Color me interested. While I feel like you could use a little more description to fill out the details, the main core of this story is definitely a good one. I have yet to see this kinda take on Air Nomad survivors, and honestly, can't wait to see how it develops.
She's an Air Nomad now. Why not give her a name like one?
Doyalistly, it's probably for easy recognition. True, a small change to Tania as mentioned or Tenya, a known Asian name, could work, but considering a baby was named Hope in otl, I don't find it that far out there.
Watsonianly, one could just point out how spiritual the Air Nomads are, and so when she was born, they just Felt that her name should be Tanya.
G: If you'll note, Tanya and Avi have already created an advanced airbending technique: gasbending. Which means they can selectively bend different gasses in different directions simultaneously.
Funny how when they first did that Tanya was thinking, "This could be used to help in mining." Only for war to happen, and they had to use it to kill dozens at a time. It's literally what happened with dynamite. History repeats.
Good news! Airbenders aren't generally raised by their parents anyway!
Can't be orphaned if your culture practices communal child-rearing.
Tanya should have the nomads under her command ditch the bright orange monk robes and get army camouflage style clothes for better hiding in the wilderness or at least earth kingdom clothes so the fire nation won't pick them out in a crowd.
You can do both. Be funny if camouflage (not just forest green, but also desert beige-brown and mountain snow white and gray) comes to be associated with the battle-hardened sect of Air Nomads. After all, you can't actually
see the wind.
this looks like a lot of fun! I love the plan here, a guerilla war really is the only viable method for Tanya and the Air Remnants
Come out of nowhere, hit hard and fast, take what you can, break what you can't, and leave without a trace. The fact they can approach via air means that, so long as no one sees where they came from or where they went, there's no way to really track them except to map their patterns, and even that can be avoided by zig-zagging up and down.
When aang comes along in a hundred years or so the air nomads are going to be completely alien to him compared to what they where before the war.
No more bald pacifists monks in bright orange clothes, with Tanya as there leader the air nomads will be considered some of the most bloodthirsty people around
I wouldn't say "bloodthirsty" so much as generationally traumatized with a violent reaction towards threats. Plus, I could see a few old souls trying to hold on to their old traditions where they can. Not so much to go against the new grain that they need to survive, but just doing their level best to remember what they had. Almost like a mourning of the identity they lost, because circumstances demanded they step back from the incense and staffs and take up the sword and shield.
they probably won't even be vegetarians anymore when aang shows up.
To be fair, in a lot of cases, vegetarianism is a luxury. When you're out in the dead of winter in one of the coldest places people can live and have to stay there for potentially months to hide away from the Fire Nation fleet, there's barely going to be plants, let alone edible vegetables.
So yes, sorry penguin-seals, but it's just the circle of life.
After all, is the lion-bear evil for eating the antelope-squirrel?
Just realised that the air nomads divided their four main temples into two for females and two for males. So Tanya now had an all female force of guirella fighters after all the men got killed by the fire nation.
Oh, I almost didn't realize that as well. Something like 99% of their current force is female, and even after picking up stragglers and survivors, they're not going to rebalance that very quickly at all.
So not only are they on the path to becoming sky pirate-esque, Not!Mongol raiders with a tragic cultural history and inherited PTSD, they're going to become Amazonian by necessity.
The preservation of their people requires them being careful with their last few men until they get another generation. We're looking at around 20 years of them fielding almost only women from their numbers alongside whoever they recruit from the Earth amd Water folks. That's going to solidify, culturally speaking.
