How powerful can a human be compared to a demon? Do the demons have all the cards or is it more equal? How much of a threat are they to each other?

A normal human is nothing to a demon or angel. They need demonic power, a Magi who studies the runes of the Lost God can wield spells but I don't think they get physical enhancements and forms like the demons do.

I guess I'm asking because if angels or demons are too powerful, they'll just rule over humanity. they need something to hold them back. Something that forces them to negotiate deals with humanity and try to avoid a direct conflict with them.

You could always go with the numbers thing. maybe Angel and Demons are a set number and can't have children so they have to be careful when picking their battles because any losses are irreplaceable.

True. One thing could be that magic items by magi and spells are abhorrent to them. They are the light of God. Which is anatheme to the demons, and demons focus too much. They aren't great at world conquering as they tend to settle into territories and build around them

That is a thought. Demons and angels are immortal but they can be banished and take a long time to return and finding the right vessel is a task.

Maybe it causes the land they claim hold over to fall into disarray and by the time they get back they have to regain control over it making death a even more painful process.

If you want a fun adventure, maybe have some thrill seekers or desperate thieves breaking into a exclusion zone that was formally a demon lords land, fighting the over grown wild life and out of control mutations to find magic artifacts and riches hidden within.

So the corruption is left to run wild and that is a interesting thought, people going into hazard zones for goodies as a trade market.

You could tie it in with the stronger the demon, the longer it takes for them to get back. With the strongest demons taking decades or even hundreds of years to fully form back and the weaker ones taking a few years.

I like, so the most ancient powerful ones take a long while to return.

Would especially give an incentive for the stronger ones to do most of their fighting and dirty work through proxies, and by extension humans. Which is also a convenient reason for why they make so many deals with humans to begin with. Nice the world building is starting to connect and come full circle.
