• The site has now migrated to Xenforo 2. If you see any issues with the forum operation, please post them in the feedback thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 21, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded.

What features will go away?

  • Files
  • Polls
  • Links
  • Photos
  • Folders
  • Calendar
  • Database
  • Attachments
  • Conversations
  • Email Updates
  • Message Digest
  • Message History

Anyone have or know of a good scraping tool/script for yahoogroups? A few of the groups I've joined intend to let theirs die with yahoo but I'd like to have a personal backup of the drabbles and omakes that were mixed in conversations of yesteryear. But I don't know of a way to do it quickly and I rather not copy thousands of pages by hand.

As far as I know... you gotta copy it by hand...

Damn, yahoo was my main email for years when google decided that I want to use my gmail for anything besides email. Yeah, I did not like the whole google+ bullshit. Me having a google account now is a necessary evil in some cases.

-edit-

This is me reacting to the "for now" not the groups shutting down. I never used groups or knew that was a thing for like 14 years since I first created my email.

Yahoo was my main email from 1995 or so until 2006, when Yahoo started deleting unused email accounts, and we were checking ours so rarely that it got declared "unused".

I'm still sad about the Groups, though; there's going to be a lot of useful internet history gone that day. Had anyone been trying for a major archive/backup campaign yet?

Dear Group Moderators and Members,

Last month we notified you of the changes coming to Yahoo Groups that better align with user habits, and today we are providing an update to guide you through the next steps of the transition. Yahoo Groups is not going away - but we are making adjustments to ultimately serve you better. We are amazed at the vibrant community you've created through Yahoo Groups and we want to make sure you feel supported as we introduce these changes.

The following changes were made since our last communication:

  • Users can now only join a Yahoo Group through an invite or group request approval by the Group Moderator.
  • New Groups can't be public. They can only be private (not listed in Groups directory, membership by invitation only) or restricted (listed in Groups directory, membership requests must be approved by a Group Moderator).
  • Members must share all content via email, and can no longer upload or host new content on the Yahoo Groups website itself.

The following changes will be made on December 14, 2019:

  • Public groups will no longer exist. All existing public Groups will become restricted Groups that require Group Moderator approval to join.
  • Any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed.

If you would like to keep any of the content you've posted or stored within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 by accessing the Groups Download Manager at:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata.
Once you provide your preferred email address, we will send you a confirmation of your download request and notify you once the download is complete.

You will receive a link to a downloadable zip file via email for each of your Groups organized into a separate folder. Download time varies depending on the amount of information and file size.

If your download request is made by 11:59pm PST on Saturday, December 14, 2019, your content will not be deleted until your download is complete. We are unable to accommodate any download requests made after this deadline.

This is the final reminder to download your content. You can find additional information about the upcoming changes at:
https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/SLN31010.html.

We have worked extensively with our customer support team to develop recommendations for tools that can help you with any download issues. See help article here:

We have watched the evolution of Yahoo Groups with awe, as we grew to a community of millions with over 10 million Groups. Every day, we witness the power of community and shared passions, and our mission is to provide a platform for the strong connections people make with each other around their interests.

We thank you for being part of the Yahoo Groups community and look forward to continuing to provide ways for you to connect with one another about your shared interests and passions.

Sincerely,
The Groups Team

Oh wow I remember seeing my very first Chrono Trigger porn pic on a Yahoo Group.

IIRC it was Frog plowing Marle with a little box brother in the corner with Marle holding a tadpole implying... well you know.

I hope the standard policy for emails will keep going and that some other company will take over the email servers and addresses. Even now, Yahoo still maintains email service for failed addresses like @hotmail, rocketmail and dozens more.

Hotmail has been under the Microsoft umbrella since 1997 and is still maintained by them, you just can't open new accounts.

Damn, Yahoo was my first ever email id. I even downloaded Yahoo messenger to chat with my online friends.
