This is a drawing from when I was in high-school, my thought process was a mirrored imaged of an angel and his corrupted state side by side. in my setting, when an angel is fallen or taken by the darker forces of the world, they develop a split personality that takes the driver seat while the main personality is shunted into the trunk. This happens due to a natural part of their being itself, when it becomes to much to handle the secondary persona is pulled up to handle it. like the 2 phases of a boss fight, phase one is the standard Darksouls experience, phase two is Malenia on crystal meth, when p2 has to take the controller is when all bets are off, you are not dealing with a heavenly being who has honor anymore, you are now dealing with the fallen celestial who will disembowel you and then feed it to you with a straight face.
When an angel truly falls is when things get bad, their light becomes stained with whatever caused their fall. an example would be an angel falling to rage, causing their powers to be fire like and boiling the very air when they become agitated. The two personalities merge in an amalgamation of their two behaviors, they could be as gentle as cotton then be as sharp tongued as barbed wire withing seconds.
Fallen are capable of rising to their former heights, these usually take place as trials that are so personalized that even those who fell for the same reason have drastically different trials, when they succeed the two personalities merge properly into one single being again. Even if they fail, they still have character development in some way, whether their mind are clearer, their powers burn slightly less as it travels through their being, or their physical bodies stabilize towards their true forms.
The specific angel in the image is Keaten, who fell through wrath because the village he protects and spends time at was sold out to bandits by the local lord due to his Greed. Keaten was so enraged by this that he Vaporized the lord and his keep by focusing his rage and power into one spear throw into the middle of the lords castle. the aftermath has his temperament became quite volatile when provoked enough, his arm was riddled with angry red crystalline spikes after he throw the spear. His wings, once white and feathered are now bat like and leathery. his holy flames became black and insidious, burning even the soul, consuming them to fuel and strengthen him. His fighting style shifted to become ruthless and brutal, allowing no reprieve from his blows and anger. His armor stained grey by the ashes of his foes. despite it all, he still protects what few from that village, the people he freed after dealing with the lord and his bandits have followed him since then. Showing that no matter how far he had fallen, he still had his priorities and morals, even if thy are warped by his merger.
