What If Real life animals were like Pokemon in terms of everything and can be caught in balls like tennis balls or any type of balls can catch them like a Pokeball does.
Yes, assuming they get abilities related to the type they most likely belong to and can evolve into bigger, stronger & etc version of themselves.
The Legendaries will be Nessie, Bigfoot, Unicorns and other mythological creatures with evidence of existing or having existed and folklore are in different countries & standing there like legendaries at the games. All those dinosaurs and extinct animals are fossils can be brought back by random professors and Genetically engineered animals are like Mewtwo from different science labs.
Dog, Cat and Lizards are the most likely starters. Various breeds for different regions.
Personally, I'd use a Pistol Shrimp (Most likely Water/Fire, those guys get VERY hot), a Crocodile (very strong. Water/Ground), a Gorilla (The most normal one here. Normal type/Fighting type, obviously), a Komodo Dragon (BLOOD LASERS, for Poison/Dragon), and a Rhino.
