Chapter One - Introduction to the Pentacle
At twenty, I already had a diploma or two under my name and was working on a third as I tried to find out more about the Supernatural while keeping myself away from any permanent entanglements with it.
Despite being able to go to a college dorm, I preferred to stay in a townhouse my Mother owned close to the University Campus where I studied. This University Campus was in Bangor, Maine, and was a branch of a more prestigious Ivy League establishment.
There, I can devote myself to my studies and my relations with my mundane friends and contacts, and explore just what my Awakening meant.
Humanity had a potential beyond what it currently was; that much was plain. In this world, the species was both saved and damned, trapped by The Lie.
Unlike my origin world, the so-called Nasuverse, this world is a prison; no, Reality is a prison, and all we're doing is rattling the cage.
Sandy Blond Kid told me that through my telepathic link.
Of course, he only began talking with me after being tricked into a 'date' with Ritsuka Fujimaru, the Master of CHALDEA, who charmed him using words and behavior memorized from the better Yaoi/BL manga (yes, the Ritsuka I knew and he encountered was male), ending with them both sitting down and having a nice dinner with some hot chocolate with a nice mixture of mundane sedatives for Sandy Blond Kid.
He did not learn the required 'Arcana' that would allow him to sense tranquilizers or feel their effect on the body, and now the result was that he wound up in Novum Chaldea's Brig being interrogated by Goredolf and several Servants, including a very angry Archer Gilgamesh, mad at having to be resummoned.
What were the Arcana, one must ask? Well…
You see, according to us, the Awakened, Reality is divided into ten areas of elemental principle: Prime, Forces, Fate, Time, Life, Spirit, Mind, Space, Death, and Matter. Our knowledge of each Arcanum, plus the deep symbols of Supernal Truth, allows us to draw power from the corresponding Realm through the Abyss that divides it from the Fallen World.
Yes, I somehow ended up in a world - No, metaphysical setting - where the claims of Gnostics mixed with some Platonism were true. I was not sure how to feel about that, considering how many magical theories were rendered false in this world. What I know is that while waiting for the various Mage Orders (yes, plural!) to contact me, Sandy Blond Kid was my main source of information.
It helped that even after being put in restraints, Sandy Blond Kid still had a crush on the Master of CHALDEA.
Anyway, I was in my private study, in my new birth parents' townhouse, juggling my studies and listening to Sandy Blond Kid's advice. I made sure that the security systems were running and even figured out how to ward the townhouse against hostile spells and curses without the help of Sandy Blond Kid.
Also, as I not only had Prime but also Forces and Fate as the Arcana I started with, I was able to see not just the flow of Magic but also physical forces such as kinetic energy, electromagnetism, and the flow of heat throughout my surroundings.
Be warned, the Sandy Blond Kid spoke, Every Mage gets their power through a Path, attuned to a specific Watchtower in the Supernal Realms, and each Path has an Inferior Arcanum that those who walk them are weak towards - Those who are of the Obrimos Path, who signed their names on the Watchtower of the Golden Key, find it harder to learn how to use Death.
So it was harder to learn Necromancy and Magic that dealt with Death in general. This was a weak spot.
Suddenly, my doorbell rang. I looked at the monitor with the CCTV feed on it and saw… Caenis? No, Caeneus, the male form granted to him by Posiedon; Caeneus was originally born as a woman, Caenis, then… violated by Posiedon, who thought that a wish would make it better. They then wished to be an invincible man who could never be hurt again.
"Oi!" he said in a loud, raucous, undeniably masculine tone; he was slightly taller than his female form, but the smooth tanned skin, platinum blond hair, and sharp blue eyes were the same as I remembered, "I heard you got swapped here too! Let me in… Ex-Master!"
I ran for the door as fast as possible - This was my Caenis, or rather, Caeneus; the one I knew from the Olympus Lostbelt, where the Master of CHALDEA had bested me before I was betrayed by one of my close friends.
Letting him in, I said, almost bashfully, "I'm happy you're here too, Caeneus."
Then I realized, "Wait, did someone get swapped with you, too?"
He wiped his sneakers on the rug behind my front door, patted down his large jersey, the black shirt underneath, and his baggy pants for dust, then answered, "Yes, oh so very much yes. Been out of contact with that prick, though, but not before he told me you were reincarnated too, on the other side of America, even!"
I saw his face scrunch up to a frown as he gave the reason he had to come here, the reason I had already guessed.
"By the way, I'm here to recruit you; the local Mages are antsy that the Seers - The followers of The Lie - may get to you first. So I have to ask: how much do you know? About all this?"
What true Magus wouldn't resist the opportunity to show off how much they know? And I still think of myself as a 'Nasuverse' Magus at this point. Letting him sit on the living room chair as I closed the door and redid the crude wards I set, I kept standing as I gave a mini-lecture:
"More than twenty years of life confirm that I was reborn in a universe with a completely different metaphysical and cosmological structure, or, as I've begun to suspect, multiple different metaphysical and cosmological structures - What you may call 'Magic Systems' - all overlapping together," I began narrating what I found out. "There are multiple types of 'Supernatural Energy' here, one of them being 'Essence', the energy of Ephemeral Beings such as Spirits and Ghosts, while the other, which Mages wield, is Mana, which bears only a passing resemblance to Mana and Od from the so-called Nasuverse - Essence is closer to that, especially Od, than Mana from this world."
I then continued, pacing the living room in front of the door as I followed up with the words, "Magic Circuits do not exist; here, being a Mage requires seeing through The Lie, then propelling your soul across some sort of… Anti-Reality?, then glimpsing a realm that is adjacent to The Root, a realm of higher concepts that store the deeper meanings of objects and concepts."
Caeneus nodded, then said, "The Supernal Realms, or Realm - The old men keep debating this, as well as the existence of Atlantis. But continue; surely you grasp the biggest difference between this universe and ours, right?"
I can only say, "Yes, Caeneus; this universe isn't slated for salvation - There is no Age of Will here, as The Lie wants to keep Humanity in its prison, unknowing and unbelieving of Supernal Truth, the prospect of anything better, and Awakening. And I'd even wager that the Supernatural is more actively malicious here than it is in the so-called Nasuverse."
This was confirmed with a sharp nod and the words, "It is. Imagine the worst stereotypes of the Clock Tower from online fandom communities and dial them up by eleven, and you get our heroes, the ones who want Humans to Awaken and break the metaphysical prison of tyranny and control that is the current Reality. Now imagine something worse than that; an entire organization of Beryls and Doumans mixed with your standard ultra-rich f-c--r who also has Magic Beyond True Magic, entitlement up the wazoo, and all of them want to keep Humanity in their place to please the literal symbols of Cosmic Tyranny."
I arched an eyebrow at the very thought, and said to Caeneus, "You are recruiting for an organization as extreme as the Crypters - Minus Beryl - plus my father combined, because the alternative is far worse?"
On the one hand, I wanted my days as an extremist, utopian sort of Magi to be over; the Master of CHALDEA did defeat me and, by extension, my vision. On the other hand… twisted as this second chance may be, it was still a valid second chance.
I double-checked with Sandy Blond Kid first, though; despite his' acting like this was all his personal power/romance fantasy, he did know this new Magic System better than I did.
Yes, Brodime, everything your love interest said is true, Sandy Blond Kid said. The metaphysical swapping not only boosted my power by removing that dimension of Anti-Reality, The Abyss, as a factor affecting my spells, but it also got me away from the Pentacle, which I am technically a member of, but also the Seers of the Throne, the foe.
I silently nodded, then spoke to Caeneus, "All right, I'm in. Where can I meet them?"
He smiled, "Well, the higher-ups among the Silver Ladder - They're most like the Clock Tower for good or ill; you'll like them - Have issued a safe-conduct for both of us. We are to meet them at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. You okay with boarding up your house for a few days?"
Arching another eyebrow, I nodded before saying, "I suppose the safe-conduct means my house won't be touched while I am away, by the Pentacle or the Seers, right?"
Caeneus nodded, then said, "Yes, Ex-Master. I have the rotes - Condensed spells tied to one's real-life skills - to ensure that this place is guarded and maintained by Spirits for the time we'll be away. That said, you only have time to arrange an alibi and have a bite to eat before we leave; the Pentacle wants to see you as soon as possible."
He muttered, "Good thing I joined them before I appeared in that damn videogame…"
I froze at that; that videogame, Fate Grand Order - Why was the information in it so accurate, even though it was a work of fiction here?
Was Kinoko Nasu a Mage?
Shaking my head, I decided to let that thought pass, and instead prepare for the trip to MIT…
----------
A few days later, more illusions fell from my eyes.
I thought that the Clock Tower was special for having entire spaces larger on the inside than they are on the outside, supported by mental interference fields that prevent Nonmagi from noticing what's going on here. I had also subconsciously assumed, despite what I knew now, that America was not able to support anything comparable to the Clock Tower.
One moment, Caeneus and I were in Massachusetts Institute of Technology's 'Infinite Corridor', the covered hallway that ran through the main buildings of the campus. Then we passed through a door that Caeneus called 'an Iris', and entered what can be described as a pocket dimension and a fragment of frozen time.
It was a mirror image of the MIT Campus, with copies of the green lawns and modernist-style buildings centered around the Great Dome of Building 10. Here, only the Awakened or 'Sleepwalkers', those who have seen the power of the Supernatural but not accessed the Supernal, may walk.
Other types of Supernatural Creature are counted as 'Sleepwalkers' in our arrogance, Sandy Blond Kind interjected, more solemn than he had ever been. Despite their apathy and lack of care for their fellow Humans, your Clock Tower does not arrogantly dismiss the power of other Supernaturals, nor assume they are automatically metaphysically better. Someone like Goredolf, who spared me, would never have gotten to a high position in the Pentacle.
"Huh," Caeneus, now wearing a darker hoodie and light tan jeans, said, "My own companion is saying your 'Sandy Blond Kid' is admitting that something from our universe is superior to this one's Mage Society for once."
He then led me towards the Great Dome, where my new Mage Sight could detect five bright sources of Magical Power.
Five Soulstones, Sandy Blond Kid said in my head. Each from a Master Mage who specialized in each of the Five Paths. A pale imitation of your Spiritual Tomb of Albion, but more than three dozen structures like these exist in this world, so it all balances out. Kirschtachia Wodime, I… I am starting to regret forcing you into my world; being in yours is a selfish wish.
I thought back, You can make up for it by introducing yourself. And guarding the Master of CHALDEA against Marisbury and his scheme. Can you do that?
The surge of warmth and enthusiasm can be felt through our emotional link as Sandy Blond Kid introduced himself as:
Daniel! My name is Daniel Palaiologos...
