    Paul apparently has a degree in political philosophy, so he does have at least some knowledge of how a society can function. Alan may be able to ask the AI what happens on other planets, but he may not necessarily understand it.

    I don't see why Alan has any less or any more ability to check the math than OL does. Since Paul has no special expertise he just asked his ring's AI to confirm. Alan's blue ring has a fully functional AI, doesn't it? (I think Kalmin made both a blue ring and lantern, not just a blue lantern.)
