ANBU found one me in my apartment hours later. I sensed them coming and could have very well slipped away, but I wanted answers. My packing and preparations were already done and I needed information. It was past time I dealt with the rat.
A part of me was also worried about Secretary-chan. I hadn't been in a state of mind to worry about her when all went down, but I did now. Chiyo had turned out to be a traitor, but what about Kiyo? had it just been a betrayal of opportunity, or were both on it together?
What gave me pause on believing that Kiyo was on this too was that she left. If both were working together, it makes no sense why she would leave instead of trying to capture me. It makes more sense that she wasn't involved at all, and had no idea that Chiyo was also a traitor.
Yamato in his Tenzo guise was the one who ventured inside my house, while the other three hid around. Why they were hiding made no sense to me. ANBU knew I could sense them, right? Were they trying to prevent me from running away?
I was leaning against the wall, twirling a black kunai. "What took you so long?"
Tenzo looked around, then at my full shinobi attire. He shrugged, "There were other attacks."
That made sense. I hadn't considered it until now, but it was strange that none of the Uchiha police, or even the ANBU noticed what happened and intervened and that it took them this long to find me.
"That bad?"
"We shouldn't delay," he said instead of answering. Yep, pretty bad then. "Follow," he said, at the same time he signed a different message: Several assassination attempts. High value targets. Daimyo included. Core infrastructure disrupted. Dead Kumo shinobi found.
Shit, that didn't sound good at all. Had Danzo taken the opportunity to attack me while the village was distracted or had he orchestrated the whole thing? The first option was easier to deal with, the second showed a level of influence that was daunting.
We took to the shinobi highways, with Tenzo leading and the other three ANBU positioned around me. I felt important, getting escorted to meet important people. Hehe.
At the tower, we went directly toward the underground and the IT deeps. I was half expecting them to try and force me inside a cell. Thankfully for everyone involved, that didn't happen.
Tenzo led me toward an observation room.
There, I found the Hokage, the Jonin commander, the head of the Intelligence Department and head of the IT deeps, Morino Ibiki. On the other side of the one way glass, was a large room with a seal drawn on the ground. At the center was Chiyo, with Tsunade and a few other shinobi kneeling at the cardinal points of the seal and doing… something.
"We don't expect her to survive the day," Ibiki said. "but with luck, the Sannin will be able to give us time to extract any information we can."
I said nothing. I felt nothing.
Inoichi turned to me next. "Tell us what happened?"
And so I did. I recounted everything I could remember from the encounter. The message I received, finding Secretary-chan, disabling her, then Kiyo and Chiyo showing up, getting saved by Mister Tama.
"What happened to my friend?" I asked, still staring at the dying hag in the other room.
"Your friend?" Ibiki asked, looking at me intently.
"She was being controlled," I took a deep breath. "I didn't realize it at the time, but now that I had time to think, it makes sense."
"How so?" Inoichi asked next.
I turned to the gathered shinobi. This shouldn't be a secret to any of them anyway.
"I can sense chakra," I started, "not as detailed as Karin, but she's been teaching me how to refine my senses. I could feel that something was different with my friend. It isn't the first time either. The shinobi that attacked my team in the Land of Waves felt similar."
"You think…" Ibiki didn't complete his sentence.
"Danzo," I declared.
"That's speculation." Ibiki countered.
"I don't need to speculate. That traitor is behind the attack, the same way he tried to capture me back then. What I don't know is why he's so fixated on me." I glared at Ibiki. "What happened to my friend?"
Shisui was the one who spoke next.
"Kiyo never contacted us. At this point, we don't know if she's working with the enemy, or if she was intercepted before she reached us. Your friend is missing as well."
I scowled. I really hoped Kiyo wasn't another traitor, but if she wasn't, then I had two people to rescue. I would find out soon enough.
"And what are you going to do?"
I shrugged.
"You can point me at Danzo and give me info to make my life easier and I'll go kill a traitor with your blessing."
Inoichi scowled. "…Or?"
"Or I go kill a traitor without your blessing and might cause a war, who knows."
Ibiki stepped toward me. "You are spouting treason in front of the Hokage; we could imprison you for that."
I shrugged again and smiled. It was a nasty one full of teeth on display. "You could try."
Ibiki tensed, but Shisui chuckled, shaking his head.
"You aren't here, are you?"
"Nope," I said, delighted. If it was English, I would have popped the p with satisfaction. In Japanese, I just stretched the word as much as I could.
The top dogs of the village exchanged glances. The jonin commander, who had been quiet until now, stepped forward.
"We're assigning you to a team to investigate the attack," he said. "It's a long term mission outside the Land of Fire and you won't be able to contact us once you leave the village. If you get captured, this mission doesn't exist."
Finally things were moving. I nodded.
"We are assigning to you a squad to help—"
"If you try to saddle me with spies to prevent me from doing what I need to do, I'll ditch them."
Nara Shikaku didn't miss a beat. "—with teammates you can trust and approve of to help you on this mission."
We hashed out a few more details and defined a meeting point, a landmark a few kilometers away from the village. If things were like they should, Original-Chan should be way past the village walls by now.
My first destination was back at Land of Waves. They've been investigating missing shinobi for a while, and might have clues that will help me find Danzo. With everything arranged and decided, I, Decoy-chan, waved at them, hugged Shusui, because omigawd it was freaking Shisui, then dispersed into smoke.
I opened my eyes to a flood of memories from my clone. I don't know if I wanted to hug her or strangle her. I thought my clones were getting better after I started dating Ino. Guess I was wrong. My hands flashed into a seal and I sent another clone to wait at the agreed meeting point carrying a black kunai.
I was starting to get worried. The clone I sent to tell Ino what happened hadn't dispersed yet. I didn't feel any urgency on the link with her, it felt like my clone was enjoying herself. If that gremlin decided to make out with my Ino instead of delivering her message, I was going to strangle her.
The hour idled away with no sign of Ino. The clone waiting at the meeting point dispersed and I understood what was happening.
Getting up, I dusted my clothes, then did the confrontation seal, and in a flash of dark glory, there I was ready to face my friends.
There were three shinobi waiting for me:
Yamato dressed in civilian clothes. Was he trying to disguise himself? The huge black eyes gave him away.
The second shinobi was someone I wasn't expecting. Red in all her glory, dressed to kill and fuming at me. Sheesh, I guess she was mad I hadn't told her about the attack or leaving.
Then there was Yellow. Pretty, amazing, perfect Ino. Also glaring at me.
Oops.
I pointed at Yamato. "I dub thee Green-kun!"
Red rolled her eyes. Yellow facepalmed. Green looked confused.
Then I turned toward the road and did a heroic pose. "Fuin☆Rangers, move out!"
"Ready to move, Black-chan!" Red promptly answered my call.
"Ignore them," Ino said to Yamato, walking past me.
Damn, I got no respect.
And my clone still hadn't dispersed. I was pretty sure she was making out with Ino's clone, like usual. I was kinda jelly.
A part of me was also worried about Secretary-chan. I hadn't been in a state of mind to worry about her when all went down, but I did now. Chiyo had turned out to be a traitor, but what about Kiyo? had it just been a betrayal of opportunity, or were both on it together?
