You you know how I mentioned the vampires, Well most of them were mindless, practically zombies that just went around attacking anything at night, but some of them retained their minds and even fewer of them could actually be in the sunlight for short bursts of time without dying. And over time these daylight vampire slowly started rebuilding society.
A society that was terrified of Robert. The guy who would go house by house staking vampires he found while they slept in their coffins or bed, not knowing some of them were sentient, and over time he became their boogy man. the monster. the vampire. You get it? lol. He became the legend for a whole new civilization.
And when they captured him, he took suicide pills rather then let them kill him in the end acknowledging no matter what he said he couldn't fit in with their society.
Anyway there was a whole subplot with a vampiress who was sent to spy on him that was chosen because Robert had killed her husband and she was okay with a suicide mission but also because she looked similar to Robert's dead wife which was a recurring flashback character for him, only for the vampiress to fall in love with and forgive him and try to help him escape. Which failed because Robert refused to abandon her.
His daughter, along with his wife, actually did become a vampire. He ended up killing them both after they rose from their grave and tried to eat him. It was a pretty horrific scene because he couldn't bring himself to do it the first night, so for a like a couple weeks the two of them would specifically bang on the doors to his house since even the dumber vampires retained some of their memories.
Sex vampire apocalypse here? Dad with vampire daughter and wife and femboy son returned to claim him? Wanting him to join them in taking over the city?
But really the idea I had while reading the book was a family of survivors trapped inside this massive underground bunker built by a government or corporation, no way in, no way out. And in between exploring this place, trying to figure out what the virus is outside, you have the family slowly being corrupted by an unseen force.
Do go on and your talking of the vampire wife and daughter reminds me of the Vamprie War book about how this great half vampire monster slayer lost his family and is hellbent on revenge. A tale told in three parts. Him at the end of the story captured by vampires having failed to stop them. His past as he became a vampire hunter and his present before being captured where he went on his quest of revenge.
My idea was you had the mom and her three kids. Two older daughter's and a younger son who's bit of a black sheep for the family. And you have the father who divorced his original wife and brought in a younger trophy wife and her kids. Now the two families are stuck together despite some serious lingering tensions between them.
The mom angry at the dad, over the divorce and being cheated on. The sibling's fighting over claims and the massive wealth the father has. The son who ran away to be a solider instead of a doctor or executive like the rest of the family. Basically there's a lot of screaming and fighting even before you have the stress of being trapped in a bunker with hordes of undead scratching at the walls.
The son takes over pretty quickly, since despite his loner and reserved nature he's very good under a crisis situation and has the most skill suited to being the leader, something that causes immediate issues with the father since he's used to being in charge and doesn't like feeling impotent and in the background of that, there's a traitor inside stirring shit up.
