Prologue: Reflections
It was a cold winter morning in Kansas. The snow was billowing and swirling in an icy wind, and all that could be seen for many miles was a white wonderland. The trees, fields, roofs, and roads were covered in a layer of snow that didn't seem to want to budge. Cars and trucks were barely seen through the blowing snowflakes and frosty winds.
A red pickup truck pulled up from the long road to a large dirt parking lot that by now had a healthy layer of snow that was only disturbed by tire treads and the footsteps of the costumers of the establishment right next to the lot. Behind the large building was a long hill where several children in bright colored jackets, snow pants, boots and hats were racing on sleds that crunched and slid over the freezing snow.
Back at the lot a man could be seen parking his red truck, and stepping out onto the lot. He wore a puffy red winter hat, a red plaid winter jacket, and thick blue jeans that were insulated for the winter. The layer of snow crunched beneath his black snow boots as he walked towards the awning at the large building's entrance. It looked to be a large old manor from the early days of America, when Kansas was just beginning to become a settled state. It's walls were white, and it's long roof well and snugly fit.
The man took off his large round black glasses and placed them in his glasses holder which he returned to his pocket afterwards.
His shoulders were slumped, and his gait was somewhat slow despite his powerful presence.
Rubbing his hands together and blowing on them, he picked up his pace, quickly arriving at the entrance of the manor.
Opening the front doors with the clattering of small bells above the door, he found himself in a warm brightly lit interior, lit by warm glass chandeliers that hung from the wooden ceiling, lighting up the walls that were covered in pictures, memorabilia, and paintings of the many owners of this manor through the years. The interior of the manor had been gutted many years before, and renovated to become a diner for the passing truckers and families on the road.
The clank of silverware and the sounds of people talking and chewing replaced the sounds of the wind and cars on the road outside. The man took off his hat, and his face could be fully seen, revealing his healthy, but pale skin, piercing blue eyes, graying-black hair and strong jaw.
Grayish-black stubble could be seen on his chin, likely the result of not having shaven for several days, and his eyes seemed slightly lidded, as if there were many things weighing upon his mind. Stuffing his hat into his jacket pocket, he walked to the reception, and a waitress who was standing there and reading something on her phone quickly put her phone away and greeted him with a smile.
"Hello sir, is it just you today?" She asked politely, her green eyes warm and pleasant, and a lock of her curly orange hair seemed to fall from above her ear across her face, causing her to look embarrassed and fix it with one hand. She wore a white dress shirt, red bowtie and a black dress pants. A small plaque on her shirt pocket gave her name in black letters. Katrina.
"Yes Ms. Katrina, it's just me" The man said, his voice slightly slow as if he was taking some time to speak.
"Wonderful. Would you like a window seat, or is a table by the bar to your liking?" She asked, motioning with her pale hand to a large long glass window facing the road, then to a shining wooden bar, behind which had an impressive showing of alcohol and spirits.
"A window table would be nice" The man said, his voice finally picking up with life in it.
"Of course sir. Follow me" She said, leading him quickly to a table right next to the middle of the wall-long window.
He sat down on a wooden chair with a cushion for his back and on the seat.
"A waitress will come get your order shortly. In the meantime, would you like a drink? Coffee, Tea, or perhaps something stronger?" She asked, pulling out a small pad and pen.
"A coffee. Two sugars. One half n half please" He said, giving her a smile.
"Of course sir, coming right up" She said, writing down his order, before leaving and talking to a waitress who was loitering next to the bar before returning to her post at the entrance.
The other waitress, a young lady in her early twenties, with long brown hair, light skin, blue eyes and a slightly pudgy body quickly retrieved some fresh bread with butter, his coffee, and a glass of water. She also took a large laminated menu that she tucked under her arm. It was a miracle that she could carry everything. It seemed she was quite good at what she did.
She made her way over to his table and placed the coffee and water in front of him, while placing the water next to it. Then, she handed him the large menu which he took with a nod of thanks.
"So, do you know what you're ordering or would you like some time to read the menu?" The lady asked, to which the man responded.
"I've been here before. I'll take the Eggs Benedict, a large glass of Orange Juice, and a French Toast platter" He said, giving her a nod.
"Of course sir" She replied, writing down the order on a note pad before taking his menu that he handed back to her. Then she turned away and walked back to the kitchen. He could hear her giving the order to the cooks.
The man rose from his seat and walked over to the Men's bathroom where he washed his hands in the sink, and dried off his hands with the large hand blow drier on the wall.
He then took off his jacket and returned to the table he sat at, placing the jacket on the back of the seat.
The man looked out the window, seeing the illusory phantoms of his parents standing mere feet away from the glass. Then, his wife, Lois Lane walked next to them, stopping to look at him, fear in her eyes. The look she had on her face when she died. When the Joker blew up Metropolis, and tricked him into killing her.
"Ma...Pa...Lois" He whispered as he closed his eyes. A tear fell from his right eye, glistening in the white reflection of the snow outside.
"I'm sorry" He said softly, hanging his head and taking a sip of his coffee.
He took another look at his reflection the window.
He let out a long sigh, reaching his hand out slowly to the phantoms of those he lost in the blast. The Nuclear bomb the Joker set off. His Ma and Pa had come to visit him at the Daily Planet that day, to spend a day with him to congratulate him on his promotion. Only for them to be annihilated in the blast.
His Wife. His child. His Ma. His Pa. All gone. Because of that madman that Bruce refused to put down.
The sharp pain of that day returned to him, and the rage he felt when he tore the Joker in half began to muster within his chest, only for it to be subdued.
He had won. He had defeated Bruce. He had stopped the wars. He had made sure that crime would be almost completely extinguished across the world.
It took sacrifices, and the lives of many. But he had finally won.
Bruce was locked up on a prison on Saturn. One he could not escape from.
Everything had gone according to his will. Yet it all began to feel so hollow. When he looked at himself lately, he didn't see the man he wanted to be. Somewhere along the line he had slipped off track and fell down further and further into the dark.
He let out a long sigh.
He had gone from a savior, to a cruel dictator, and he was beginning to think he was wrong.
He had consulted Diana in the past, and all she did was scoff. Telling him that he was beginning to grow soft, before softening her eyes and voice, pulling him into a deep kiss, reassuring him that what he had done was correct. That these feelings where those she had dealt with in the past as well. That they would go away soon.
Yet they never did go away, and in the times of solitude when there was nobody there to tell him that he was wrong to think so, these feelings began to sink into his heart, and grip his mind.
He had won. The world was his. But at what cost?
Could he ever be the Man of Tomorrow again, or would he forever be Kal The Conqueror?
It hurt. This wasn't how this was supposed to end.
He was supposed to be the Hero, yet here he was. He had achieved world peace. Yet it was at the end of a sword instead of through joined hands.
As his thoughts wandered, the snow drifted by, blown in the wind. A car or truck would occasionally pass by the diner on the lonely road, it's headlights pushing through the thick snowfall. and the sounds of the other customers eating, drinking and gossiping surrounded him.
Their mundane lives were rather simple, and they did not have to deal with controlling the world. Yet it was that simplicity that stung him deeply. That very innocence and simple life was what he wished he could have again. Yet it was completely impossible in this universe.
"In this universe..." He mumbled, not grasping what he was saying fully.
Then his eyes lit up.
"This universe" He said, a thoughtful look crossing his face, and his tears began to dry.
Of course. Why didn't he think of this before?
Perhaps he could take a vacation to another universe? One where nobody knew him. One where he could live out that innocent life again. One where he could be Clark Kent once more. He would have to make preparations as soon as he could.
Perhaps living in a new universe could give him the insight and conclusions he desperately struggled with?
His mood drastically brightened. Perhaps in this new universe he could see Lois again? His Ma. His Pa.
No. They wouldn't be his Ma and Pa he knew. It wouldn't be his Lois.
He sighed, taking another sip of his coffee. He really was getting old. Then he stopped himself mid thought. Old for a Human perhaps, but Under a yellow sun, he was immortal. He would live as long as it existed. He simply would stop aging altogether, looking in his forties for as long as he lived.
The waitress came by with his food and his large glass of orange juice.
"I hope you enjoy the meal, sir" She said before placing the plates in front of him and he took his silverware from the cloth napkin on the table.
"Thank you" He said, giving her a nod and beginning to eat.
She turned away and walked over to serve another customer that had recently arrived.
He enjoyed the time he spent in these small town diners, with their old timey rustic charm. The hall of justice was nice, and the big city was fun, but sometimes he needed his vacations and time away from his work that seemed to never give him much free time.
Ruling the world wasn't easy, and it was time he delegated that role to Diana for a while.
He knew she would want to come with him. To protect him. To love him and be by his side wherever he went, but he needed this time to himself. Time to be the man he hadn't been for so long. The man he secretly yearned to become again.
