Governor's Gambit - Star Wars SI into Imperial Governor

Hahahahaha! Weeeze, I legit lost it when he popped the tension by discovering the bitch's actual influence was purely psychological, of which he had no weight on him of, since his whole fear was in the fact that she could ruin him with her POLITICAL power.

She's actually so toxic she didn't even HAVE any good personal relationships or favors to even BEGIN to bother our glorious Moff.

This was the greatest chapter since I can recall just for this fact alone! Screw anti-climactic, this was perfectly climactic for the narcissistic bellend!

I spent most of my life afraid of my grandfather. The only way I could resist was to seek relief through the wrong means.

He wasn't a bad person, he just tried to raise me the same way he was raised, not realizing that times have changed.

At some point, I became so scared that I did certain things that led me to confront other fears. And I simply... could no longer be afraid of an old man living out his final years.

And with that came liberation.

The moment Las was able to confront his mother, I experienced the same feeling I had then. It's a wonderful moment in this work, one I'll try to preserve in my memories.

Thank you.

Even since Yavin, the Emperor had been cracking down on things. The ISB had been taking a more prominent role in the Empire as a whole.

And where did that leave Military Intelligence? Where did that leave her?

Nowhere, that's what. The ISB had recently been granted expanded privileges, courtesy of the Emperor himself. What had once been some competing institutional overlap between MI and the ISB now no longer existed.
MI: "Fear me Rebels!"

Rebels: "I don't even know who you are? Military Intelligence, is that some branch of the ISB?"

I will be honest, didn't even know Military Intelligence was a thing before reading this fic.
If nothing else, Zyx was excited to try some of the city's food. As an agent, she often went long periods of time simply eating ration packs. Nutritious, but bland.
At least that is something you and Las can bond over. He probably chows on them during long paperwork sessions.
Then again, compared to the museum she'd seen on Coruscant, the entire city was small.
That's not fair when the city world has a thousands of years head start.
"No. Not yet. You gave me a look just a second ago. What is it?"

His eyes met hers, and clearly spotted her determination before relenting.

"Well, to be honest. It's your outfit. It's dreadfully boring."
Ma'am it is within the secretary's right to judge you if your style is wack. Garp convinced Las to write it into law.
"And if I cared enough, I would go on this family vacation. Thankfully for you, I am not a cruel man. And even if I did care enough to go, I'm so absolutely swamped with the job of running the sector that I can't exactly spare the time, now can I?"
Considering it has been 2-3 months since his promotion. That argument does seem fair on the surface.
"Las. You've done well for yourself. Far better than expected. Good."

Zyx had to restrain her emotions. That was, bar none, the most praise she'd ever heard Mother give to anyone. Period. It simply never happened.
"Express love for my children? That seems like an inefficient way to command them?"

No wonder Jir fit into the Empire so well.
"Hmm…This is an advantage. Join the ISB. The jump should be easy to cover. If you can be assigned to this sector, even better."

Zyx wanted to protest. Join the ISB? Why would she ever want to join those sniveling, propaganda obsessed, paranoid bastards? They were stumbling fools, rancors in a porcelain shop, jumping at every shadow. MI had its issues, its internal rivalries, but at least they were professional about it. But she stayed her tongue. Even years apart hadn't washed away the conditioning.
At least Myto's ISB have some competent leadership. Maybe Zyx can lean more on the HAVEN side if the ISB work culture is too much of an issue.
Noticing the looks, she scoffed. "Can't you see? The Empire is doomed to failure. After that debacle with Alderaan, it's plain for most. The Empire won't last the next decade, if that. Our families best bet of staying in power is ensuring this sector is as prepared for transition into Rebel hands when that happens. It'll secure us positions in the future galactic government."

It sounded insane. It sounded like treason. Yet, despite the fact that Mother had always been an Imperial hardliner, despite the fact that she ran an Imperial Academy, despite the fact that she'd personally been a friend of Wilhuff Tarkin…it made sense. It clicked.

Jir Mola only cared about her legacy. Nothing else.
Sweet Force Jir is the average CK3 player. Her children aren't her children they are pieces in a game.

Also Jir spouting the thoughts a lot of fans of this fic have been saying. Jir talking about surrendering to the Rebel like they would take her in a heartbeat.
"...commandant."

Mother turned to him, eyes narrowing just the slightest amount.

"What? Have you something to add?" Her tone clearly telling him to either speak productively or not speak at all.

"Your rank is Commandant." He continued, the slightest giggle escaping his mouth.

Before Jir could respond, Las burst out into a full blown laugh. Hands on his stomach, keeled over his desk, laughing until he cried.

This went on and on, Mother trying and failing to stop him. Only when she seemed on the verge of slapping him did he calm down just enough to explain.

"Heh…your rank is-heheheh-its just Commandant! HAHAHAH!!!" He burst out laughing again. "You have absolutely NO power over me!"

As he said this, he started typing something into his terminal, giggles still escaping him.

"Las Mola. I am your Mother. You will silence this foolishness and listen to me." Mother didn't raise her voice, she never did, but at this moment she seemed poised to scream at the man.
The one thing new-Las and old-Las can agree on: You may be his mother, but you are not his mom. I wonder if the embers of old-Las are coming out for this one final act of revenge.
Instead, Las simply turned to her. "I've accepted your transfer request."

"Good, now-"

"And immediately discharged you."
For all the fear and trauma Jir inflicted on her children to control them, she doesn't have power at this point. Her political network is in shambles, her power was always borrowed from others, and Las is so far above her in the political ladder she can't reach her. Without that fear of retribution and no love given, Las has only antipathy left for her.

The worst part is it is unlikely any of the children she raised will be there for her. Maybe she can join the Guild as an instructor? If Las hasn't blacklisted her from that as well.
"Now!" He said, standing up. "I've got an R&D ship showcase in twenty minutes and a meeting with banking clan representatives after that, so all of you need to shoo! Get! Scram!"
The fact Las still had his day planned out even with this family intervention scheduled. If they really want to get closer maybe talk to his friends/subordinates?
And scram they did. Alvi and Shal still in a haze, Dornun still laughing his ass off, and Zyx reveling in this newfound feeling.

The feeling of freedom.
Zyx before: "I Hate the ISB! Working for them will be awful."

Zyx now: "Hello ISB, I am your new agent! I am just loving this feeling of freedom!"

From my understanding in a perfect galaxy (ie one where the Empire isn't a corrupt cesspit) the ISB would be mainly for internal threats (rebels, traitors etc) and the MI would be for external threats (like say the Yuuzhan Vong if the invaded earlier, or the Ssi Ruuvi and other unknown region threats), but since at this point in time there are no external threats and a major internal one so it makes sense for funding to be diverted to the ISB

But that's for a perfect galaxy, we all know the true reason why the ISB is getting MI's funds

Fun fact: apparently the Inquisition were technically part of the MI's organizational structure. So their clown show also probably contributed to MI's decline.

Besides the Inquisitors, most of MI were mainly in advisory roles for other Imperial organizations rather than commanding them. They would gather information and either pass it on to the relevant departments or act on it themselves. When they were in command of operations it seemed to be an in-house affair almost completely. Destab for instance didn't have much known about them, but were suspected of committing a lot of war crimes and terrorism.

Meanwhile the ISB ended up strolling out in the open allowed to take direct control of fleets and armies to pursue their objectives. They status as loyalty and political officers having them in more overt positions and actions. The MI on the other hand was focused on more covert and subtle tactics.

Generally the ISB were the publicly seen law enforcement and investigation side, while MI were the clandestine espionage kept out of sight side. If the Empire wants to be seen they send the ISB, if the Empire doesn't want you to know they were there they send MI. The ISB will kick down your door and announce your crimes, MI will slip poison into your drink for speaking out of turn one too many times.

That was glorious, especially since Jir has absolutely no recourse. Who will side with her when she got herself dismissed because she was in the process of trying to give orders to a Moff in his own office ? Plus a MI operative and two Navy personnels who were very much outside of her chain of command. How many ranks above her is Las, even ?

The fact that there's a disconnect between Old Las' and New Las' memories probably helped as well. Any "conditioning" (be it actual conditioning and/or familial/emotional ties) that Old Las went through got scrubbed by New Las' takeover, cutting Jyr's usual ways to control her family at the knees.

Hope we'll get to see Myrthos' reaction to this. Sure, they probably would've preferred a more violent and/or grandstanding way to get rid of Mama Mola, but I can see them appreciating the sheer humiliation that's been inflicted on her, like she wasn't even worthy of her son's time. And now she gets to languish in irrelevance, stewing in her own failure...

At least 2, probably 3 or more. He has an Admiral as a subordinate and I believe there is a Rear Admiral rank between Admiral and Commandant.

The political waves are gonna be funny, man just did a unknowing power play in securing himself as head of the family in a move that will get the MC further noticed by their peers. The actual influence or lack their of does not really matter in this regard though the undoubtable many enemies his mother has made might actually warm up to the MC after such a ruthless move. And for the local political scene its another good example of the new Moff showcasing he is perfectly willing to 'abuse' his power both in nepotistically bringing his sister into the fold, and completely ruining what was left of his mothers career.

Commandant is a specialized facility manager rank but not a proper part of the rank structure itself and thus could be equivalent to borderline anything but given she was only in charge of a training facility, and not necessarily any of the really, REALLY important ones id be pessimistic and put her as equivalent to LT Commander, Full Commander at absolute best so 4 to 5ish ranks below Admiral. But that's just my thoughts/understanding of where she would be rank wise compared to other ranks.

What a shame. While momy dearest was... Well, i assume our opinions were kinda biased , the fact she walked and openly pointed out that empire are done and we must look for opportunities to secure our survival and not be fanatical xenophobic assholes... Well, she clearly two three heads smarter than average imperial politician and lars just threw her away. What a shame.

By the way, where is moms photo? Are she beautiful milf or old crone?

"I'm a Moff. You are a Commandant. While I understand that some things do get mixed out here in the Outer Rim, I'm pretty sure I know how the chain of command works."
I called it, he really is completely out of her reach nowadays.

Even if she is completely right in how fucked the Empire is.

How many ranks above her is Las, even ?
Officially, after the dismissal of the Senate, only Grand Moffs ( afaik only used in case of open rebellion or similar ) and Grand Admirals ( Only 12 and all were more political positions, only Zaarin and Thrawn were actually competent ). And Palpy himself, of course.

In Legends there were also the Supreme Commander ( Vader when Palpy wasn't angry with him ), Grand Vizier Sate Pestage, and Warlord of the Empire, Zsinj, as a reward for murdering his mother for staying loyal to the Republic instead of the new Empire. That's a very small list of persons, for a million worlds galactic empire...

There is also teh Executor position in Legends that Palpy created for Luke in Dark Empire, but I'm pretty sure that didn't exist until then, so a few years from now. Also never understood why should Luke should accept that position, at least in teh films you know Palpy was a father figure for Anakin, but Luke didn't had any reason for accepting that position. Dark Empire is pretty bad at caracterization ( still less awful than the sequels, in any case ).
