Well that is book two. Book one is a whole bunch of other stuff as Tristan and Angarahd meet only briefly a few times in book one. Tristan is with Maryam who scouts him for herself and Song is with Angarahd. Song and Maryam are friends but Maryam dislikes Anargrahd for being a Malini noble while Song thinks Tristan is a shiftless man without principles.

This is made interesting in book two as Song starts to rely on Tristan and sees how he values kindness. Because of how broken and coldly alone his world is, Tristan thinks kindness is one of the greatest treasures in the world. Which is part of the reason he bonds with a old clockmaker who joins his trial crew in book one.
