In general adding more lore to magic. Connecting pieces of history, weaving together expansions and reducing the scifi scale of the later expansions, I could share with you if you like just one aspect of the lore we are doing
The religion of the light, the light being a cosmic force of light and creation, in the modern day grew from a dragon cult to the red dragon queen of life, who here is aspected to the light, fusing with another cult that grew from celestial beings called the Naru visting a human and making her a prophet.
This has resulted in the two faiths merging into the modern light faith where the dragon aspect of life is seen as a avatar of the light and revered as a holy figure. They would push out the prior religions of the druid and shamans who revered the wild gods and elementals
That sounds pretty cool. Kind of reminds me a bit on the history of Christianity actually where it incorporated not just Jewish folklore, but also Babylonian and Assyrian idea's and reinterpreted it into their own religion. Lilith, the demon from the bible had her start as a Asseryian myth about this lady with birds feet and wings that would steal away children and try to seduce men through their dreams.
They, since Lilith a general term for demons and succubus rather than a singular figure, was actually referenced in the epic of Gilgamesh a couple times. Lots of world building opportunities like that, with different past legends and ideas being recycled and reused in different interpretations.
In this case the red dragon aspect is a super powerful magic dragon blessed by the titans who made the first dragons from proto dragons who evolved from elementals and we took that and said she has light magic and her scarlet wyrm cult was a foundational ingreidment to the forming of the modern light cult
She is the protector and healer of all life on the planet and her goals are watching over the people of the world. See, this is something me and my friend need to talk about as blizzard has these demigod dragons who could have massive influence over politics and history and they don't really do things unless plot says so
Well Warcraft is a video game after all, too many developers think having a powerful figure infringe upon a character autonomy makes for a worse game when honestly one of favorite parts of games like Skyrim and Fallout is playing politic's with these super powerful figures.
You have no idea how fucking stuffed the lore is. I haven't even gotten to the crazy shit
in order
Elves are mutated trolls who drank and bathed in a well of arcane magic
Demons are alien civilizations who were transformed by the dark power of chaos magic in the Fell and turned into a army by a fallen titan, one of the order gods that shaped Azeroth the planet in ancient times
Goblins are super smart because they snort crystal drugs
The undead plague of warcraft three is caused partly by a orc shaman imprisoned in a glacier inside a suit of necromatic armor forged by the aftermentioned intergaletic space demons
And then there is the city of werewolves who wear top hats
I actually know a little bit about the aforementioned Undead plague, how the suit of armor was alive and need another host to take over and start conquering the world. So it slowly manipulated and broken down a hero name Arthus, who goes a little crazy after the horrible shit he has to do to stop the undead plague and being rejected by his elven waifu.
