Well, yeah. Apparently Pokemon Sun and Moon are coming out soon, but really? I feel underwhelmed. I haven't actually beat a new pokemon game since pokemon black and even then that was mostly because I had a gameshark to cut grinding time for eggs and shit like that.

But that isn't the problem, kinda thing I outgrew the pokemon games and am weary about shelling out for another pokemon game.

I had gotten pokemon blue(beat it many times), pokemon yellow(beat it many times), pokemon silver(beat it about twice), pokemon crystal(beat it), pokemon ruby(beat it), pokemon emerald(came close to beating it but forgot about it),pokemon leaf green(beat it), pokemon pearl(beat it), pokemon platinum(beat it), pokemon heart gold(beat it), pokemon white(beat it), pokemon white 2(never got around to beating it), pokemon X(Never beat it), Pokemon whatever that Ruby remake is(haven't beat it)

The point is that is many years and basically an entire childhood I grew up with. But well, I think the pokemon games lost their touch on me. I'm pretty much tired going through the same story over and over again with only litter variations with the same formulas. I am tired of the "cool" new gimmicks that they are coming out with to make it seem like you are not playing the same game over and over again.

I am tired of this shit.

So I am likely not buying the next pokemon version that is coming out, no matter if it has a cat pokemon for a starter, no matter if it has a big cat for a legendary, no matter if it comes with a muchlax holding a mega stone.

In the words of the snakes on a plane guy...Enough is enough.

Shelling out nearly 40 dollars or more for the same game basically every damn year is no longer something I'm going to do. So my "Z-move" is no longer "shut up and take my money" but "I ain't buying another game unless there are some big changes" Something I think this new pokemon game is going to fail and deliver like all the other pokemon games before it.

Anyway, curious to see what other people think of the new games? Or if someone is going to argue for them since I can't be bothered to look them up? If it comes to that I probably should have made this thread for the rant side, but well. I'm not trying to rant here.

Well, one of the best decision made here is the removal of HMs. About damn time.

They finally did that? At least that is one of their better ideas. ^.^

Had Red, Sapphire, Pearl, White. Beat the first three, the first two multiple times. Only picked up White because all of my friends went on a Pokemon kick and I suggested we all pick up the latest gen game and give it a shot as a group. Was disinterested and uninvested since I had lost my collected Pokemon from Sapphire and Pearl, and I found Team Plasma incredibly silly. After battling the team that wanted to cover the earth in water/fire and the team that wanted to destroy and remake the universe... we have the Pokemon equivalent of PETA. No motivation, never finished it. When I put my DS down the last time, I had thought I was done with Pokemon. I didn't pick up Black or White 2, I ignored ORAS.

All of that said - I'm pretty hyped for Sun/Moon. Alola is a Pokemon region based off of my real world region, and I've already seen a bunch of nods that were fun to spot. The starters actually grabbed my attention, it looks like there's a different and interesting plot, and several of my friends and I are all talking about buying it without specifically colluding to do some big thing. I don't expect I'll get a huge amount of playtime in, and it'll be slow going. But I'm 100% down to buy a copy.

Haven't really researched it beyond a curious glance, what's the plot like? Since the plot is the main reason I have against pokemon games because they are all the fucking same.

I think it would actually have been good if they made it the actual pokemon equivalent of PETA rather than just a silly plot by a madmad trying to reshape the world or something with god dragon things, again. The conflict would have been more interesting if that was a legit movement to free the pokemon from trainers and shit.

Don't even have to bring in a legendary for it and it wouldn't be a straightforward thing to resolve by beating someone in a pokemon battle or beating a legendary and crap. But I agree, they kinda dropped the ball on team plasma.

You come to the islands to visit family, and you get a Pokemon because of semi-standard bullshit you're-10-now reasons. The big thing revealed thus far is no gyms. Now there's trials and totem Pokemon, one per island. It sounds more Zelda-like to me. Enemy team is Team Skull... but they haven't actually done anything villainous per the previews thus far - they mostly seem to dance and rap at you. Frankly, a bog standard streetgang is preferable to Team Plasma. I wasn't heavily into the previews other than to scope out some of the new Pokemon and figure out which ones were version exclusive. Once the actual full leaked copy of the game hit I chose to stop looking for things about the game online because I don't want too much spoiled for me.

Hmm, I may check it out then. The no gyms thing is rather interesting and I wonder how the replacement for them will be like.

It seems like I was wrong and this could be pretty much the change in the story that I was looking for.

There's nothing wrong with the concept of HMs exactly. They're just implemented poorly. If they changed the move mechanics so a pokemon could learn as many moves as they like, but be restricted to a chosen set of four in battle, and if they designed the routes to have less obvious broken bridges everywhere, they'd be fine.

...I still haven't played beyond gen IV...

Well, out of all starter, I like the grass this time.

usually I'll take the fire, but the last 2 generation kind of shorted in fire type starter. Greninja and Decidueye is cool, in both the design, moves and typing.

I haven't started the first trial yet, just got slowpoke, magnetite and Rowlett. I'll continue after finished work.

The prologue before first trial announced for you is long, but it has a nice charming experience that you're actually a new guy moving in and have to got used to the town first, accompanied by the nice guy & girl next door. There's actually a very nice slice of life experience here, I kid you not.

At least there's indication we'll have a nice story here, but it looks like it will be a relaxed experience, unlike Pokemon Yellow. Yes, I played it in GBC, it's a very long time ago.....

On the other hands, I've also found out Persona 5 will have free Japanese voice DLC today, yay!

Aaaand now there are articles out about the game coming to Switch, codenamed 'Stars' for now.

And people realized that the Snorlax event in game is gonna end right for the Switch direct, which is probably when they'll officially announce it if true.

Dunno for you guys, but that kinda do great wounds to the idea of buying it now for me knowing there's a third version coming.

Well, that's just mean they're coming back to the 3 version release.

I kind of wonder, though, is it Pokemon who started the tradition of two version release?

I think Pokemon made it popular and codified it, but there are a few examples of the one-game-for-the-price-of-two thing that predate it:

    Sonic III/Sonic and Knuckles
    Final Fight/Final Fight Guy
Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen/Might and Magic V: Darkside of Xeen

That's interesting. So how do they considered two for one?

I can't remember any Sonic game where you can import a character.

Btw, currently playing the full version now.

I've imported Greninja from demo, but I've to defeat two trial first. Curses!

Anyway, kinda sad to see that they are going to the three version thing again.

Sonic III/Sonic and Knuckles was in development as one game before being split into two for time/cost reasons, and the cartridges were made so you could plug one into the other and play them as one game as originally intended. You could also plug Sonic II into Sonic and Knuckles to import and play as Knuckles in the former.

Final Fight/Final Fight Guy is the closest to Pokemon, as there are just character roster and other minor differences.

Might and Magic IV/V operated something more like the Zelda Oracle games, where you complete either one, import data, complete the other, and then get access to true ending stuff.

Got Moon last week, am now 20 hours in.

    Stuff that is different:
    • No Gyms, the replacement Trials are not really Zelda-esque, but are different enough to not be gym like at all while still kind of echoing the 'puzzle to get to the gym leader, then fight the gym leader' with 'puzzle from the Trial Captain, then fight the Totem Pokemon'
    • Some of the trials are way harder than any gym I tried in the old games - Kiawe's trial can make you fight multiple times and then on completion IMMEDIATELY tosses you up against the Totem Pokemon with no time to heal. AFAIK you can't leave the trial area after starting so no going back to the Pokemon Center after every fight either.
    • On the other hand, with the Festival Park (and later on, the Poke Pelago) it's not like you'll be hurting for healing items mid trial. Festival Park is a gamble, but I ended up with a Soft Drink Shop in my first set of booths, so I have easy access to cases of milk and half-cases of water/soda/lemonade whenever I need it. The Poke Pelago allows you to churn out berries, so if you plant a bunch of the ether-equivalents and Sitrus Berries, you're never going to lack healing items.
    • The Ride Pokemon and map design give a slightly more 'Metroid-vania' feel to maps that old Pokemon games never quite managed, though it's still very watered down. I've seen a ton of areas that are clearly meant for me to come back with a different Ride Pokemon, even on the first island. Either way, I'm glad that HMs are not a thing anymore.
    • EXPSHARE IS STANDARD AND PARTY WIDE. You spend a short while playing with your party the same as all Pokemon games thus far, but before you even hit the first city, you get handed an Exp. Share, and from that point on your whole party gains XP on every fight instead of just the participants. Grinding is MUCH reduced as a result, and trying to get under-leveled Pokemon up to fighting trim is much less of a headache.
    • Plot is fairly sedate thus far - I think at this point in RSE or DPP we'd been introduced to the villainous teams and their ultimate goals of covering the land in water/sea in magma/destroying and remaking the universe- in contrast, Team Skull seems totally ineffectual, to the point where even other characters regard them as jokes, so I expect the actual villains are probably going to come out of left field or use them as unwitting catspaws.

Thus far I'm pretty happy with it.

Seems a bit more interesting then the other games lately then. Did they allow you to buy outfits for your avatar as well? Been wondering if that is only going to be a pokemon x and y type of thing.

Yeah, new outfits are a thing. Slots are shirt, pants, shoes, socks, bag, hat, glasses & hair accessory. Hair accessory might be female only: I'm playing a male character and haven't seen a single one at the 4 fashion shops this far. Skin tone is set at char gen, but your hair color, style, and eye color can be changed at the first city.

My one complaint about the extra clothes is about the standard color palette they use for 'green tanktop', 'blue tanktop' etc. It's very limited this far, and as a result doesn't match with some of the other items you would expect it to. The green is a kind of pastel green, so you can't wear the green camo pants with the green tank, since the camo pants have actual forest green in them. I've yet to find a non-black shirt that goes with the camo shorts. Or for that matter, anything piece of dark clothing that isn't navy blue or black.

Clothing is actually the most expensive item in the game this far. A leather bag is in excess of 375,000.

Well, people need something to do with their extra cash I guess. Glad they came back with the avatar customization though. Was a bit worried since it wasn't in the new Ruby version. At least from what I could tell and I gotten far on that. May actually pick it up for Christmas just to see it for myself since they are finally trying to make things at least a bit different.

But I'm wondering if I should wait for the third version if that is going to be a thing. >.>

Probably would get Sun if I do.

    65 hours in now.

Main plot is not done, but I'm about to head to the Victory Road equivalent, so I'm almost done with it. Pretty well done stuff - I actually like how most of the characters have developed. I even have some grudging respect for Gladion, despite him still being an overdramatic edgelord.

Poke Pelago feels kinda like Farmville: Pokemon edition, but it's super useful for getting a ton of berries, catching Pokemon you can't be fucked to track down, and training Pokemon you can't be fucked to include in your party. I can also see it's kind of a replacement for a place to find resources and money postgame once all the battles are over - it's a pity that it's designed around being a time-gated management minigame instead of being active play stuff like Diamond/Pearl's Underground.

Sun seems to be the smart choice. There's a fuckton of Ghost and Dark types in Alola, which means Psychic types are hosed - the version exclusive ape in Moon is Psychic. Lyranroc's Midday Form (Sun exclusive) is better than his Midnight Form (Moon exclusive). The Moon Legendary is Ghost/Psychic and takes 4x damage from Ghost and Dark. You also get friggin Buzzwole. Also, you don't need to deal with the goofy 12-hour offset playtime thing.

If you do knuckle under and get it, try to see if the free gift Munchlax is still available. You get an Amulet Coin pretty early into the second island, and Happy Hour and Amulet Coin stack to give you quad monies on trainer battles. I'm just into my first steps down the Victory Road equivalent and I'm at over $800k after having dumped a few hundred thousand into buying all the TM's I can get my grubby hands on, as well as a bunch of unnecessary fashion shit.

Don't worry, you'll clock in more hours after the main story done.

There's a lot of after main story content in this one, especially if you played competitively. I'm not, by the way. I just like playing my ghostly owl. And the cutest character for me is actually the ghost specialist.

Looks like I'm Ghost lover in this game.

I've always been a Ghost fan - from the original 151 Haunter was my favorite, and from Gen III onward, Sableye has remained my favorite overall. I'm actually suffering from Ghost overload now - I can actually stack my team with nothing but Ghosts, but Alola has so many Dark and Ghost types, and mons that can learn out of type Dark moves that I get my shit wrecked when I do. After trying it for a bit, I've eased back and right now I've got Lunala, Sableye and Decidueye as my only Ghosts.

Go on, play that mono-ghost team. You know you want to. It can't possibly be worse than mono-grass in HG/SS.

Stuff like that is how you force yourself to think and work for your wins rather than knocking everything down through OHKO elemental rock-paper-scissors all the time.

I did try for a bit - had a 5/6 Ghost team of Decidueye, Pallosand, Mimikyu, Sableye, Marowak & Snorlax. It's not the sheer difficulty that stops me so much as the ancillary reasons.

I have a really hard time ditching Snorlax. Happy Hour + Hold Back is just too useful (not powerful) for me to ditch. I don't want to bother with the hassle of continually cycling False Swipe/Shadow Claw on my Decidueye via TM, and Happy Hour is such a rare move I literally can't get it on anything else. I'd halve my money gain by ditching him, and while battle difficulty is one thing, I want the free cash to buy whatever fashion junk I want.

And it's kind of stupid sentimentality, but I can't quite bring myself to NOT have the Sableye/Metagross tagteam that I've been pining for post-Pearl. It's not my old team, but it echoes it, even if it's utility is much reduced.

Honestly, I've always made my teams combination to always have water-fire-grass. And fill the rest with any Pokemon I liked from the game.

As it happen, Alolan Raichu now become permanent member of my team. After Blaziken, Greninja and Decidueye.

Kinda gave in and got pokemon sun... still at the beginning since I'm resetting to get Adamant nature for my owl starter.

Honestly that was a tough choice this time. Even though fire kitteh apparently has shitty typing when fully evolved with a shitty move pool and stats, it was a close contender.

But I went with the grass.

I'll get the other two by catching shitty volpex and trading them for the starters while I try and catch a modest Volplex later on.

Ice/Fairy type. Fuck you dragons, rip and tear your guts!

Though, sadly I would need to see if they still have the wonder trade thingy where you can just put a pokemon up for trade, specifying the one you want, and then trading for it.

I would also need to see all the starters before hand though, but I think that wouldn't be an issue.

It would be easier if I renewed my pokemon bank for this year unlike last one. Or hell, had a powersave action replay. But eh, I spent enough already buying this and Shin Megamei Tensei 4: Apocalypse and buying all the DLC for it.

    -edit-

No, I don't play pokemon competitively. That generally ended up stupid from my experience.

Same as I do. You really need to spend too much time and effort to have qualifying legit pokemon team for that.

Me, I prefer to travel around the pokemon world with my favorite pokemon, despite their definitely shitty nature, IV and EV.

The nature thing is more of a habit from me. From when I actually played semi competitively and did nuzlock challenges on my old pokemon games that had the nature thing. Some of them don't because their old. Though with nuzlock, my starter was the only one I ever reset and got the right nature for...

Never really bother much with IV or EV farming because they take took long. Well, I did the EVs on pokemon X because they were easy as hell to train there. I have no idea if that feature made it into pokemon Sun though.

Honestly I kinda miss the old days since in pokemon blue I was able to beat the entire game with just my blastoise.
