    Adrenaline, I would assume, given that there's no good reason other than a massive ongoing emergency for a firefighter to be on shift that long.

    Shifts vary from station to station, but it's usually either 12 hours a day for five/six days with the following five/six off, 24 hours on 48 off, or 48 hours on 96 off. My cousin works the last, and he seems just fine with it, but I can't imagine what that takes.

    Well, yes. They kind of have to - I'm pretty sure any firefighter shift schedule allows for time to do that, even the 12h ones.
