You did not die in battle.
When the Dark Lord fell to the blades of you and your fellow heroes, you fell alongside him- Although in a rather more literal sense. With your memories lost, you were taken by the minions of your old enemy, given armor as black as night, and pumped full of evil energy for seven years.
At the end of those seven years, you began a new reign of terror- Guided by a trusted adviser who had poured honeyed words into your ear. You burned villages and slaughtered peasants with abandon- Until you began to encounter the heroes you had once ridden into battle with, warped and twisted into caricatures of their former selves. Despite fragments of memory returning, you slew them- And even until your death, you have never been able to bring yourself to regret that. They had no longer been who they were before.
After the last had been slain, and all your memories regained, you attempted to right the wrongs you had done- Rebuild the villages you had ordered sack, and replant the fields you had burned. In the end that was for nothing, as portals into the very bowels of hell opened and you found yourself entering and fighting once more to stem the tide of evil- This time, wielding a dark power all your own.
Eventually, you found that place's nameless king and slew him- But as you did so, the exit back to your world collapsed and you found yourself the ruler of a kingdom you had never wanted.
You did not die in battle. Your reign was long and prosperous, lasting just short of a thousand years. And then, old and withered, you one day faded away into darkness.
Darkness which is now warm and pulsing around you. What is going on? Do you not even get to rest in pea- The world erupts into light and noise, and you find yourself looking upwards at the face of a young girl.
"Mommy, mommy, it's a boy! Does that mean daddy will come back now?" There is only silence in response.
"Mommy? MOOOOOMMMMY!"

The first year of your new life is somehow rather disappointing.
The girl, who you learn is your older sister, is named Rose [And doesn't that name bring back memories] She's chatty and bright, but she has no idea how to take care of an infant. She feeds you a sort of nasty mash- Bread, soaked in water until it desintagrates. You're very sure that it's a horrible thing to feed an infant- But it's not like you have anything else to eat.
Over time, you force yourself to crawl and move on your own- And soon enough, you find yourself able to walk relatively well, despite the poor nutrition you have suffered.
Perhaps you should be surprised, but the language spoken in this city is the same as the one you know, so it is very easy to follow along the conversations of adults. They seem to find you unnerving, and rightly so- You've already noticed your eyes glowing yellow when you are annoyed, although nobody mentions it outright. Your sister doesn't seem to mind- In fact, after seeing it she's taken to calling you her little alley-cat. It's a bit silly, but it's the closest thing you have to a name right now.
After a while, you decide it's time to start speaking. You're not incredibly fond of it, and never have been- But you're fairly certain if you don't, Rose will never think to stop feeding you that nasty mash.

As Rose attempts once more to feed you mashed and soaked bread, you bat her hand aside. Looking her in the eye, you attempt to make your voice as dissapproving as possible- "Rose..." For a second, she looks at you in surprise and you see another face instead of hers. Then she smiles and grabs you up, and ouch, Rooose, I can't breathe...
For the next year after that, you find yourself working to become stronger, in between sleeping and dreaming of who you had once been. Even during your waking hours, you find yourself occasionally wondering what had happened to the minions you had left behind, and whether Gnarl was still getting up to old tricks.
The work you put in seems to pay off surprisingly well- Far more then you had thought it would, in fact. It's almost as if your body itself wants to grow stronger- A strange idea, to be sure, but one you cannot shake from your mind- After all, somehow, despite your absolutely insufficient diet, you are gaining weight and size. Too big for Rose to cuddle you any more, which somehow pleases and disappoints you at the same time.
Eventually the year ends, and you begin planning out your next year-

The third year of your life passes much the same as the second- you struggle with your young body during your waking hours, forcing it to grow stronger and tougher as fast as you can- Then sleep, and dream of who you once were.
When you see your reflections, you see that your eyes are steadily darkening- Where once they had been a liquid blue, they're now a pale shade of green that occasionally seem to flash yellow. In addition, you're far larger then any two year old has a right to be- Easily as tall as a three or four year old, in fact.
People have started avoiding you, and whispers trail you as you walk- You've heard people call you everything from Fae-spawn to Balverine's get- They seem almost universally sure that your parentage is of a supernatural persuasion.
The only person who doesn't go out of their way to avoid you is your sister, Rose- She still treats you as she always has, although even the other children her age seem to have caught on that there is something not quite normal about you.
Still, your memories make you more then used to ignoring the fear and hatred of others. It is no matter- You still have your sister, after all.

Finally, you seem to have grown... Well, to an acceptable size. For now. Large enough that you are often mistaken for a six or seven year old, at least. For now, you're going to hold back and do other stuff.
Actually, Rose is a bit smaller then you now- When you ask her how old she is while you're playing, she tells you she's ten. You feel kind of bad for not having known that before, but now that you do you're going to make a point of remembering it.
The troubling thing is, for a ten year old Rose is somewhat short and sickly looking. This impression is reinforced by the fact that you are bigger then her now- If you hadn't been, you might not have noticed it. When you think about it, the answer is obvious- Poor diet. You've been dealing with it well enough yourself, especially given your body seems to be at least slightly magical in nature- but she apparently does not have the same benefit.
So, you decide to start stealing food for her. Well, her and yourself, of course.
It's a tricky buisness, to be honest- People tend to take offense when you just take things that don't belong to you. Fortunately, you're still just small enough to be almost unnoticable to adults. Pies and cookies have an alarming tendency to go missing when left out on windowsills, and while the butcher's shop is locked up at night you eventually discover that you can slip in under the eaves and gather odds and ends that won't be noticed missing.
Eventually, after a close call and nearly getting caught by the Butcher, you begin turning your attention to households. Along with the food you pilfer from their larders- Which is really their own fault, for leaving their windows unlocked- You also make a habit of stealing books to read. Much to your pleasure, they have the same script as you recall- An eerie synchronity, but one you aim to make use of.
Rose seems to disapprove of stealing a bit, but she quickly warms up to the idea of better food more often. She isn't quite so skinny anymore, and you think she's grown a couple inches.
And then one morning, you wake up to hear Rose screaming. Rising to your feet quickly, you see her staring in horror at a bloody spot on her sheets.

You look around quickly. There isn't anyone else nearby, and you can't guarantee you'll be able to find anyone else out at this hour of the morning- So instead you grit your teeth and approach the old woman, even if she triggers all your warning systems.
"Excuse me- Miss? Ah, my sister is... Bleeding. I- Can you help her?" Damn it, talking had never been your strong suit- and that was without taking into account how awkward this whole thing was. You are somewhat indignant at the old woman's answering chuckle, but you choke it down.
"Yes, I think I will," She replies after she finishes laughing. "Do show me to your sister- I'm sure I can help her with her... Little problem."
It rankles a bit, but you do as she asks- It was what you were were hoping for, anyway. You're not quite sure how she manages to take what you wanted and make it raise your hackles so, honestly- But you're already taking a bit of a disliking to the woman.

Emboldened by your previous good luck with 'requisitioning' food, you begin to move on to higher quality stuff. To do so, you begin to make your way into the better off areas of Bowerstone during the night- Surprisingly, while nobles are quite prone to posting guards at every entrance, and frequently their courtyards as well, very few bother to post guards on their roofs, or in their larders. An oversight on their part, to be sure- One you are more then happy to exploit ruthlessly.
Rose seems to have gotten over her dislike of stealing fairly well- In fact, she will now occasionally ask for specific foodstuffs to be stolen at least once a month- Fairly regularly, in fact, and generally chocolate. You decide not to worry to much about that- She's hardly in danger of getting overweight, and after trying some of the nicer chocolates for yourself you quite understand the appeal.
More often, you find yourself sitting at home and reading- Learning the history of the land and it's denizens. Your preferred author of local history and legends is Ser Roland Fairfax- The bastard son of the famous Lady Fairfax and one of her many consorts. This is due to his dry, witty sense of humor and open detest of Heroes- Who you find were killed off by the populace centuries ago, much to your amusement. Of course, when you try to explain just why it's so amusing to Rose it tends to fall flat- Especially considering she seems rather fond of the tales of heroes and chivalry herself.
Around midway through the year you and Rose are approached by a rat-faced man, calling himself Arfur. He claims to have been a 'Street rat' himself when he was younger, and comments that while you seem to be doing well for yourself- Which raises some alarms in your head- He would be more then happy to take the two of you in and take care of you both. Rose seems hesitant, but vaguely interested- But something seems wrong about this situation to you.
