With the personal vs external, Hurik is a guy very divided on what he wants. He loves Robert and genuinely thinks of him as a dad, but a part of him also resents him not just because of his complicated feelings for Lyanna but the knowledge that he will never fully be his son. Hurik also wants respect and power and to be seen as more than his family, while at the same time wanting to be fully accepted and seen as one.

He has a lot of potential not just in leadership and charisma, but also magical power. And he feels that he should do something with that power, but he doesn't really know what that thing is. Should he conquer some distant Essos city? Should he loyally serve his nephews? He loves the North, but it's far away from the power and ambition he dreams about.

Brooding conflicted protag. And there's his dynamic with Ygrite which begins with her being like his dog and under his control but it undermines any romantic love that would grow

She's his in a way few things are. He has his mother, his Tearer, his sword and magic and his words, and Ygrite. Things that he can rely on

Basically Hurrik is a teenager. lol. And he doesn't really know what he wants to do with his live and more importantly who or if he should promise himself to someone. And what's really troubling him is not just with his own personal code but with the nature of magic, if he swears himself to someone it's forever. So he's looking for something or someone that'll make him feel at peace.

Except any match would be for the power it would give to be closer to the royal family. How do you think Hurik is compared to canon John Snow?

Jon Snow isn't as angry a lot more in control of himself. Although he's a lot more angry and arrogant than people give him credit for. He's also a lot less ambitious and sure of himself than Hurik. So if the two met, they would probably dislike each other but if they were forced to work together I think they could make a decent team since they cover each other's flaws pretty well.

It kind of makes me think of Obi-wan and Anakin during the Clone Wars actually, with Jon being the diplomat hiding a daredevil and Hurik being the aggressive hero hiding something darker.

That is a interesting comparison. Hurik does want to be the hero. You see it in the Ygrite interlude and his thoughts on Ygrite later in the bandit interlude. Hurik did justice by capturing Ygrite as she was attacking others with her village. And he's careful to spare those he can in the bandits.

Some interesting ideas. I don't see Jon Snow getting Isekai into your fic anytime soon, but I could see Hurik having a vision were he could have a couple different glimpses at how his life could've turned out in another lifetime. Could be a fun way to explore his character and show off some of his worse traits or play around with different AU's without having to commit to anything.
