On a Pale Horse (Umamusume/Youjo Senki)

But sooner or later they are going to find a mental box that Tanya fits in. And the idea that Orzel is a reincarnated warhorse (particularly from ww1 rather than the middle ages) rather than a racehorse feels like something that someone might come up with before long, if her trainer doesnt suspect it already. And once you make that assumption, suddenly a lot of the things that are sort of aberrant about Orzel start making sense.
Very few in-setting have any clues as to the source of uma reincarnation; namely Neo Universe (aware of alternate realities), Stay Gold (aware their past life to an extent), and possibly Manhattan Cafe (can see spirits). Beyond those 2 maybe 3, those aware of horses are practically non-existant.

Ah, i thought it was more understood.

Still, Tanya cant be the first 'warhorse' to be reborn in this context, even if the locals dont know what a warhorse is, they might still be able to peg her as one of those sorts the way the recognize the difference between race horses and workhorses?

Shiro father in chapter 1 talks about how Umas has some memories of past lives, so at least in this fic it's different (they don't necessarily need to understand that the memories come from their lives as horses and only from one past life as Uma).

tbh someone should realize pretty quickly that she can just flat out sprint every race in the trials and just tell her to do that. If her top speed is too low it might not win her every race, but it'll win more than what she's doing right now funnily enough.

Just going all in like that is going to make the newer Umas panic and fluster more easily.

Still, its reading like her top speed is going to be her... uhh, Spiritual Breakthrough(?). Her body is hitting its limit and its a fight of inches past that, either her body is going to break or she's going to break through her spiritual wall.

Which is a taller ask than most realize probably because she's basically healing from the scars and wounds of her previous lives now. And it was implied she had a horse life I think too, I remember there was a quick line about there being something fuzzy in-between the Soldier and Uma which would fit with having a horse brain, so there's the question of what happened in that life.

I am curious what Stay Gold sees when looking at her. Other than the probable attraction I mean.

I'm confused here. I get how Shirogane saw the posters, but how did she get emails she apparently wasn't supposed to get?
The Emails may be have been forwarded by her Trainer.
While the emails being accidentally forwarded by her trainer makes sense, it would be a far funnier explanation if her networking with the security team resulted in them making absolutely certain she knew (as an undercover security guard).

Oh, there's a thought. Maybe Being X got so annoyed with Tanya that it incarnated her as a war animal or something and then the Three Goddesses cold clocked him.

So based on something that didn't actually happen? Considering the modern concept of a samurai is only vaguely historically accurate?
But yeh any Umas based on warhorses would be at least a century old considering Warhorses really died out as a concept in ww1 with the adoption of the machine gun. I guess she could be from a line that was originally bred for cavalry, but considering how many generations ago that would have been?

Edit: Thinking on it further due to the differences between Umas and actual horses there may be actual still be lines of War-Umas continuing on, much as there are military "families" IRL where the expected occupation growing up is to join the army. I can imagine a war-Umas in boot talking about how her great gran was "first off the boats at Omaha"
No, warhorses are very much still in living memory. Horse cavalry was still used to great effect in WW2, mainly on the vast steppes of the Eastern Front and China, as a cavalry unit can move faster than a foot infantry unit the same size while taking up far less resources than an equivalent armored or motorized unit. Hell, as recently as Afghanistan there's been the occasional use—turns out it's far easier to get a horse up a mountain than a truck, so they're very useful for transportation, and there was even the occasional cavalry charge.

I've speculated before in-thread that Shirogane is likely a Polish-bred Arabian rather than a racing thoroughbred, as those have been specifically bred for use as warhorses for centuries (and over a millennia once you look at Arabians outside of Poland) and their characteristics (namely, far more stamina than your average thoroughbred, and slower than your average thoroughbred but still faster than the vast majority of non-thoroughbreds) match up with Shirogane's described traits.

There's a big difference between "a horse used in war" and "a horse trained to charge into gun lines while ignoring explosions" both are technically warhorses, but they are not the same.

Watching Tanya go on sprint training that hard was incredibly satisfying. Also funny. It reminds of an Umamusume run where the trainer(Tanya) has decided to focus on speed training after starting with quite good stamina and guts. Well, speed is a truly quintessential stat to train, so no problems there! Also, it's ironic that her 'reincarnator' privileges are somewhat muted in this world because her competitors are technically the same, albeit with a lack of memories.

The umas do not know, but they feel it. Whereas Tanya knows, but does not feel it!

I get that most of the races are just regulation ones, around a circular track, but surely there's gotta be Uma doing Parkour, Rambling, hell, an Uma version of Rally B even... I'd find it really cool if there were like Scandinavian/Nordic Uma doing rally races!

I feel like Uma-Tanya would do really well on rally style races, over these traditional NASCAR style races...

Uma on the Mongolian Steppe, or up in the mountains of the Alps, doing long range S&R, or in the Aussie outback, culling troublesome animals, like the wild cats...

There has GOT to be Uma out there running the valley and mountain roads like drifters, a horsegirl adaptation of Initial D... Just Tanya out there trying to deliver food on time, beating out the 'pro' rally racers... We've already seen her do essentially that in an urban environment, but like getting a husky and expecting it to do well in California, Tanya was meant for the twisting turns and sharp descents of country lane racing.
