    Trying to get it on chat, but I get an error message.

    Now how do I go about accessing the chat from, say, mibbit?

    Do you mean the IRC channel? If so, use mIRC. It's a free and easy to use IRC client that can also be massively modified if you are into that sort of thing. I used to use it back when I was into live chatting and it's pretty user friendly and has a decent help section for things you don't understand.
