The fic, again can't remember the name, had this concept that Link, Zelda, and Ganon were all stuck in their roles by the three goddesses that created them to begin with. In the Zelda games there's this whole background that they reincarnate and fight endlessly and that's the excuse for why Link and Zelda are always the main characters.
