Maslow's hierarchy, fitted to them: Physiological, Safety, Belonging(As Property), Companionship (from equals), Esteem (from property), Love, Self actualization

In absence of their creators, they've actually formed a functional society, based around a hierarchy of ownership ending with a primary overseer who considers themself to be the collective property of the entire society, but the ultimate owner of the individuals therein.

Funny, I had a similar comcept for a race ages ago. They would be Gazelle like creatures, in service to a race of spider-esque beings in a very Aztec society. Although due to this, the slave race was less 'slave' and more 'cattle/servant'.

i read it as 'engineer slava race' as first and thought of engineered lava slugs.

Sounds like an edgy scifi.

I'm betting that the Primary Overseer's "I am the collective property of society" trick works a lot better in theory than practice. I'm envisioning a lengthy chain of lonely individuals struggling to lead their people in the face of a deeply unfulfilling absence of Esteem and Companionship in their lives.

Some may be able to manage the psychological gymnastics of it better than others do, of course.

Maybe this all exists in the setting of my 'Silly OCP humanity fuck yeah' thing, where Humans have the psychic power to reverse entropy by being and seeing cute, thus producing a field of usable but mostly noninteractive energy which requires special instrumentation to gather.

Once, aliens tried to make us into a slave race for this...their cultivated colony of us lost the power when their inherent psychology was messed with. Then they were abandoned, because they didn't meet the slave-electrical generator role intended for them.

And yeah, in reality most primary overseers at least get involved in some kinky bedroom play to supplement their self delusion regarding being owned.

It's nothing too intriguing. You could find the larger concept further down my list of statuses, but basically just...conduits meant to draw energy out of the field generated by humans. The actual energy of any given field is far greater than it's practically recoverable energy, because the energy is very non-interactive, so the devices either needs to get bigger or the fields denser (more cute, more people, or both.
