So recently I've re-read the manga Innocent, which basically tells the story of Charles-Henri Sanson, the inventor of the guillotine. While the whole thing has been made pretty and charming thanks to the art, the senseless tragedy of the Revolution actually made me want to make an Alt History fic, perhaps with Louis XVI having actual backbone or the Austrians moving against the Revolution so hard that it forced Robespierre to not pull the Terror out of his ass. And so on.

When I was doing the research, it suddenly hit me that, perhaps making a fic like that about an event that deeply changed the cultural identity of a people is a tad bit... off color, to put it simply. Which is why I made this thread, to ask a question:

How do you feel about Alt History fics that warps important events like the French Revolution, the Opium Wars, and so on? And at what limits should an alt history fic go before it goes way, way to far for comfort?

To be honest given that the alt history thing is set that far back, it'll be fine.

Depends on what you're changing and how many people today agree with it.

Anything dealing with real world religion I can almost guarantee you will get negative push back. Something like the French revolution, probably not so much. Unless you just use it as an excuse to bash France and french people. There are Alt history stories galore about things as recent as 9-11, so I think you're safe.
