    Defining magic

Sounds interesting and I hadn't thought of it that way ("irreducible complexity") before. On the now-rare occasion that I feel the need hammer out a useful definition, I usually go with "does the person labeling have any idea how the thing works", which seems pretty similar to what you're...

First, after much googling, I found a link to a video of what happened at the UN: http://webtv.un.org/watch/launch-of-the-broadband-working-group-on-gender-report/4506718502001 (If you want to hop to the "good part", go to about 1:20:00) I'm still watching the video. ----- ----- ----- -----...

Please provide a source with some information on what sort of legislation she is actually advocating You still have not yet established that X = Y to declare that defending Sarkeesian but not Thompson is hypocritical, even if she is trying to have something banned.

Have we argued too greedily and too deep? Are we in danger of awakening a buried god of fire and iron? :o

    Gamergate

Saying "X is bad" is the same as attempting to ban X? and attempting to ban X is the same as attempting to ban Y? If this is the level of argument that goes on in "Gamergate" threads, I can see why SV banned the whole topic.

My point is, how are they even remotely comparable, other than offending the "in-group" of the hardcore-videogame-fan tribe?

Would you say that the "disease" is "defending all members of the in-group under all circumstances no matter what"?

I'm focusing on one point at a time, and you've called this the biggest problem. What are you saying I'm wrong about? Are you saying Sarkeesian did lobby and sue for certain games to be banned? Are you saying that defending someone who did X but not someone who did Y is hypocritical? >_______ ?
  12. powerofvoid

    Gendered nouns, nonstandard and otherwise

"If they believed in that, they'd be defending Thompson as well," implies that Anita Sarkeesian and Jack Thompson did similar things, and therefore defending Sarkeesian but not Thompson is bias.

According to Anita Sarkeesian's wikipedia page, she merely talked about sexism in videogames, while Jack Thompson engaged in lawsuits and political campaigns to have videogames banned. One of these things is not like the other.

Here's the only part of this post that's maybe even slightly relevant, IMO, and only in the context of your also unsubstantiated claims that the social justice movement defends her doing this. Because we're not talking about whether Anita Sarkeesian is worth listening to, we're talking about...

You haven't answered my first question. I know Anita Sarkeesian made some youtube videos about sexism in videogames, and that there was a shitstorm about it. What makes her a loon?

If a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch, why shouldn't we decry anti-skeletons on the grounds that some of them are crazy whackos too?

I don't actually know much about Anita Sarkeesian, other than that there was a big Internet brouhaha about her approximately forever ago in Internet time. Tell me what you consider relevant and problematic about her.

There have always been crazies under any popular-but-unregulated label. I'd bet I can post examples of vegetarians being a million times worse, and that's a way more clear-cut label. Also: (bold mine)
