• The site has now migrated to Xenforo 2. If you see any issues with the forum operation, please post them in the feedback thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Hi.

Pertaining to the news banner about spam catching mail. I just moved to a new provider, and had to contact support to unblock the QQ IP from their filters. They gave the following advice:

We aggressively rate limit certain classes of sending servers, especially those that match certain criteria (e.g. very recently signed up domain names) to stem the large number of spam we see from them, and this is what appears to have happened here.
In this case, the sending server "162.0.234.37" (guiling.questionablequesting.com) has been in multiple RBL listing (eg: https://rbl.metunet.com/). You can contact the admin of the server to get themselves removed from that listing.

Thought I pass it on. You probably already know about it, but I thought it couldn't hurt.

Indeed, this is a known issue.

The blocklist providers are being annoying about delisting, or indeed telling us anything about what's gotten us onto blocklists. I have some next steps in mind for reconfiguring the mail server, but they're waiting on the XF 2 upgrade.

is this the correct place for more information?
i saw the banner for Microsoft products, i tried switching to protonmail but it was likewise blocked (At least i think so, i never got the confirmation email) so i had to switch back a google email...
how to know if the email provider has blocked QQ?

Well, I can answer that Fastmail has unblocked QQs IP centrally, and I receive their mail.

Protonmail seems to have the same problem. I switched to an account there recently, but my confirmation email never arrived even when I clicked the link to resend it, so I had to reset my email address here back to gmail.
(Similar account confirmation for Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity worked fine, though.)

EDIT: Adding admin@questionablequesting.com to the spam whitelist in Protonmail didn't let the message through. I've submitted a support form on their website describing the problem.

I got a response from Protonmail; they said that the message was blocked by an external spam blacklist that you would need to get yourselves removed from:

Protonmail support said:
We tried to look into this further and we can see that we have blocked incoming messages from this sender due to very high spam scores.
Their sending IP address is on the spamhaus blacklist:
https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist:162.0.234.37&run=toolpage

They should try to get delisted from Spamhaus in order to improve deliverability.

Yes, I've tried going through the Spamhaus removal process twice, and each time we're back on it within hours with no explanation.

I suspect I need to change something more fundamental about how we do E-mail, and most of the obvious options require diving deeper into the forum software itself. This is hard, because our current XF 1.5 is more than a year past its final end-of-life, and no one is doing development or support for it anymore. So I am currently planning to tackle this issue again after we finish the (currently ongoing) XF 2 upgrade process.

I probably should have read this earlier whoops. Just did it this week and still a thing with Protonmail.
