Alas, it's one of those "multiverse traveling" type stories, so MC didn't stay and develop the setting...

    This one Inuyasha (plus other youkai) story has a pretty good explanation for why despite human spiritualists being able to completely overpower youkai, they can't just become the new government. According to this worldview, when humans use their reiki on other humans, it will be tainted with the resentment of human dead, causing their power to wane. An interesting take.
