  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Questionable Questing

... Maybe there's also room for such a thing in fantasy, or superhero setting, or something? I mean, part of the unrealized story potential of FGO is kind of this, except it wasn't executed well at all, and you get to choose your teammates and stuff. Too much control in the hands of participants.

But what if you applied it to something like, for example, Worm? Instead of getting scifi weapons upon completion, they get standardized superpowers, for example. Or a low fantasy setting like LOTR... or a mid-tier one like ASOIAF... or a high-tier one like Warcraft?

I might write a few snippets. Might use Bii as a character. Bii, okay?

I think that if they already have powers or abilities, they would have their same powerset instead of a new set altogether. Otherwise, each match becomes a race to see who can figure out their powers the quickest. Or I think that's how it would be, anyway.

I find that one of the key selling points of GANTZ and similar "death game/quest" type stories is they don't focus overly much on the unique powersets of people (they still have it, but it's one of the duller aspects of the story, though in the moment, especially in action scenes, they are great)--

--rather, one of the best parts are the personal dramas and interpersonal conflicts. Like it's less about using your ability and more about overcoming your fear of the strange and deadly and unknown to take action. More often than not, there are those who run away, or disbelieve, or profiteer.

The contrast of personalities, a type of conflict, synergizes well with the contrast of powers, this is true. I think if they already have powers or abilities, that is fine. What they get outside of these episodic deathquests are part of their "personality". How they develop them in these deathquests is up to them. However, rewards (prizes for completion) should be uniform, or the competition is uninteresting.
