Questionable Questing

With Dwayne before this he was a psychologist and in return for a whole heap load of money and career opportunities, was told to drug some of his patients with LSD mainly and use his credential and influence to help cover up some of the things the researchers where doing. Stuff like bugging their homes, using hypnosis on them, that kind of stuff.

With these "treatments" causing all three of his patients it was exposed to, to suffer some pretty grisly deaths. With the trauma and guilt over this whole experience causing Dwayne to sink into a deep depression, and self medicate with alcohol and prescription medications, culminating in a divorce with his wife as well as the murder of a Colleague who was going to spill the truth.

Interesting if grim

It all caused Dwayne to have a mental breakdown and kill his family and himself. With the rest of the story, following Dwayne as a ghost having to experience what his three patients had, and then relive his own memories and how he failed his family, until the end where he has the choice of accepting what's he done and moving past the purgatory he's stuck in or trying to forget and reliving the whole experience again.

With the gameplay being a walking simulator in this great big house, that shares the same layout and design but has some subtle changes from patient to patient that gets more extreme as time goes by. With each level having you collect clues and tools to advance past certain obstacles which forces you to explore and deal with some pretty nasty jump scares and a few chase scene with the ghost of the patients.

This all sounds extremely distressing to play through

I like how in trying to choose to forget he doesn't learn and just goes through the horror again and he murdered his whole family?

Yep. The game does not pull any punches with that and in multiple scenes the MC gets taunted over that fact by some very creepy looking masked figures. And with the good ending, Dwayne gets a glimpse of his family in heaven with the hint that he might reach there someday.

While the secret bad ending, which can be unlocked if you find the revolver he used hidden in the house and shoot yourself six times, then he goes to hell where everything goes pitch black and you hear some screams in the background. Since that's him refusing to take responsibility and actively avoiding it.

It is an incredibly scary game. I had to take multiple breaks and just set down the controller and ignore it for a couple hours to get through it. lol.

Why do you enjoy it?

Why do we like roller coasters? It's getting that feeling of danger even though you know you're in a safe space. If that makes any sense. It's getting that catharsis of really heavy emotions. It's hard to explain but why I love horror.

The music and graphics are also top notch, and the monster design while incredibly simplistic is pair with some of the best jump scenes I've ever scene in a game. This song below is an absolute banger.

Drat I missed this and awesome. Song of Achlies, Circe, Fury of the Gods by an author I really like, nordic inspired myth but gods are giant monster animals inspired by fenrir and Joumgander and another new book I need to test.
