What I'm thinking is that since he see's Amy has a celebrity and a hero it causes him to overlook a lot of her nastier side, and justify a lot of the more horrible things she's doing. really emphasize that its not really a friendship, but two people taking advantage of the other for their own reasons. For Greg its too feel important and for Amy its to justify what she's doing.

Well in the original story, one of Greg's defining traits was his loneliness and a lot of his resentment was in how he didn't know how to fix that. in this one I would really show that insecurity and loneliness and how it pushes him to stay quite when he gets uncomfortable or ignore certain red flags.
