Tick.

Tock.

Slowly, you open your eyes. Everything is fuzzy, how much did you have to drink last night? What were in those little girl drinks as the bartender called them? A surge of pain like a jackhammer on concrete rushes through you skull. Oh, god he was lying this is the worst hangover you've ever had. You don't remember having all that many. Sure you bought like three because of that cute girl egging you on, but that shouldn't be enough to leave you like this, right? You shake your head to attempt to clear out some of the fuzz clouding your memories. You take a better look at the room around you. This, This is not the room you rented last night. There doesn't seem to be a bed anywhere. Did you just pass out in a room somewhere? Okay, let's try to think this out rationally. You don't remember leaving the building. So you have to be somewhere inside the inn. Or maybe someone dragged you somewhere. But you doubt this is outside. You take a look around at the room you've been residing in. You're still groggy from the hangover but the room is eerily nondescript, like something your mind makes up while you're dreaming. Something about this is wrong. It's picking at you. What in the world is wrong here?

Soft footsteps seem to come out of nowhere. The room feels larger then it did before. Stretched out where you can't just see who's walking around.

"You've come to a terrible fate haven't you?"

You look to the side it came from, nothing.

"To be chosen like that. A pity you didn't come a day later. Then this wouldn't have happened to you."

Again nothing.

"Did you wonder why you were the talk of the town? It's certainly not for your rapier like wit. Certainly didn't catch anything about what was going on did you? All they had to do was throw a pretty girl at you and you were putty. Nothing like the last outsider they brought in. He was some sort of hunter. Not that he lasted very long. Did you wonder why people offered you free drinks? That they were so friendly with someone they never met before? It's not because of old country charm or whatever you were thinking back then. Oh no. They needed a Sacrifice, can you hear the capital S? Oh I can tell now I've pierced through that thick skull of yours. Another lamb to be slaughtered at an altar to a dark god. Well not that it's a god. More of a demon really but hey what do mortals know about the dynamics involved in the situation? But yeah, lucky you. You've get to be feed to a demon. Sacrifice number one hundred."

The figure steps out. His bright white gloves are the only thing that can really define him. He just looks nondescript. Painfully so.

You try to get a word in edgewise against this guy. It's pretty hard actually. He keeps speaking over you like you aren't even there. That or he doesn't actually care enough to hear what you have to say.

"Wondering why you were chosen? Because no one would look for you. Who are you really? Can you name something important that you've done? Some world changing action. Someone saved, something that actually matters in the world? No, you can't can you? A wasted live full of parties and wasted opportunities soon to be ended in agony and gore. So now what, Mr. Party boy, what are you going to do about this? Are you going to cry and rave about it being too soon? Or maybe~ Maybe you'd like a choice. Another chance to make something of yourself? Oh, I've seem to have caught your attention. But then not dying painfully would catch anyone's attention. But never the less, I offer a choice. A choice between being the Victim or the Hero. Oh, it can still end poorly for you. Don't get me wrong, it's just less likely that you'll be eaten by a spider or be dragged to your doom by a carp. So how about it? You take me up on my offer and don't die immediately and everything will be golden for you. Sure you'll still have to find your way out of the place. And kill the Demon. Because obviously now that you are the hero you get to kill the demon and get the girl. Not that you'd want her after drugging your drinks. "

The figure gestures to his side to a table that wasn't there before. You can see several items sitting there innocently.

"I'm feeling generous today. You can take any two of these. If you're lucky or amusing enough maybe you'll see the others again someday. Most likely at the hands of some former adventurer. Who knows?"

You take a look on the items on the Table. They look innocently enough but you get the feeling there might be some deeper meaning to everything. Or not, this guy does seem like a dick enough to do something like that.

The items on the table don't look like much. That being said you'll take what seems to interest you. That being.

From the title I thought it would be playing a Cursed Mansion trying to be a Hero, which sounded hilarious.

Baseball Bat is always the most powerful weapon in a survival setting...quadruple that when it's metal+magic.

Every time I see this title, I think that it's a Disgaea quest.

i came in expecting a haunted mansion that had gained sapience wanting to become a hero. but i guess this is interesting too.

"Ah, a baseball bat, I wonder if you chose it for some prior experience or did you feel pulled to it? No matter the reason I won't criticize any of your choices. I'll still get my fill of fun as you scramble about. Don't worry too much about the beginning. As long as you think you won't have to worry about too much. I'd still pay attention to what's going on however."

The figure waves his hand as the items left on the table start to pop away. The Skull locket in particular giving you a wink as it pops out of existence. The world starts flashing and streaks of light start appearing in the sky. The figure gives a small frown.

"Oh, I thought I had just a bit more time than that. I realize that I was incredibly rude. I never did get your name. What was it again?"

"It's _"

You jerk awake from your slumber from that eerie dream. Something you ate must have been past the sell by date. Nightmares about curses and sacrifices… And you are tied up to a fucking cross. FUCK. You shift against the ropes, which thankfully give way. They must not have tied you all that tightly. Now where in the world are you? You glance around the place to get your bearings.

To the left is an absurdly massive tree. Nothing should grow that large around here. Branches spear out towards the sky attempting to blot out the sun. It's completely bare of leaves, however it's not without decoration. What looks to be thousands of ropes hang down, some weighed down by bodies of unknown age and gender. This macabre display of horror turns your stomach to look at. You honestly think you should be going not that way but, something about it makes you want to check it out anyways. You'll call that part suicidal curiosity. After all something obviously is hanging them and you don't want to meet them anytime soon. Come hang from my branches and end your sorrow. Don't die for an unworthy cause.

Straight ahead of you is a path through a darkened grove. It's nowhere near as terrifying as what your mind is labeling the Hangman's tree. After all you have a bat… Where is the fucking bat. You were promised a bat. You can't believe the annoying little prick is already reneging on his end of the deal. You can't bel~

You get hit in the back of the head by a flying bat and face plant next to a shiny mirror. That was dirty. However you do have the bat now. You give it a few swings and wonder about how comfortable it is.

Behind you looks to the be the way out. However the glowing seal actively discourages you from heading that way. You take a second to memorize what it looks like. It's got several sections surrounding what looks to be the important part. Or maybe protecting would be a good word? The symbols on the seals are actively covering each other, so you aren't really sure what they actually are. However one of them seems to be on top enough that it looks like a spider? A bug of some sort obviously but beyond that? You have no clue. It's not like you know enough to bash your head against it till you figure it out.

All you can see to the right is just empty space and a wall.

So which way do you head off towards?

The Tree has so many death flags it might as well be swimming in them and the right is too plain to be anything but a trap... so I gotta go with the still contains death flags but not as many as the other routes of the encroaching darkness.
