People are using AI but not disclosing it. How do you detect it ?

And everyone is gonna lie about it.

In some games the only winning move is not to play at all.

True, but less people than you might think.

Saying that you're AI free when you're not is an active lie. It requires you to intentionally take action so as to decieve.

Simply not declaring yourself Ai is a passive lie. You don't actually have to do anything - it's much easier to justify to yourself than going out and intentionally misleading people. Of course, there are people who still would, quite a lot of them, but don't underestimate it as a filter. Plus, if someone actively advertises themselves as AI free and later its found out they're not? The backlash can be a lot greater because again, they actively choose to lie. People don't like that, especially readers.

I don't care if they are ridiculed or that their reputation is at rock bottom, I won't go out to defend them or attack them personally or support witch hunts or do anything that may affect anyone directly.

But of course I have opinions on the people using AI and the state of AI generated work.
Okay.

It's just that from the general tone it sounded more like "I don't care because I agree they deserve it" than simple "I don't care".

Just explaining my take. No smoke.

You want some grass fed fanfic? Just $49.99 for 1000 words. Certified Humane!
And everyone is gonna lie about it.
Honestly, might get to the point where we're paying people to live-stream writing Asuka X Hikari fics on a Selectric, or the insane net-filters out of Stephenson's Anathem.
At the start of ChatGPT craze I've read a short story "Writer looks for readers" or similar title.

The premise was that with advent of AI written fiction at quality of high-level writers, accessible immediately, about anything a reader wants, demand for human-written stories plummeted.

And so, the job of reader for hire was created, but even this some people faked with AI, and in the end we have scene face to face between hired reader and amateurish writer who wants someone read they work - and only face to face she can be certain.

So, the story missed the mark, but maybe not completely. By hiring an author to write a story face to face you can be sure that it is "Certified Humane".

The poor plebs will be having AI-generated slop, and rich snobs will have personal writers.

Okay.

It's just that from the general tone it sounded more like "I don't care because I agree they deserve it" than simple "I don't care".

Nah, it's fair. I thought about it for a few minutes. You are right. I don't care about them because I think any ridicule they get from videos on Youtube or articles written about them is deserved. I don't waste my time thinking or interacting with them. I want to have close to no interaction with any 'art' they make.

It is the reason why I started the thread in the first place. I want to find the most expeditious way to recognize if a story is AI and drop it and move on with my life. There are thousands of stories made each and every day to read from that are not AI. And even more stories made even before AI.

I'm not involved in many large communities, but what I've seen from smaller ones is that uh, generally the people posting AI content are just people who like AI. Not a cabal of sinister hooded figures trying to get one over on the poor innocent general public.

And like most people who are people, they tend to try to avoid getting harassed about, let's say, literally anything. Which generally means not sticking out from whatever "normal" is. I'd bet that if we had a dedicated subforum for AI generated content, even if it wasn't the exclusive, enforced place for AI content, most people would post their AI generated content there, because it's just a nice cozy treefort for people with a shared interest, rather than, like, "Hey, hang out with everyone else, but wear this big neon sign that X% of people here vocally hate!"

Even if rule 1 is enforced just as hard against people being dicks about AI in general CW as it would be in this hypothetical AI CW, the vibe's different. "My feelings don't care about your facts" deal. Plus, similar to what BronzePlaceWriter said, anyone being a dick in AI CW would be actively going out of their way to be a dick, making it easier to dismiss them as some sad pathetic loser with nothing better to do than go into the AI section and bitch that they found AI. Again, even though that's just as true about a story in general CW tagged as AI... my feelings don't care about your facts.

Then again, if we look at the number of SFW stories in NSFW (take a shot) and the reason for, we might just end up with that situation again, idunno, I think the mods already said they wouldn't make another subforum, but I might be hallucinating, on account of how I'm actually— uh, ignore that last part.

Sidenote: it's irritating how many threads about AI there's already, and that they all converge. It looks like the same conversation is in multiple places and it gets disjointed.

I have pretty important question: how many people care about AI in writing? Do we have some inkling?

The labeled AI-writings get decent number of likes, despite having all hellmarks of AI, and there's an author that disclosed use of AI (going by the story I've read he clearly put more effort into that, I would say 70/30 at least) that gets >1k.

Anyway.

I don't care about AI for a reason. I have readed a fic, it was a Worm/Dune crossover, and up to a point I suspected it was AI generated.

Problem? I can't tell if it is truly AI generated since nobody seems to think that and so on. So I had two avenues of inquiry.
  1. Assume the guy's actual writing is not that high.
  2. Assume he is lazy.
  3. Assume he is a good writer.
The issue with the second? It still requires effort so lazy is out of the window.

We go back to the first option, but that comes on another issue for me.
Assuming that his writing is in truth not as good as we see, then I would not read it. Which gives the reason why he used AI in first place. Which is irrelevant because then I would have not readed it because it is AI.

But if he didn't use AI, then his writing is good, which would mean I would read it.

Then I noticed I cared too much if the writing is good to ponder if a human did it or not. Who cares? Most humans write awful badly written stories, if that means less awful writing forms and spelling, oh well, I will not complain about it.

Nonetheless said fic I abandoned it because Paul is not like that.

For someone who keeps spouting 'ah buh this is different' merely to support a illogical position?
Sure, call it 'false equivalence'.
They did argue in the past that photography would kill painters, might as well see that they had a point, sure?
I suppose you extend that to false advertising in general, then? Or claiming that a food product does not contain nuts when it does, in fact, contain nuts?

Or is AI just a special case because... reasons?

No? If anything I wanna see if they would extend to those as well.
It is the logical end of that inquiry.
But we know the crowd will just make some excuse for it and AI is the 'special case' where that inquiry fits...for some reason.

The final product doesn't contain AI, AI is just used in the manufacturing.
A more accurate analogy would be freerange vs. cage eggs, but even that's wrong because the actual product does differ depending on how you keep livestock.
Closer I think would be when clothing products put the country of origin on the tag. If you care about that sort of thing (e.g. you buy local products preferentially) maybe the actual product isn't the question but rather who gets paid for what in the process of buying it. Of course this is a flawed analogy at a more basic level because commercial fanwork is itself not the norm in the first place, but it's not too far off spiritually - it's a question of who made it and how rather than what it is.

As the saying goes, perfect is the enemy of good. We're not talking about changing laws, we're talking about setting the policy of this forum.

it's due to the engagement that sites like these benefit from having AI software crank out chapters on the daily.
We aren't really putting any effort towards growth, and we don't have advertising, so we aren't giving AI use free rein to increase engagement.

I don't like AI written stories either, so I'd also like it if I could filter them all out. It's just not possible to implement that, and any attempt would likely be a poison worse than the disease.
I have. My solution is taking a clear moderation stance against undisclosed AI usage. Doing so would lower unlabeled AI usage overnight.

To expand on that, I would introduce a checkbox when posting new stories similar to the checkbox for the necroposting warning. Explaining that undisclosed AI usage is against the rules.

I want to emphasize that I understand your gripes with this solution, but even if it's just this and the moderators take no proactive enforcement (unless presented with undeniable evidence) undisclosed AI usage would lower by a huge margin. You only need to see the effect of the necroposting warning has on you to see the correlation.
'Don't make rules you can't enforce', as the saying goes. But say we did display that policy in various places, I agree it likely would reduce the amount of untagged AI use, toothless as it would be.

It would also give license to people who think they've discovered untagged AI use to flood the report system (which, fine, we can just auto-reject them), or try to 'righteously' argue with an author/other readers that the work is definitely AI because of X/Y/Z, and should be tagged as such. Making it official policy (even if unenforced) would just encourage the witch hunts we don't want even more, and that's not a small problem as is, when the official policy is solely 'we don't care, stop harassing the author'.

I'm glad you can see the value in the suggestion, though sadden we keep circling back towards "witch hunts". I understand that it's the mentality captured by the staff at the moment, however this fearmongering over the reaction towards this unethical behavior is overblown in my opinion. Do people hold negative sentiments towards AI? Absolutely, but like I and others in this thread, we would rather not deal with it than engage with it. Ignore thread, move on.

That being said, I want to emphasize something, putting aside the reactions towards this behavior, undisclosed AI usage is unethical and it is wrong. Treating it as not a big deal, will just let the problem fester, and let people do it guilt free. Is it as bad as plagiarism? I don't know, but speaking for myself, it has completely ruined my desire to read any low view count story. Not because I'm expecting AI in every one of them, but because I do not want to go through the hassle of investigating whether what I'm reading is AI or not.

It is also a failure in the trust that the QQ filter system builds within the reader. In this forum you used to find your ideal stories just by using the filter. Yet, this unethical use of AI is such a malicious circumvention of this system that anyone who does not want to deal with AI writing completely lose any and all trust in its ability to work as intended.
I am tired of investing myself in a story and then start suspecting it's AI. Will there ever be a solution ?
People like you and I only have one real solution. And that's trusting reader's ability to appreciate an authentically written story more than a machine written one. Thus, the more popular a story is, the less likely it's a LLM ghostwriter.

At least until (if ever), this issue is taken seriously by the staff.

Does most people think that undisclosed AI use is unethical? I doubt, honestly.

I wonder what examples of witch hunts over AI are there.

Another idea: "repository of human-made fiction", it can be off-site, likely with voting how much people think a fic is pure.

It wouldn't allow for simple search by tags on QQ, though. The tags could be copied, though.

Hello xihute, Hope you had a good weekend.
Does most people think that undisclosed AI use is unethical? I doubt, honestly.
It may be arrogant of me to speak for others, but I do believe they do, you only need to see outside this forum to see how undisclosed AI usage is regarded in other media. Deepfakes, for example, are widely regarded as notorious by the public at large for a variety of reasons, though chief amongst them is its ability to pass off as authentic.

If you feel differently, this may be why we differ so much in perspective with regard to this.

I do feel that deepfakes are different matter.

Honestly, I don't know. The unethical sounds like a strong word, especially in the context free-of-charge fanfiction. Maybe for authors asking for donations? It does feel more apt in such case, imo.

Plagiarism is also regarded as unethical is it not? Even if it's on here, free of charge. There are just some things that you do not do, and having an AI undisclosed as your ghostwriter is one of them, in my opinion.
I do feel that deepfakes are different matter.
Indeed, but the underlining problem with deepfakes is their ability to trick watchers into thinking the content displayed was not made by an AI.

I know I have completely beaten this into the ground at this point but --
>write fic by hand, all of it.
>explicitly and falsely tag it as completely AI Generated
>guys who make threads like these whine about it in my thread
>it gets bumped to page 1, thus attracting a steady flow of viewers
>meanwhile I get to sit on the back end and say that its not AI Generated by pointing out how my prose isn't AI-adjacent

I know I'm probably the only guy that thinks about this and (may) do this but... who's to say there aren't authors on here that declare their work is AI Generated when its not?

Does most people think that undisclosed AI use is unethical? I doubt, honestly.

Cut out the AI for a moment. Is paying some guy to write your term papers unethical? Is commissioning a painting and claiming its your own work scummy?

You must know most people think those aren't ethical.

That is the base activity we are talking about before we include any other objections.

Now punishable... inasmuch as it annoys me, the mod above is right, there probably isn't an easy mechanism and witch hunts are also bad for a community.

TFW you get AI enthusiast complaining about authentic human made work in their AI tagged stories

I don't think that would work as well as you suspect. If you pull the AI card and then go ''Wait, no, I was joking guys, this isn't AI generated I swear. For reals.'' Quite a lot of people will not, in fact, believe you even if your writing style is radically different. All you'll get by saying your prose isn't Ai adjacent is people going ''Oh, so you used a custom model then.''

You're probably also overestimating the amount of people who would show up to bitch in your thread. Frankly, I don't really think your plan is worth writing an entire story without even posting a single chapter until it's done. That's a pretty considerable commitment. Is the outcome actually really worth writing a whole story the hard way with no feedback or even knowledge of whether it will be received well until it's too late to change it?

True, but less people than you might think.

Saying that you're AI free when you're not is an active lie. It requires you to intentionally take action so as to decieve.
Or a lot of people might actively despise bring forced to disclose AI usage and just click A.I. free to stick it to the man and the haters and show how they despise the unnecessary extra steps.

And once you are lying passively already won't see it as a big problem to just lie actively or use a different platform like AO3 that does not come with it's own Spanish Inquisition.

In fact the more I participate in this discussion the more I have the urge to spin up a few agents and have them produce some content, edit it minimally and then post it around with an A.I. free tag.

And then when they get called out for it, it will be a bigger blow to their readerbase because readers who click on an explicitly AI-free story want it to be Ai-free. If the author advertises it as that and it's not, they have actively, deliberately and intentionally lied to their readers. That makes it very different from someone just not bothering to mention that their story is AI.

You are, of course, free to do that. Just as you are also free to own the shitstorm that may result if people think you're lying to them and also the reputational hit as a writer.

Though it should be mentioned, it is kind of a dick move to go to a tag that is specifically for people who don't want AI and then shove AI into it just out of spite. Not really a great look.

You are assuming anyone bothers calling it out.
And a huge number of readers will likely skip what they see as bad A.I. or read on because the benefit of enjoying what you read overall outweighs any fictional costs and minor inconsistencies and problems.

VPNs are a thing, so I'd disposable E-mail.
Also places like AO3 let you publish anonymously.

This is basically me wanting to give the tag a middle finger.

At least until (if ever), this issue is taken seriously by the staff.
I'm not sure whether you're taking the problems with the suggested solutions seriously.
Staff aren't conjuring up a spectre of what people might do - people derailing threads with accusations of AI use happens a lot, right now. It even happens in threads with AI tags.

You, me, and many others, indeed just want AI use tagged so we can avoid it, and have no intention of accusing others, or insulting AI users. We're not 'witch hunters', just people who want to avoid 'witches'. Unfortunately, 'witch hunters' exist, and they're ready to call it how they see it. Either expressing their frustration at being 'fooled' for however many chapters, or denigrating labelled use in their vicinity. It happens, and will happen more often if we encourage and/or condone it.

There's also the usual objections to mandated tag use, where most tags are subjective in importance and interpretation. In this case, what is 'ai assisted' to one person might be 'ai generated' to another, or maybe they don't see their level of use as any different than a spellcheck (and readers may differ).

We can't monitor people's process, we can't determine the level of use, and we can't enforce a consensus. Trying anyway has a high likelihood of just making an already bad situation much worse.

I'm currently consolidating the AI tags as part of my next batch in the 'fixing the tag system' thread, so it'll be easier to filter out whatever level of AI use you want. I'll also be putting the consolidated tags in a place of prominence in the Suggested Tags threads. But any and all tags are still voluntary, so this won't solve your problem, just help a bit.

I get where you're coming from, but the issue is, to me at least, wanting to give the tag a middle finger can read as the same as wanting to trick people into consuming something they're specifically setting out not to consume. That still pings as a dick move, you know?

You can do it. It's your right, I wouldn't stop you even if it was within my power. But at the end of the day, if you do it and if it goes perfectly and no one ever notices, what have you actually done except trick people into doing something they would find morally objectionable if they knew?

I understand your point of view, and as a moderator, I'm sure you got clearer perspective of what goes on in the forum. For "Witch Hunts" All I can say is that I can't control other people, nor can I predict their actions like we're in Minority Report, all I can do is realize it's a factor. Still, allowing this fear to paralyze the staff and in turn, letting unethical AI usage run unchallenged isn't doing anyone any favors. Specially to ethical AI authors, because all this resentment that is being created out of the unethical AI authors is being reflected into AI as a whole.

Speaking from personal experience here, as I originally had a neutral outlook on AI stories until unethical AI usage completely soured my experience of AI.
There's also the usual objections to mandated tag use, where most tags are subjective in importance and interpretation. Hmm, if there were to be a mandated tag, a simple generalized tag of "AI usage" could do. This would encompass all forms of AI usage in text, it would then be up to the author to introduce other AI tags to signify what AI usage there is if they wish to.

Like I said when I originally suggested this, the implementation isn't meant to create workload for the staff if they do not wish for it. It is to create an obstacle towards unethical AI usage.
I'm currently consolidating the AI tags as part of my next batch in the 'fixing the tag system' thread, so it'll be easier to filter out whatever level of AI use you want. I appreciate all efforts taken into making the site more usable, you have my thanks for that.
