. His talent might be colored yellow, but it was shining like a light bulb radiating energy. Collin could clearly see that Axel's talent was improving, fast and obvious.

As they talked, the words above Axel's head slowly vanished as his talent faded after being used.

"Axel Gunner pass."

Wyatt declared firmly and without hesitation. The people in the room agreed, except for two who exchanged doubtful glances.

Henry, the producer, and Andy, the representative of Uni-versus Pictures, were against casting Axel Gunner.

The two kept silent as Wyatt continued explaining Axel's performance and why it stood out among the others. The director seized this moment to convince everyone to cast Axel. He was genuinely happy that Axel had proven himself instead of relying on connections, which made his case stronger. This time, Wyatt was proud to cast him because Axel excelled in his performance and exceeded expectations.

"We worked with Axel two years ago, and everyone can see that he's improved. His progress is so great that it would be a waste not to cast him. Besides, out of all the actors who auditioned for the role of Tall Cracker Guy, Axel delivered the best performance," Wyatt said with conviction.

He wanted to give Axel a chance to prove himself. It would be a shame for an actor showing such obvious talent to be forgotten by Hollywood simply because of past mistakes.

"But we can't just forget the fact that he broke his contract for his last movie. How can we be sure he won't do it again with us?" Andy from Uni-versus Pictures voiced his concern in a stern tone.

"He worked with Week on a Cruise Ship and he didn't cause any scandal."

"And that's a different story. I know you're friends with Axel, but that shouldn't affect your judgment."

"It didn't affect my judgment. Axel is the perfect actor for the role of Tall Cracker Guy. Andy, I'm going to ask you, is Axel's performance good or bad?"

"... It's good." Andy gritted his teeth, his jaw tightening as though he hated admitting it aloud.

"Then we don't have anything to fight about. Axel will get the role." Wyatt was adamant this time, his voice carrying weight.

"Henry, are you in or not?" The director turned to the producer, who had been keeping his mouth shut for a long while, his silence creating a tense atmosphere.

Henry sighed deeply, rubbing the bridge of his nose before speaking as though he carried a burden.

"Let's cast Axel. As much as I hate to admit it, his performance impressed me. We are supposed to cast the best actor for each role. If the CEO and Chairman ask questions, I will answer them. I'll take responsibility."

When Henry said that, Andy sighed in relief. At least he wouldn't be the one to face the wrath of the boss if things went downhill, and that alone was enough to loosen the knot in his chest.

'Collin, I helped you this time. We are friends and I can't abandon that. Just don't ask for an expensive salary.'

Henry thought to himself, silently hoping Collin would be reasonable enough not to push things too far.

What Axel needed was exposure. He needed a chance to prove himself, a stage where he could claw his way back into the spotlight.

"Collin, I'm going to give you one offer, nothing more, nothing less. Axel Gunner's salary will only be $250,000. I know his last salary was over $1 million, but his reputation went downhill after that. Furthermore, he can only get the full $250,000 once all of his scenes are done filming. That will force him to behave and not cause any trouble. If you're against that, then consider this negotiation null."

Henry was satisfied that he delivered that line clearly. He had thought of everything he wanted to say before negotiating with Collin, carefully weighing each word so there was no loophole or opening to argue against him.

Collin listened seriously and remained silent for a few seconds. Then he smiled and extended his hand for a handshake, his expression showing both relief and quiet pride.

"It's a deal for me. Axel will work on your project, but he can't get his salary if he doesn't finish filming or if he starts a scandal."

Collin and Axel had already talked about it earlier. He explained to Axel the possibilities if he were cast in the movie, painting both the best-case and worst-case scenarios with brutal honesty. After thinking about it seriously, Axel agreed that he was fine with receiving his complete salary only once his job was done.

What he needed was to prove himself again. In fact, it didn't matter to him if he didn't get a salary at all. As long as he got the role, Axel would use that as his stepping stone to reach his goal.

Even Collin was surprised that Henry offered $250,000. He thought Henry would only offer a couple of thousand at best, which showed that Henry, for all his sharpness, still had some faith in Axel's potential.

Since Henry's offer was not that bad, Collin agreed. The two shook hands firmly, the gesture sealing not just a contract but also a bond of trust.

When Collin was done negotiating the contract, he saw a man in his 40s waiting for him.

"Anthony, how's your job?"

"Haha, it's alright. Better than what I expected when I first came on board."

Anthony was the person Collin had hired to become Wyatt's assistant director about three years ago. Anthony had been expelled from his last project because he offended the producer, a mistake that nearly ended his career until Collin took a chance on him.

"Looks like you're happy. That's great."

"I owe it to you."

"Me?"

"Yeah. Maybe you didn't know, but Producer Perberto was the one who fired me from my last job. I'm happy now that the bastard is rotting in jail together with his son who can't act." Anthony hugged Collin, and the talent agent felt awkward, not used to sudden affection from another man.

"I heard that you kicked their asses. Thank you. I got my revenge at last."

"I only beat Perberto's son. You should probably thank Arnold, he's the one who beat Producer Perberto."

"I will do that. Collin, thank you for doing God's work."

"Now that's a stretch, but I'll take the compliment if it makes you feel better."

"You don't have to worry. I'll take care of Wyatt. He is still young and he needs guidance from a veteran like me."

"That's great to hear."

Anthony said his thanks one last time before bidding farewell. He was happy that father and son were now in jail. Producer Perberto had tried to help his son become famous by starring him in a film, but the film failed at the box office. After that, his son didn't get into any more movies because he couldn't act, proving that connections alone couldn't sustain someone with no talent.

Collin exited Uni-Versus Pictures and found Axel waiting in the parking lot.

It was obvious from Axel's sweaty face that he was nervous, his palms clenching and unclenching as though preparing for the worst possible news.

"How's the negotiation?"

"You got the role. Your salary is $250,000, but you can only get that amount once you're done filming all of your scenes."

"..."

Axel was speechless as Collin tapped him on the shoulder, the reassuring touch grounding him in reality.

"Collin, you're probably the best talent agent in Hollywood."

"Today I've been receiving praises, this is not that bad." Collin grinned.

"I can't say that I'm the best talent agent in Hollywood, but I can assure you that I will always fight for your benefits. That's my job as a talent agent." Collin turned to Axel and was stunned to see the actor crying openly.

"Huh? Hey, why are you crying?"

"You saved my life twice. Thank you, Collin. I'll never forget everything you did for me." Axel wiped his tears with the back of his hand, trying to regain his composure.

"Twice? I don't remember doing that."

Collin opened his car, choosing not to press further. He found it awkward...

"Let's meet tomorrow. The lawyer will have to check the contract before you can sign it."

Axel nodded and waved as Collin's car left.

Collin didn't know that when they first met in the bar four years ago, Axel had been thinking of ending it all. Their meeting that night prevented him from going through with it, though Collin never realized how pivotal that small encounter had been.

Today, Collin saved him again from absolute destruction. He knew that his career as an actor was in peril and he felt like he could never make a comeback. However, Collin didn't give up and helped him get a role, pulling him back.

He saved his life twice, and Axel felt blessed that he had a friend like Collin, a friend he never thought he deserved but was grateful to have.

Just like that, March arrived.

Within the past few months, Collin's clients had been busy with their respective projects, each of them diving deeper into their careers.

Lawrence was working on Bride Runaway. So far, the project was already three-fourths done with its filming, and the production team was pushing hard to meet deadlines, juggling multiple sets, costumes, and late-night shoots. Being the lead actor of this romance movie, Lawrence had at least 80% of the total screentime. It was both a blessing and a curse since every expression, every misstep, would be scrutinized more than anyone else's. It also meant that he had to attend every single filming session, just like Jolyne Robs who, like him, barely had time to sleep and lived off endless cups of coffee just to keep her energy steady.

By the way, Collin still had no idea what was going on between Jolyne Robs and Arnold Johnson, though he occasionally caught subtle glances and unspoken tension between the two. Arnold kept quiet about it and never spoke of his clients, maintaining the professional conduct the industry demanded. An agent should never discuss the personal lives of clients with strangers, because one careless slip could ruin reputations and careers overnight.

Aside from Lawrence, Axel was also doing well. Even though his salary had dropped to $250,000 after the scandal, he was satisfied that he had landed another movie. In his heart, he knew that simply staying relevant after such a scandal was already a victory. You carried yourself with confidence, and even the sponsors have been showering us with praise." Collin smiled. He had no reason to lie.

The two were speaking in Collin's office.

Jennifer had worked hard hosting the competition and deserved the recognition. She carried herself with grace on stage, even when she was crumbling off-camera.

The Singing Voice was one of the most successful talent shows on television in recent years, so much so that rival networks were scrambling to copy its formula. Many networks were already considering launching their own singing competitions, hoping to grab a slice of the market. Maybe they'd title it something like American Singing Idol or X-Factory... definitely not a cheap knock-off.

"That's right, I worked hard, and damn, it feels good to finally be recognized." Jennifer grinned, happy to be acknowledged.

"Since I did great, how about giving me a cigarette? I forgot mine, and I'm dying for just one puff." She wiggled her fingers, itching for a smoke, her body restless at the very thought.

"You know I don't smoke. Besides, I already told you, you should stop. It's not good for your health."

"Shut your bitch ass up. You're not my mom, so stop nagging me like one." Jennifer clicked her tongue in irritation, though her faint smirk betrayed she was teasing.

She knew smoking was bad, but she couldn't help it. She wasn't a heavy smoker, but when she started hosting The Singing Voice, the hectic schedule wore her down. Anxiety often followed her after the cameras stopped rolling, and cigarettes became her quick escape. After a month of smoking, it became hard to stop. Every attempt to quit ended in cravings and irritability.

Out of all of Collin's clients, only Axel wasn't smoking, which was ironic, considering his life had been the most stressful lately. Collin shook his head.

"Why are you so concerned about my smoking habits when I never asked you to play doctor?"

"I'm your agent. That means I get to nag if it keeps you alive long enough to keep making money."

"And? Fuck off."

"It's really a miracle how you never swear while hosting the show. You didn't even grow up in the ghetto; you're from a gated neighborhood. Where did you even learn to curse like that?" Collin asked, still impressed by Jennifer's sailor mouth.

"Of course I didn't swear. That would cost me my job. Especially the last five episodes, they were broadcast live. I had to be mindful of every word. Every second felt like walking on eggshells." She scoffed.

"You didn't answer my question, though. Where did you learn to speak like that?"

"It's none of your business, so drop it before I really start swearing."

Jennifer didn't want to admit that she had been depressed in middle school after her older brother died. The pain of losing him had twisted her, pushing her toward the wrong crowd. She learned to swear and curse as if every ugly word was armor against the world.

Her parents had been heartbroken, but Jennifer ignored them and continued down a reckless path, skipping school, sneaking out late, disregarding every warning sign. Thankfully, she eventually realized her mistakes and chose to follow her dreams instead of self-destruction. Still, she had a hard time letting go of her foul mouth, just as she couldn't shake her new addiction to cigarettes.

"Collin, you really don't have any cigarettes? Please, I just need one. I swear."

"I have chewing gum, if that counts as comfort."

"You're useless. I'd suck a cock for a cigarette, and I'm not even kidding right now."

"Thank God we're talking in my office. If you said that in public, I don't know what would happen. Jennifer, you need to tone down your foul words. That can affect your career. If the cameras ever catch the real you, people won't forget it. Especially now that you're hosting a singing competition."

"So, when's season 2 going to start?"

Since The Singing Voice was a hit, the TV network had no problem renewing the contract, this time with even bigger sponsors lining up. The profits were huge, securing its spot as the flagship program for next year. They also made a fortune from advertisements, merchandise, and sold-out live audience tickets.

As for Jennifer, she earned $264,000 from hosting the show's 22 episodes. Her salary per episode was $12,000, a life-changing sum for most.

"Ahem, anyway, you don't have to work hard. You should be happy instead. You have a constant job now. You don't need to audition for movies and waste time. Being the host of a singing competition guarantees you income every year."

She earned $12,000 per episode. With 22 episodes per season, it was an amount that anyone would be happy to work with.

"I agree with you, but hosting is also tiring compared to acting in a movie for just a few months. Collin, I've been busy for half a year hosting the show without a proper break."

"You want to resign then?"

"Of course not. Resigning would be foolish now that I finally have something steady to hold onto."

Collin and Jennifer's meeting ended. Jennifer only visited his office to find out if he had another job for her or perhaps a new role.

However, she also admitted that her situation was better now. At least she didn't have to search for projects every other month. Now she had a steady one. The best she could do was maintain her role as the host of The Singing Voice. She also admitted she needed to tone down her potty mouth since one careless remark could spread quickly in the industry.

Unfortunately, it was hard to change a habit ingrained for more than a decade. Even her parents couldn't fix that problem despite the countless times they scolded her.

During that month, Collin successfully sealed a deal with the producer of The Singing Voice.

Touchpebbles Pictures had received positive results when they screened the film to test audiences, so they invested in a full red carpet event complete with flashing cameras and reporters shouting for attention.

Axel had already experienced a premiere with a red carpet during Week On A Cruise Ship. Even so, he was surprised when some people showed real support as he waved, the cheers ringing louder than he expected. He realized he actually had fans.

Well, Axel Gunner had starred in three movies, so it wasn't surprising he had gained some. Especially since The Accidental Wedding Crashers and Week On A Cruise Ship were both box office hits.

Axel was approached by a reporter.

"Axel, we know you suffered such a tragedy when your son was abused by your ex-wife. What can you say about that?"

The male reporter didn't hold back, stabbing him in the painful spot like a predator circling its prey, waiting to feast on Axel's discomfort.

Fortunately, Collin and the PR agent had already prepared him for this kind of situation. Axel forced a bitter smile and laughed softly, his tone carrying both strength and weariness, a father trying to maintain dignity despite his wound being reopened in public.

"It was a terrible time. As a father, I couldn't sleep or eat. But I'm happy now that justice prevailed and I'm the one taking care of my son."

"That's wonderful to hear. So, about your son, he was treated poorly..."

Reporters kept pressing questions about his son, but Axel controlled his expression with discipline. He knew the reporter was waiting for a moment when he would break and lash out.

However, Axel understood the importance of this premiere. He couldn't afford to make a scene. His career was fragile, so he held back... He actually wanted to punch the reporter but clenched his fists in his pockets, forcing himself to be patient.

After a few minutes of keeping calm with a smile on his face, Axel excused himself as the premiere was about to begin.

He realized how heartless reporters could be. They didn't care if they offended people; they only wanted headlines, and the crueler the story, the better it sold.

Face: Swap was about an FBI agent who underwent an experimental surgery to switch faces with a terrorist in order to stop a bomb threat.

But when the FBI agent woke up and took the terrorist's face and identity, the two men were trapped in each other's lives in the cruelest twist. The FBI agent was sent to the prison meant for the terrorist, while the terrorist lived a life filled with pleasures and freedom. The terrorist even slept with the FBI agent's wife, savoring the deception. He became a hero after stopping the very bomb he had created.

After a death-defying stunt, the FBI agent successfully escaped the prison to face his enemy and take back what was stolen.

A deadly cat-and-mouse chase ensued as they fought through brutal gunfights and tense pursuits, each determined to reclaim their identity and destroy the other.

In the end, the FBI agent killed the terrorist in a dramatic showdown, but his face was damaged during the battle. Fortunately, with the help of the doctors, he reclaimed both his life and his face.

The audience clapped with excitement and appreciation when the credits rolled. They were satisfied and entertained by the movie. The two actors' performances were convincing; one was already a famous star, while the other was a rising name.

"So you're telling me that Axel can get a bonus?"

"I read his contract carefully, so I know. Axel did break the contract, which makes him ineligible for the rest of his salary. However, since he still appeared in the movie, the contract states he can earn a 0.2% bonus from the 30-day box office, provided Face: Swap recouped its investment within 7 days, which is no easy feat." Quincy explained.

"Face: Swap had a budget of $50 million," Quincy added.

"And today is the seventh day of its screening!"

Collin immediately grabbed the day's newspaper and scanned for the box-office report.

"As of May 13, 1998, Face: Swap grossed over $55 million. The movie performed strongly, and audiences loved the chemistry between the two lead actors…"

Collin stopped reading and grinned at Quincy, feeling a wave of relief.

"I only told you today because I wasn't sure the movie would be a hit. I didn't want to get your hopes up if it failed to recoup its cost within a week," Quincy admitted.

It was an impressive feat, considering that the summer was crowded with competing blockbuster films that had larger budgets and more popular stars. Yet, despite the odds, Face: Swap managed to carve out its own audience. By now, however, the movie had already lost its momentum in North America.

Its international performance, on the other hand, was only just beginning.

Because of its strong showing in North America, Touchpebbles Pictures decided to release the movie overseas. The executives held long boardroom discussions, weighing the numbers and potential risks, before unanimously agreeing that the film had enough power to succeed internationally. This was the standard practice in the 90s, movies were first tested in the domestic market before being released abroad.

After all, shipping thousands of film reels cost millions of dollars. Each reel was heavy, expensive to transport, and required delicate handling. If a film flopped, the losses could cripple a studio. Only those movies that performed exceptionally well domestically were given the privilege of an international release. Face: Swap was one of them.

Now, Axel was in Europe. His role in Frightening Movie had already been filmed, and he wasn't particularly busy anymore since he didn't have many scenes. Still, he would need to return once post-production began to dub his lines. That was usually the process.

At the station, he bought a ticket and waited for the train. The place bustled with activity, travelers dragging suitcases, businessmen clutching newspapers and constantly checking their watches.

While waiting, he heard a voice. He turned and noticed a street performance. A woman was singing, surrounded by a small crowd. Her voice was enchanting, soothing yet powerful, and Collin found himself unexpectedly drawn in. The melody carried an emotion that loosened his chest, and he rose slightly on his toes to catch a better glimpse.

Near a pillar stood a young black woman, singing with her eyes closed. She strummed her guitar, her natural curly hair brushing her shoulders. Her voice soared through the station, and the people around her were utterly captivated.

She wore a simple coat, nothing flashy, yet she commanded attention with nothing but her music. The audience clapped, and many tossed money into the open guitar case at her feet.

The woman smiled warmly, bowing her head in gratitude. There was no arrogance in her expression, only the humble joy of being appreciated.

She strummed again, humming softly.

Then, suddenly, a tall man stood before her. She blinked in surprise and looked up, meeting the eyes of a handsome stranger. No, he wasn't staring at her exactly, but rather above her head. His gaze was so intense that it unsettled her.

'God... He's handsome,' she thought, her heartbeat quickening. Still, she remained cautious.

The man pulled out a 500-franc note and placed it in her guitar case. Relieved, she assumed he would leave after that.

Instead, he reached into his tuxedo and pulled out a card.

"Hello, I'm Collin East. I'm a talent agent from ANT. Do you mind if I talk to you for a minute?"

He handed her his business card. The woman looked at it but didn't take it. Strangers could be dangerous.

"Foreigner?" she asked in a heavy accent.

"Ah? Yes, I'm sorry about that. Let me introduce myself again."

Realizing she was French, Collin tried to reintroduce himself in her language. His French was clumsy and accented, but he managed to piece together a passable introduction. His effort drew a few curious glances from nearby passersby.

"Hm."

The woman nodded but chose to end her performance. She packed her guitar and the money into her case and began walking away.

"Huh?"

Collin blinked, confused. She hadn't even taken his card.

"H-Hey."

Instinctively, he followed her as she walked out of the station. His instincts as an agent screamed not to let her go.

'Does she want me to follow her?' Collin wondered.

He failed to realize how much he resembled a creep at that moment.

It didn't take long for him to catch up to the woman. His heart raced slightly, not from exertion, but from the tension of the situation.

"Please, just listen to me."

"Ahhh—!!"

The woman screamed as Collin touched her shoulder. Her sudden reaction drew the attention of passersby, who stared at the scene with suspicion and curiosity. To them, Collin appeared like a potential stalker.

"Wait, wait—! I'm not a bad person. I'm just a talent agent." He raised his hands in a calming gesture, hoping to convey that he meant no harm. As the crowd slowly gathered, Collin quickly explained himself and handed his business card to the woman.

The dark-skinned woman glanced at the card before looking back at Collin. She remained cautious, assessing whether he could be trusted.

"I'm a talent agent at Apex Network Talent. Just give me a few minutes to explain."

"Hey miss, is this guy bothering you?" one passerby asked Chantal Beaumont, coldly staring at Collin. The conversation was in French, and Collin caught a few words, realizing they likely misunderstood the situation.

"I'm not a bad person. I'm a talent agent," he said in French, doing his best to explain. Though his grammar was slightly off, she could at least understand the essence of his words, and it seemed to calm her slightly.

Chantal studied the business card. It looked expensive and professional, with thick paper, a refined logo, and golden lettering. She still had no idea what Apex Network Talent was, but the card gave the impression of legitimacy.

"Is he bothering you?" the concerned citizen asked again.

Chantal stared at Collin for a few seconds, then shook her head. Her eyes flickered between curiosity and wariness as she evaluated whether he was genuine.

"No, he's not bothering me. Thank you for your help," she replied in French.
