  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.

Questionable Questing

Like for example; bad bargaining scene:

"I'll give you 5 for it."

"I want 20."

"8 is the highest I'll go."

"It's really good, you should go for 15."

"It is good, I'll give you 10."

"Deal."

A better one would be like:

"I'll give you 5 for it."

"I want 20."

"I'm the only buyer. 5."

"Look, it's really good, let's do 15. It's the lowest I'll go."

"No one else is going to buy it. 5."

"Come on, I need to make a living... how about 10?"

"If you don't sell, you won't make a living. 5."

"If I go lower than 7, then I'll make a loss..."

"Fine, let's do 7."

I feel like the reason for this is because a lot of writers live in first world nations and have these idealistic "equality" ideals ingrained in them, so they hardly ever consider power dynamics and leverage in bargaining, instead opting to just consider the thing being bargained, when it's the least important aspect of a bargain

IMO it's because having leverage and using leverage are two different things; having leverage and not using it shows how magnanimous a person is and how they're "willing to compromise" is held as a Good, while having leverage and using it is being a "greedy merchant" or something and is held as a Bad.

Fish, those ideals go back a long way before Europe was anything but a backwater. In much of Europe for much of history, your second scenario ends with the exploiter getting killed by an angry mob (jury trials are a codification of this process). It turns out that a culture of "murdering exploiters is okay" means that exploitation isn't actually a smart thing to do unless you are Superman.

If anything, this bone-deep cultural legacy has decayed in the last couple of centuries with the rise of capitalism and the expansion of the state.

The scenes may be unrealistic/boring from a modern-day perspective since we do have more innate protections for human life, and trying to make every buck matter is far more entrenched as a requirement for "doing business in the big leagues" so there's less need for a reputation about being Moral or Agreeable anymore in business dealings.
