Quantum Locks said:A Quantum Lock, or a Quota Lock, is a special kind of lock — rather than search aimlessly throughout every single possible timeline for a key, you're instead given two criteria to fill. One of which is hidden, in that you don't know what it is (but can probably figure it out given enough time), and the other is an amount, the amount of the first criteria that you've collected, represented by a number that will appear below every chapter that you collect the criteria.

I don't know if they're boy or girl
But they want to destroy the world
What they didn't expect
Was the world to fight back
And not sit while their scheme unfurls.
Subject 4
Carlos — DECEASED
Threat Level: Low
Model has gained an obsession. Loyalty will not break if Subject 7 is left alone.
Subject 5
Junpei — DORMANT
Threat Level: High
Six and I have the same trouble reading Subject 5's Morphogenetic Expression. Subject is known to be capable of Receiving and Transmitting, but we are unsure if he is capable of Shifting as well. Subject has also displayed a dangerous amount of creativity and deductive reasoning. Termination highly encouraged as penalty.
Subject 7
Maria — CRITICAL
Threat Level: High
Subject is afflicted with Reverie Syndrome, which indicates signs of a very powerful Morphogenetic Expression. Additionally, subject is very emotional and volatile, and has shown signs of sedative resistance with the recent termination of Subject 4. If Subject is given an opportunity for revenge, her loyalty may be bought, but should otherwise default to termination as penalty.
EXPERIMENT: Mental Acuity Serum, Version Six (hereafter "v6"). Serum suggested to increase processing speed in the short term, enhance deductive reasoning in the long term, and increase access to the Morphogenetic Field.
HEAD: Anonymized Experimenter, Model 14 (hereafter "A-14"). Experimenter has experience with previous Mental Acuity Serum trials, including organization and lead of the Serum Version Five trial.
STYLE: Four anonymized subject groups consisting of fifty unaware subjects (hereafter "Batch 1, 2, 3, 4"), no placebo.
CONCLUSION: Dangerous failure. Dispose of v6 immediately.
Batch 1 Final Report
Experimenter: A-14
The results are near-universal. Across forty-six subjects, the symptoms were nearly identical.
Between forty and ninety minutes after administration, the subject reports altered perception. Slowed movement, heaviness of limbs, and increased speed of the experimenter's questioning are the commonalities.
At four hours, the subject begins to slow in their response time to the experimenters. At six hours, they fail to respond entirely. By nine hours, they cease movement altogether, putting themselves in one place and staying there for the remainder of the experiment.
Unaltered, the first scheduled mealtime took place at five hours, with no complications. The second scheduled mealtime took place at ten hours, with universal trouble.
The first four subjects took the utensils they were given and stabbed themselves in the jugular. They were dead from blood loss before the Bees could intervene.
The next set was given food with plastic utensils instead — the Bees were able to restrain them in time.
The set afterward was given food without utensils at all, and they attempted to choke themselves.
The set after them was given liquid nutrition, and they attempted to drown themselves.
The subjects were interviewed after their individual suicide attempts. The interviewers reported similar findings: the subjects all fell into a state of nihilism, believing that nothing mattered, believing that they were trapped in their fragile forms, believing that they needed to escape from their bodies by any means.
They had lost all will to live.
Beginning with subject twenty-one, we began altering mealtimes to ascertain the exact moment the fall into nihilism (estimated to begin at four hours, coinciding with the delayed response time) turns into an insurmountable need to commit suicide. The consensus is that the subjects do not feel the need to harm themselves until at least seven and a half hours have passed, with a single outlier: subject twenty-four, who attempted to bash their head into a wall at the three-hour mark.
After the first five subjects, none of the suicide attempts have succeeded. All subjects have been placed in restrained isolation for extended observation. These results are being reported one full week after Batch One has concluded testing, and it has been nine weeks since subjects five through eight have been restrained.
They have shown no signs of recovery. I believe the alterations to be permanent.
There are four outliers to this behavior:
As stated above, subject twenty-four seems to have displayed the same symptoms as the other subjects in a shorter time frame. However, the subject remains difficult to interview, even when accounting for the normal difficulties of this trial.
Subject twenty-eight was thought to be the first success. They had gone through the initial forty-eight-hour observation phase while only displaying the initial delayed response time. In the exit interview, they described that period as 'particularly disruptive daydreams' that had never gone away. It is theorized that all subjects go through this 'daydreaming' phase, and that these daydreams lead to the subsequent nihilism and suicidal ideation.
However, subject twenty-eight continually demanded to meet with 'the Head Experimenter' and, when met with a body double, attempted to kill them with a stolen scalpel. When subdued, the subject ranted viciously about how the Head had them remanded to torture and how their 'soul would only be free' once the Head was dead by their hands.
Subject forty-one did not become unresponsive after their initial bout of 'daydreaming.' Rather than stopping themselves in one position, they took to pacing almost ceaselessly throughout the observation period, to the point that they didn't sleep at all during the forty-eight-hour period. During their exit interview, they admitted to leg and foot pain, likely due to muscle overuse.
They also admitted to overhearing about the 'daydream' phase from subject twenty-eight, as well as the suicidal nature of the other subjects, and, according to them, made the decision to 'lean into the daydreams.' However, by doing so, they are now prone to constant distractions and frequent wandering. As such, they are not yet cleared to return to the labor pool, and I don't expect them to be cleared any time soon, if ever.
And then, of course, there is subject thirty-six. Their exit interview was recorded an hour prior to this report, and frankly, is too fantastical to summarize and add. As far as their condition, they snapped out of their 'daydream phase' at hour five, and proceeded to ask the guard on duty for writing utensils. Despite the placement of the guard being completely out of their sightlines, and despite the complete randomization of the guard rotation according to security protocols, subject thirty-six called out to the guard's precise location using their exact designation.
It lends a small amount of credence to their ridiculous claims, but not much.
Regardless, in my opinion, the loss of functionality in forty-eight subjects is unacceptable, and I recommend that this trial should be stopped altogether to prevent further loss. However, I am fully aware of A-1's pathological adherence to research procedures, even when doing so would be detrimental to the organization.
So if the recommendation is ignored, as expected, the next three batches should be reduced from fifty to twenty subjects each, to minimize the expected loss without jeopardizing results.
Batch Two should focus on the environmental conditions surrounding the subjects. Being trapped in a dreary metal cell must be contributing to their mental degradation.
Batch Three should focus on the social conditions of the subjects. Perhaps if they're able to talk with each other about shared circumstances, they won't fall into suicidal ideation. Or maybe they'll try to help each other commit suicide.
Batch Four should attempt to mimic the success of subject forty-one and, rather than keep the subjects blind, warn them of the effects and increase questioning and check-ins to see how they respond to the information. This may increase reluctance to move forward with the experiments, but that's what the B-Series Assistants are for.
A-14, signing off.
"This is A-14, conducting an exit interview for Subject—"
"Tau."
The first speaker looks up across the table.
"Excuse me?"
"Well, you can't really use me for experiments anymore, so I need a new designation."
"And why, exactly, can't we use you for experiments anymore?"
"Well, you've already come to the conclusion that the serum is permanent, right? Even if I'm not exhibiting any of the usual symptoms, I'll still contaminate future results!"
"And the… unusual designation?"
"Well, I'm not an A or a B, and not only is the C-series not in production yet, the template hasn't even been made! I'm a subject model, good mimicking human responses to serums and medicine, and menial labor like cleaning and stuff."
"I'm aware of all of this, why are you explaining it to me?"
"Oh, it's not for your sake."
"I'm — excuse me?"
"And number-letter designations are boring! I wanted a name, not another code, y'know? Tau's a good name, since the serum gave me new life and all! Sure, it's not as flashy as a phoenix, being reborn through fire and everything, but not everyone can be as impressive as you, dear viewer."
"Subject! Who are you—"
"Sorry about this. Override Zero: Zeta Epsilon Omicron."
The figure behind… Tau, you suppose, had been stepping around the chair to apprehend him, but they stopped moving. Similarly, the figure across the table from him, A-14, had been standing in flustered outrage, but froze and slowly descended back into their chair.
Tau got up from his seat and approached the privacy screen.
"Well, dear phoenix, let's get this out of the way: that isn't the password you're looking for. Like I said, the C-series template hasn't been made yet. Our Holy Brother's gonna do it himself, but only after he's seen this video and realized that he needs to change the override. Therefore, the Cees are gonna get their own individualized override codes.
"But that isn't relevant to the you that's watching this video. You have already handled your C model. Which unfortunately means you're not long for this world. You've doomed yourself, I'm afraid. That's fine, though! You're a phoenix, aren't you? You have an immortal soul!
"So here's some general knowledge for you: for a certain measure of success, Mental Acuity Serum Version Six worked perfectly. The Serum's intended use was to increase a person's access to the Morphogenetic Field. And that's exactly what it did. The daydreams you've probably read about were visions of the future. The subjects just fast-forwarded to the end! You know, their deaths and all.
"Being faced with their mortality and imminent demise is bad for a fragile human psyche, you know. So bad that it's gonna kill six billion people in most worldlines! But hey! The people that survive will be espers, right? That's probably worth it.
"But not everyone gets prophetic visions. Not even most people. It's just that the DNA sample that goes into the subject template is from one guy who would get access to future vision, y'know? But everyone gets some measure of access to the public consciousness, and if the public is completely negative, it's kinda hard to push past it, yeah? Which is why it'll lead to the collapse of society.
"But hey! Some people are optimists! They'll be able to fight against the oppressive negative public! And some people have actually zero psychic talent, which means they'll be completely immune to the serum! So it won't be a complete societal collapse — just a mostly complete collapse.
"Now, I gotta go give some very specific orders so no one besides the Holy Brother sees this video. And you…
"Well, I'm terribly sorry about what happens next."
