• An addendum to Rule 3 regarding fan-translated works of things such as Web Novels has been made. Please see here for details.
  • We've issued a clarification on our policy on AI-generated work.
  • QuestionableQuesting has new Moderator positions. To submit your application, please see this thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

As QuestionableQuesting continues to grow, so does the activity on the site- and with it, the number of reports.
As such, we are once again opening moderator applications to those who enjoy suffering wish to help the site function.

So if you want to apply to be a part of QQ's moderation staff, your application is welcome.
In order to apply, please submit a PM/conversation to @ultima333 answering the following questions:

1) What times are you active on the forum? (in GMT)

2) Do you feel you are familiar with the QQ community?

3) Why do you feel you will make a good moderator?

4) What do you think proper conduct is for a moderator?

5) What do you think the purpose of a moderator is?

6) In one paragraph, please explain what the purpose of one of the rules is on this site and when it'd be appropriate/inappropriate to apply it.

Those applications will then be forwarded to the rest of the current moderation team, where they'll discuss the submissions and who to take in as new moderators. This will take time, so please be patient once you've sent in your application.

Good luck to all those applying. I would try to apply myself, but I am admittedly bias and cannot promise that wouldn't affect my judgement, not to mention my lack of technical skill. Also, I only lurked in the creative writings side of thing, with even less sign of existence in the general thread.

lol, I'm looking forward to reading about treble's attempts to become a mod here.

That assume someone is chaotic enough to tell him about this. I have enough trust in my fellow QQer's relative sanity to not do that.

- Always.

2) Do you feel you are familiar with the QQ community?

- Yeah, I am familiar how deviant people here are, including me.

3) Why do you feel you will make a good moderator?

- Because I will be giving bans like there's no tomorrow.

4) What do you think proper conduct is for a moderator?

- Lord thy status

5) What do you think the purpose of a moderator is?

- Talk shit, hit ban if people talked back.

- Necromancy. To prevent zombies from rising. I hate them for giving me hope (though I've necro'ed some threads accidentally.)

On a serious note, good luck to those people willing to sacrifice a portion of their time to help this site. Kudos to all of you.

Would it be worth asking now the degree of time spent you're expecting someone to put in as a mod?

For example I could apply (and probably fail), but I'm not sure whether my personal timetable would allow me to take up being a mod. Might at least cut down on number of wasted submissions.

Also, any existing mods. Could you describe what you generally wind up doing as mods? I assume its mostly responding to report tickets, and otherwise keeping an eye out for stuff, but I'm curious to hear it described from your perspectives.

I typically put in 15-30 min per day in moderation activities, though sometimes it spikes as need arises.
Some days I put in no time, some I put in a bunch.

As far as what moderator duties are, there are two main duties the line staff do (though, this is not everything):
-Approve/Deny first posts
-Tackle report tickets

There is also collabing with other mods/admins when it comes to policy or approach.
There is also answering questions from users.

Cool, I figured that was the extent of it but that's less time than I had anticipated tbh.

So there is a report queue

Reports are generated when someone makes a "report" and we look at what the complaint was and what was posted… from there we do one or more of these things;
-Leave it for someone else, either because we are busy, biased, unsure, or don't have the tools to resolve the issue.
-Ask other staff for input; example "Complaint is rule 8 but looks like a nothingburger to me, thoughts?"
-Deep dive the thread (if it's a whole chain of issues) and comment findings/link other relevant reports
-Resolve it; if a post gets a warning it will automatically resolve the report. If the resolution doesn't involve a warning, like when we still had to remove polls, then we manually acknowledge that the report is "done" and resolved.
-Reject it; Oh look another "necro" that isn't a necro. Or "just because the reporter can't debate doesn't mean the other guys post is rule 8"

We have some good laughs behind the curtain and some days we also shake our heads and ask "why? Just why?"

Some days I spend no time on mod duties, some days I'll spend 1-2 hours (spread throughout the day), especially if I'm trying to personalise a response instead of a stamped out answer. (Like this took most of an hour to type and edit so I don't give too much away 😅)
The time zone question is there so we can try and have at least one mod on forum 24/7 (I don't have a set schedule irl so I'm floating when I'm online)

Hey, I'm stuck on mobile, so I figured I'd ask for any applicants who suffer as I do, would being stuck on mobile limit or complicate what a moderator is capable of?

Did someone quit or something?
Nope, as the forum grows, the amount of mod work that needs doing increases, and thus this current process.

I don't believe you would be unable to perform mod duties using only mobile, though sometimes you will need to post longform messages or similar, so mobile might not be the best fit (then again, I'm terrible at using mobile, so maybe that is easily doable).

I'm on mobile like 99% of the time. Some things are easier on desktop, but afaik all the mod tools work on mobile.

Hah, being a mod means remembering exact wording of the Rules alongside it's spirit. Goodspeed, whoever the new mods going to be.

Then big kudos to whoever work on this forum engine, since Xenforo forums tend to be bad with this.
That's reminds me that UI here is better than on SV and SB, even if you use similar theme.

Ah yes, the QQ singularity is growing !

For how long the applications will stay open ? I am willing to apply but I need to think upon it and end my week of work to be able to put together something good by being well rested !

nah the exact wording is on the rules page. It's remembering what isn't written thats hard 😅

No data available, I'd guess a week or two. Depends on how many valid candidates we manage to scrape from the barrel.

The only people fit for mod positions are those who don't want the position. And I don't want it.

Do you think this is going to work, guys?

"Instructions unclear, sacred rights not observed… purge the heretic, purge the heretic" … 🤣 though honestly you wouldn't be the lowest post count we got 🤔 … not that post count is a deciding factor exactly but one's posts are one method by which we view their history.

I mean, I want the position; but I know I'm so unqualified, the list of people less so than me is shorter than a gorilla's happiness sausage.

Crazy to think that 11 years ago I signed up to this site as Member #1638

And now here we are, all these years later, with over 130,000 members.

Appreciate our current mods and admins with all my heart and those who join them off of this have my gratitude as well!
