"Hai, Zero. All teams are ready for the operation."

"Understood. Remember, once we have commenced the operation, we must see it through - we only have one shot at this."

"Hai!"

Cornelia li Britannia, Second Princess of Britannia and Viceroy of Area 11, groaned.

"Oh, Cornelia, are you alright? I hope I didn't call you at a bad hour."

Despite her discomfort, Cornelia managed a smile. "It's alright, Marrybel. I'm just…feeling worn out dealing with the Black Knights."

"You are? I thought that they'd been quiet as of late."

"Yes, they have. And that's what worries me - Zero is not one to act brashly. Every action he does is measured, so if he's chosen to hide with the rats for so long, it means that he is planning something big. And I'm not sure what he has in mind."

"Well, whatever it is, you need to be well rested to prepare for it - trying to put down terrorism while tired is a recipe for disaster."

"...I suppose you have a point. So, how is California?"

"Mild right now, probably due to get colder soon. I hope you can settle things and hand the reins off to Euphie before winter hits."

"That would be nice, but sadly unlikely. Clovis' mismanagement of Area 11 has made many think it is better to be criminals than become Honorary Britannians. Though, who knows - perhaps I may sort things out more swiftly than expected and have time to join you in the Homeland."

"Well, I know I could have used you here when the Wings of Talleyrand were active. Though, I think your time here would best be spent with Laila - ever since what had happened with Clovis, well.."

Ah yes, that. Cornelia did not like thinking about what had happened to her brother before she had taken his position. When this Zero had first made his debut, he had led a force of terrorists in Shinjuku in humiliating Clovis' forces. Only through the actions of her sister's Knight Suzaku Kururugi had they managed to avoid defeat, but Clovis himself had not escaped unscathed. While he had survived the battle, his sanity had not - the Elevens had done something that had induced a nervous breakdown in him, which had been enough to see him removed from the Viceroyalty and committed to a sanitarium in the homeland. He was making some progress in recovering, but it was slow going.

Only once Zero was dead would she consider the slight avenged.

"By the way, how is Euphie?"

"Doing well - she's currently showing her knight around the gardens. I do think she is a little too close to him."

Marrybell laughed at that. "I'd say that Guilford is a little too close to you."

Cornelia suppressed a blush. "Very funny. Though, back to the matter at hand, I doubt Zero will remain hidden for long - especially not after our last engagement."

Said engagement had been an assault to purge Nagasaki Ghetto of suspected terrorist elements. Though Zero had intervened before she could conduct the operation in earnest, much of the area had been leveled, leaving the Elevens without anywhere to call home. A pity, but that was the price of terrorism.

Just as Cornelia readied to speak again, though, the transmission started to cut out. Cornelia was left surprised for a moment, only for that to give way to annoyance - it seemed Zero was about to make his move.

"Cornelia, what's going on-"

At last the feed of Marrybell was replaced by a new image - that of Zero. As the background came into focus, Cornelia almost balked - it seemed as though he was aboard a ship on the ocean. Really? He had actually left Area 11? Clearly he was more cowardly than she had thought.

"I am Zero!"

Theatric as always, it seemed.

"Once again, Britannia has committed an atrocity - Viceroy Cornelia ordered her forces to purge the remains of Nagasaki Ghetto, and slaughter all who lived within. Her forces compiled without hesitation, and though I intervened to ensure their survival, all of those who lived there are now without homes. Injustice and cruelty continue unabated, such that we of the Black Knights are forced to take drastic action. Opposing Britannia is no longer enough. It seems that we must strike a blow beyond Area 11 for our message to be understood."

Cornelia turned to one of her aides. "Inform all bases we have near Area 11 and the neighboring Areas to prepare for an attack - Zero seems to be stirring up rhetoric for one."

"Yes, Viceroy!"

"Yes, we must expand our reach if Britannia is to learn. Thus, it is time that we took the fight to the Britannian Homeland itself!"

Cornelia just barely had time to process what Zero said before the transmission was replaced once more by the image of Marrybell, who looked very perplexed. "...What did he just say?"

"PRINCESS MARRYBELL, WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!" exclaimed a soldier who burst through the doorway to Marrybell's room, just as the sound of an air raid siren filled the air, followed by the distant rumble of an artillery shell detonating.

Cornelia and Marrybell both shared one last look that conveyed one emotion: what. the. FUCK?!

The%20sound%20of%20a%20loud%20horn%20filled%20the%20air,%20annoying%20the%20guard.%20Groaning,%20she%20turned%20out%20toward%20the%20ocean,%20only%20to%20freeze%20in%20shock.

Seeing%20an%20enemy%20fleet%20on%20the%20shores%20of%20your%20homeland%20-%20which%20had%20never%20been%20invaded%20before%20-%20did%20that%20to%20you.

The%20guardwoman%20-%20Patricia%20-%20stayed%20frozen%20for%20a%20few%20more%20minutes.%20Then%20she%20hit%20an%20alarm%20and%20ran%20for%20it.

OVer%20the%20waves,%20the%20fleet%20surged%20forward.%20The%20majority%20of%20it%20was%20compromised%20of%20naval%20vessels,%20but%20other%20strange%20floaters%20were%20observed%20as%20well.%20At%20the%20nearest%20beach,%20the%20Britannian%20military%20set%20up%20a%20blockade,%20only%20to%20watch%20in%20amazement%20as%20several%20submarines%20suddenly%20took%20to%20the%20sky%20and%20started%20opening%20fire%20on%20them.%20Joining%20them%20were%20bombers%20that%20seemed%20to%20materialize%20out%20of%20thin%20air,%20alongside%20several%20other%20gigantic%20aircraft%20and%20what%20looked%20like%20women%20in%20flying%20armor.%20It%20took%20only%20minutes%20for%20the%20defenders%20on%20the%20beach%20to%20be%20wiped%20out%20-%20just%20in%20time%20for%20the%20first%20wave%20of%20surface%20vessels%20to%20land.%20In%20an%20instant,%20the%20strange%20floaters%20rammed%20over%20the%20shoreline%20and%20flipped%20their%20floating%20devices,%20revealing%20themselves%20to%20be%20tanks%20as%20their%20tracks%20dug%20into%20the%20ground.%20Hovercraft%20soon%20made%20landfall,%20some%20releasing%20Knightmares,%20others%20different%20varieties%20of%20tanks%20and%20APCs,%20and%20still%20other%20deploying%20infantry,%20which%20ranged%20from%20relatively%20normal%20soldiers%20wielding%20what%20appeared%20to%20be%20laser%20katanas%20to%20several%20types%20of%20cyborg.%20With%20nothing%20to%20impede%20them,%20the%20army%20began%20advancing%20on%20the%20beach.

Further%20inland,%20a%20Britannian%20garrison%20barely%20had%20time%20to%20react%20when%20several%20Black%20Knight%20soldiers%20burst%20out%20of%20the%20ground,%20wielding%20strange%20weapons%20vaguely%20resembling%20machine%20guns.%20Moments%20later,%20the%20guns%20revealed%20themselves%20to%20be%20some%20type%20of%20energy%20weapon%20as%20the%20ambushed%20soldiers%20were%20vaporized.%20Noticing%20this,%20an%20attack%20helicopter%20moved%20into%20to%20support%20them,%20only%20to%20suddenly%20be%20flung%20out%20of%20the%20sky%20by%20an%20unknown%20force.%20The%20soldiers%20turned%20to%20a%20nearby%20clearing,%20where%20what%20looked%20like%20a%20school%20girl%20was%20standing.%20She%20merely%20waved%20them%20off,%20after%20which%20a%20friendly%20helicopter%20arrived%20and…well,%20it%20turned%20into%20a%20walker%20that%20started%20firing%20missiles%20at%20an%20oncoming%20Britannian%20helicopter.%20Then%20the%20walker%20was%20reinforced%20by%20tanks%20that%20just%20seemed%20to%20appear%20out%20of%20thin%20air.

At%20the%20heart%20of%20the%20base,%20Marrybell%20had%20finally%20sortied%20into%20a%20custom%20Sutherland.%20Alas,%20the%20main%20force%20of%20the%20enemy%20had%20already%20broken%20through,%20and%20her%20forces%20were%20now%20facing%20the%20elites%20of%20the%20Black%20Knights%20-%20the%20Red%20Unit%20known%20as%20the%20Guren,%20six%20of%20its%20production%20model%20variations%20known%20as%20the%20Gekka%20(including%20one%20with%20a%20claw%20matching%20the%20Guren%27s)%20and%20another%20Knightmare%20that%20had%20been%20derived%20from%20the%20Gekka,%20which%20was%20apparently%20called%20the%20Sougetsu.

Despite%20the%20odds%20stacked%20against%20her,%20Marrybell%20couldn%27t%20help%20but%20smirk.%20%22Really,%20Zero.%20You%20couldn%27t%20come%20to%20face%20me%20in%20person?%22

Marrybell%20was%20about%20to%20throw%20a%20quip%20back%20at%20him%20when%20the%20ground%20started%20shaking.%20Confused,%20Marrybell%20tried%20to%20throw%20a%20question%20at%20the%20Terrorist,%20only%20for%20the%20words%20to%20die%20in%20her%20throat%20as%20something%20made%20its%20way%20toward%20-%20a%20Knightmare,%20as%20it%20turned%20out.%20Or,%20well,%20maybe%20not.

Now,%20for%20those%20of%20you%20reading%20this%20on%20Spacebattles,%20yes,%20I%20posted%20a%20completely%20different%20version%20of%20this%20chapter%20earlier.%20I%20really%20didn%27t%20like%20how%20it%20turned%20out,%20so%20I%20decided%20to%20totally%20rewrite%20it.%20This%20version%20I%20am%20far%20more%20satisfied%20with.

Yeah,%20crazy.%20Also%20a%20totally%20shameless%20ripoff%20of%20the%20opening%20scene%20from%20Red%20Alert%203.%20No,%20I%20don%27t%20care.

Most%20of%20you%20probably%20noticed%20that%20the%20Black%20Knights%20got%20some%20extra%20stuff%20in%20the%20form%20of%20all%20the%20units%20and%20technologies%20used%20by%20the%20Empire%20of%20the%20Rising%20Sun%20from%20Red%20Alert%203.%20That%20part%20was%20obvious.%20As%20for%20the%20tanks%20and%20bombers%20that%20turned%20invisible,%20though?%20Those%20were%20from%20CnC%203:%20Tiberium%20Wars.%20I%27m%20going%20to%20try%20and%20include%20elements%20from%20every%20Command%20and%20Conquer%20series%20in%20this%20story,%20because%20I%20feel%20like%20the%20different%20sides%20would%20develop%20different%20CnC%20technologies%20on%20their%20own.%20So,%20for%20example,%20maybe%20the%20EU%20develops%20some%20of%20the%20stuff%20the%20Allies%20from%20RA3%20and%20GDI%20from%20CnC3%20use,%20while%20the%20Black%20Knights%20take%20after%20Nod%20and%20the%20Empire%20of%20the%20Rising%20Sun.
