I've been considering doing a read along thread for High school DxD. However, considering it is a copyrighted light novel I was wondering how much text can actually be shared from it until it starts to violate rule 3?

I could be wrong but… that sounds like a copyright lawsuit waiting to happen.

So probably none till an admin weighs in on this and you explain your idea a little more…

So people have done threads where they read like, Worm which is a freely available story. While obviously I can't copy paste the entirety of a book here it's not like showing off the occasional bit of text here and there is a massive copyright issue, or at least that is my assumption.

You could do it like the MCU/MHA reaction story on AO3, where the author just gives timestamps. Obviously you would have to do it differently but that could be a good starting point

I think if it's quoting paragraphs here and there with page/time stamps.... It should be fine?

I'll go ahead and point out the obvious: look up Fair Use rules and stick to that. If you have trouble finding/interpreting what's applicable, any library probably has standard resources on hand.

Honestly, just quoting a paragraph or three should be fine.

If you want hard numbers though, I'd say, like... maybe 1/3rd of the chapter, each chapter? At most?

Like, there's clearly a grey area between "literally just copy/pasting the entire chapter" and "no content from it all all no matter what", with the former being 100% bad and the latter being completely unreasonable, but it all boils down to how much people feel is 'okay'. Which can be very subjective.

This, basically. A few paragraphs and 'timestamps' for certain parts should be fine.
