Well shit is rolling downhill but how poetic is it to end this year with a big bang of shit. Not to say 2021 will be worse, it seems that premier nations an corporations of the world hvae re discovered the benefits of Authoritarianism. In any case I think I am going to use more and more anonymous services allround than more legal ones. It is such a shame that we are arriving to what I presume as the 'Rough Times'.

I do have to wonder if anyone has thought this through. Nuke the legitimate sites and people will go to the illegitimate ones if only because any future legitimate site could also get nuked out of nowhere.

Or in other words, the credit card companies are going to get less money from this, legitimate sites are going to get less viewers , illegal shit is going to start spreading a lot more across illegitimate paths where nothing can be done about it and the average person is going to get utterly fucked by the authoritarian behaviour and the knowledge that any site could have this happen to them.

The whole thing reads like a combination of "Something must be done!" and "Kill the competitor!" without thinking through the consequences of what they've done.

Believe me, I left out quite a bit of stuff - to the point of making my post require some pretty serious context to understand - because I didn't want to say anything politically charged.

(This is apparently more than half the other people in the thread, so I'm a little puzzled why you're saying this to me. :V)

I'm reminded of a video about Prohibition, where there was a steady push against 'indecent behavior', leading to the banning of it, but the ban proved unpopular, unenforceable, and allowed criminal gangs to build up and dig in becoming a much larger problem then they were before.

There's also the fact that a flat ban on something makes any form of regulation or controls impossible, resulting in a lot of harm and excesses that people can't really do much to counter as they're involved in what is considered to be an illegal activity and cannot get large scale support.

Slight tangent, but how comes mods seem to have different colors? Is that a personal thing or do the different mod colors of different mods mean different things?

"Think about the children" is always used when they want to placate the masses when they're going to do something authoritarian. It doesn't surprise me at all that the censors are going after pornography, So much for sexual liberation. From what I noticed on the series of events is that payment processors conspired with journalists to make a hit piece and taking advantage of that they didn't suffer much PR pushback from normies. If they just cut off service for pornhub without a plausable cause (Besides the obvious shakedown) then there would have been a rallying cry from the normies defending "sex workers" but with the image of child exploitation the normies didn't rally fast enough. The main takeaway everyone should have from this is that payment processors can just cut you off without any reason at all and there is nothing to stop them from doing so and if they could do that to pornhub they can do that to anyone. Just look at alex jones and how big tech treated him for being a 'conspiracy' nut, he's the rubicon and it's been passed a long time ago. The real cancel culture is when they go after your money.

It's just pure hypocrisy too. Cause they didn't go after every site that has to deal with those same thing, they went after the easiest source but not the largest. Hell, the dark places of fucking reddit are likely worse.

    Facebook is literally worse.

It's not moral grounds or legal grounds they did this on, or it would have been done to the worse and more blatant places first.

I don't want them to go after anybody that isn't doing anything illegal. It's just that you've got all these interests aligned so they scratch each other's back. The censors, the puritans, the journalists and the bankers. They all want the same thing and it's to crack down on pornography for their own reasons whether it be ideological, financial or social status. Frankly the only thing that could be done to prevent any future financial canceling is a bill that hopefully becomes law that prevents payment processors from removing individuals or businesses from using their service.

I don't want to see people splitting hairs on what website is worse and who the payment processors should go after, I just don't want payment processors to go after anyone at all unless it's illegal activity. Not speech illegal.

Yeah, cartels suck. It's long past time for Visa and Mastercard to be hit with antitrust.

Or for their ability to cut off people from service arbitrarily to be removed due to serving as global infrastructure.
We should've have gone all darknet/meshnet over two decades ago, but the problem is that such distributed and decentralized networking involves a few legitimately difficult computer science problems. Which is disheartening for those like me who can code, because that by itself is far from enough to be able to meaningfully contribute and speed things up, when what needs to be done is more fundamental research that got intentionally crippled by those who most benefit from centralization.

Of current popular darknets, I2P[1][2] doesn't scale indefinitely and can't cope with sudden mass adoption either. GNUnet[3][4][5] is still very slowly chugging along to maybe being production-ready some day.
Yeah, feels as if the ground just vanishes under your feet and you're looking at a chasm.

    That sort of vertigo's an unpleasantly common feeling I get when reading on censorship and looking at the progress of Free alternatives. They're not ready, and we need them a decade ago. ;_;

Part of the cryptocurrency userbase exists for this meme, unfortunately it got mostly co-opted by gambling assholes. Most alternatives I know still require some bank-like institution to start with, like Taler [6][7].

So I guess Congress sneaked in a bunch of copyright empowering bullshit into the Covid relief bill. What a fucking surprise.

Considering the Covid relief bill makes it a felony to illegally stream stuff in addition to letting copyright holders sue people without filing a federal lawsuit and the cases will be decided by copyright officers instead of thr judicial system we're getting closer and closer.

Oh, I wouldn't say it's the end of the world just yet. There's more to the world and even the West than the USA alone.

That's true, though the bad record we've got archiving things before they disappear makes one worry how much will be lost in the transition.

Here's a few articles with more context about the current ongoing damage: Corona Copyright Corruption Publication, Porn, Consenting Adults and Banking Cartels, and let's not forget US Killing Off Its Own Cryptocurrency Ecosystem.

For those Americans on this forum, support the EFF if you can, they're one of the few organizations on our side.

If you don't think that the rest of the world wants to control and censor the internet as well then you're delusional. And I'm waiting for the US to eventually build its own Great Firewall.

I could see a few countries refusing to do it out of spite/winning points over a traditional rival. None that'd not do it out of principle though.

You know, it may be unrelated, but recently got an email from Nutaku (an adult games site for those who don't know) saying they aren't accepting payments made from VISA anymore. And given that this was a week or so after the PornHub Purge? Feels like it is another attempt to censor porn. The only reason why it's a maybe (and that I didn't bring it up sooner) is that they are still accepting MasterCard for now.

For things you pay via credit card, your bank should still support some sort of wiretransfer. In some countries these have stronger data protection laws than credit cards (by far).

Most people aren't used to using these methods online though, outside of EU. Most US-based companies assume you're using credit and don't support those methods (with predictable results we're seeing now).

For things you'd rather pay for anonymously, USA seems to be trying to break that. Which I'm "sure" won't lead to significant drawbacks and cause the opposite effect as they intend.

I'd give some credence to that post if it weren't yknow, the KYM comment section. There was a doompost in one of the Election memes or something that had a bunch of upvotes that was going on about "how we're in an unprecedented time of danger" since "we'd be thrown into chaos if either of the presidents died of old age" because "who would take their place".

Cause yknow. Chain of command and presidential succession doesn't exist, no president has died during their term, and it's not as if the line of succession is such common knolwedge that ABC made a three season TV drama about it in 2016.

But for real, KYM comment section is only slightly better than any given Youtube channel's comment section.
You/the OP certain that's new? I mean even if it is it's pretty nothing burger. Almost any porn vid site I've been to has censored out those results for at least the last like eight years. It's not anything new or remarkable.

Not to mention porn vid titles give even the top Youtubers a run for their money in regards to Clickbait. Title:"(FETISH X) BLAH BLAH"
Actual content: Two and a half minute ad for their site

Presidential succession in 2016 was Pence. I will avoid Rule 8 by not commenting on that, but I think you can guess what I'd say.

On sites with ratings, those videos are probably so far in negative it'd be hard to fall for them.

    Edit: Shortened lengthy phrasing.

I feel like you just did anyway and tried to handwave it with an abbreviation tag.

Click bait, outrage vids, reality tv, so on and so forth. Not only do people fall for them but they also stupidly rate them positively.

That aside, ratings isn't my point, it's that the search engine results are a crapshoot at the best of times.

Not quite, I'd have gone much further, into details (as much as has made it to these foreigns lands I live in, at least). The abbreviation is, at best, a vague indication of what would've been problematic, but not how or why.
There goes my faith in humanity.
That is true. Most don't have a good search engine even before any censoring.

Search operators for tags and metadata are basic stuff some of them lack.

Putting information in abbreviations can still end up kinda baiting rule 8.

I ask everyone please not touch the rule 8 line regardless, and try to stay on topic, and also not play any blame games. Thank you.

The news is disheartening and I think people have made fair points throughout the thread. I am also quite worried for the future of the internet and the future of adult content on the internet.

What I am not worried about is an entire dark age for porn in America. Moral Rightists and Content Policing Leftists may throw barriers up whenever they can to earn political points in doing so, but other than the occasional legislative fuck you it doesn’t seem likely that some grand moral crusade is going to be launched over porn, the government can barely even agree to keep the lights on much less on how to prosecute such a campaign.

Corporations similarly have no other agenda than the pursuit of profit. Visa and MasterCard saw an easy way to get the moralists off there back and generate good publicity with one fell swoop. Pornhub had been warned for years by its own content creators that this was an issue and that they needed to boost moderation in order to prevent the situation there in now.

I don’t know about those other two sites but we’ve seen this happen with tumblr, patreon, and other platforms meant to support creators and there work. What is most notable for all of these sites is that they were not rewarded for their censorship. Tumblr is barely alive and the patrons that got axed found other ways of getting donations without giving a cut to the site.

There has never not been a time when porn or adult content hasn’t been either vilified or attempted to be deplatformed. For decades the adult content community has adapted and over come every obstacle. If they couldn’t stop us at the height of their power it is unlikely for us to be stopped as it wanes.

It is important to be vigilant during these trying times and it is ok to be afraid of the consequences of these actions, but never lose hope. This is just a bump in the road and as it passes we will keep making progress for a better, freer future.
