    Very few in-setting have any clues as to the source of uma reincarnation; namely Neo Universe (aware of alternate realities), Stay Gold (aware their past life to an extent), and possibly Manhattan Cafe (can see spirits).     On the War Horse issue, remember that modern Umas are based on modern horses from our world. So war-Umas are not odd to read about in history books, but finding one in this age would be like finding a fully trained samurai that has dedicated their life to Bushido.
