Apparently, he does that on purpose, according to later chapters of the manga.

He's apparently got plenty of funds to buy all the fancy magical stuff that most Adventurers use, due to a combo of 'cheap gear', 'making his own items', and 'grinding Goblin Killing Missions nonstop'. None of which pay well, but he does a LOT of them.

He's completely aware that his chosen job is going to EVENTUALLY get him killed, so he purposely makes sure that the equipment he has is completely average, so the goblins who kill him won't get anything particularly useful once they kill him and loot his corpse.

In the meanwhile, he's ALSO the one being in the setting who is completely immune to Fate.

Not because he's the Unchosen One (He is not, even if the Gods who fuck with the world for entertainment like him), but ENTIRELY because he is so goddamned crazy-prepared for Killing Goblins that he can literally tell fate to go fuck itself.

But Goblin Slayer Happened, so Fate bowed to his 'Goblins? Kill Goblins' thing.

It's why the subtitle of the series is 'He Does Not Let Anyone Roll The Dice'.
