"I need to know if you'd kept in touch with any of the other girls who were in Lustrum's gang with you and Annette."
"You… but why?"
"Well… let's just say–" He hesitated before finally continuing. "You remember all of us weren't exactly very good at the whole 'birth control' thing when we got down to it back then."
"Mmm… God, yes." Zoe said with what he realized to his surprise was a small, delighted shudder. "I know we had a few scares when we–" She cut herself off and her voice took on a teasing, flirtatious tone. "Are you finally ready to move on a bit? Maybe do a little flash from the past with some of your old lovers?"
[...]
"It's complicated, but long story short, I met someone–" Danny began, but Zoe interrupted.
Zoe's tone turned sly and the teasing grew stronger. "Oh-hoh, do go on."
"Not like that. It's a girl."
"Ohh. Danny boy." Zoe purred playfully.
"She thinks she's my kid."
"Oh." That cut Zoe's flirtatiousness short.
Danny struggled for a moment to make it sound more plausible before trying to explain. "The girl has access to some… um… convincing DNA evidence. The thing is, she was adopted and we don't know who the actual biological mom might be."
"Oh…" Zoe murmured, the earlier mirth draining from her tone. "Oh, Danny… alright. I can ask around, and see if I can get hold of anyone who's still around, but I don't think it's going to be as simple as you think."
"What do you mean?"
"Danny. Dear heart…" She began using an old term of endearment for him that she hadn't used since she'd married Alan. "I know you spent a large amount of time pickled during your freshman year, but you and Annette weren't just hooking up with the girls in Lustrum's gang. Every sorority on campus knew who you two were."
"Oh, come on!" Danny said, trying but failing to rein in his indignation. "We weren't that bad."
Zoe snorted before rattling off a name. And then another. And then another. As the names kept coming and flashes of memory came to the front of his mind's eye, Danny grew paler and paler. Almost every single name was familiar: he could attach a face and at least one cocktail order to each one. Hell, he could almost see Annette's flirtatious smirk before she approached each of them.
Had they really been that bad in college?
Okay, maybe they were. There was just something about that wild time in freshman year when the world felt like his oyster. After all, Alan made it his life's mission to be able to afford an expensive bourbon they'd seen in the first liquor store they'd ever gotten kicked out of (a chain Alan conveniently owned as of five years ago, and it was the smuggest Danny had ever seen the man).
His own mission?
To Satisfy the tall, devastatingly gorgeous, curly-haired TA who'd inexplicably given attention to his awkward freshman flirting.
To this day, he was reasonably sure he had managed it.
He hadn't quite expected the consequences of that to have ended up falling in this particular way.
Danny bowed his head and ran fingers across his scalp. This was going to be a long night.
