I was going to talk about how player interaction with the world like having different dialogue based on character customization is the key to making a good game. But Gabe Newell can describe it a million times easier and faster, so I'll let him. lol

Realism is boring is absolutely true. Realism doesn't let my warrior do fire war shout spells

it's player interaction with the game that's fun. It's playing a shooter and being able to blow up the computers and tv's lying around. It's seeing bullet holes in the windows and walls. Or different materials having a variety of sound effects depending on what you do. Or different particles and dust effects. It's like from a purely gameplay view, none of what I just listed will have any impact.

But it feels good. It makes the world believable, and even without enemies to shoot at it makes just having a gun and a room enough to have fun.

It increases a connection between action and result in the world

Been reading this book called How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendry. Found it on sale at Target, liking it so far. This single mom goes home after the unexpected death of her parents, trying to deal with her personal and family issues as her alcoholic brother enters the mix while as the name suggests sell her parents house.

Except of course the house is haunted with something, and half the fun is trying to find out the mystery of who or what exactly that is.

Fun or gory haunting? Do people die screaming or friendly ghost?

It's pretty subtle right now, but then again I'm still early on the book. But for example the mom liked knitting dolls and these dolls are randomly appearing in places they shouldn't. Doors are opening and closing on their own. Appliance's like the tv are turning on by themselves.

Just enough insanity for the characters to know something's wrong, but not enough for them to openly say the house is haunted.

Does the back cover of the book imply great evil or comedic tone?
