Bakuda Quest! Or 'Problem Solving Through The Application Of Explosives!'

[x]"Of course, no legal actions." You never said illegal though...

[X]"You'd better not fuck up..." or I'll finish the job for you... of course, I'll make sure to be ready... its time to work on some nice toys. Pain bombs and other such devices and make sure to have a safety in them to NOT detonate with you in range.

You entertain fantasies in your head as the rest of the meeting goes by and deals are worked out. Despite you barely listening, you milk the university for not just the honor roll and an automatic passing grade on your doctorate, but also a guarantee of tenure at Cornell and a letter of recommendation to any other university and institute in the nation if you saw fit to go for employment elsewhere.

Even so, the sting that your original work can no longer be considered yours is bitter and deep, and you find no solace in the concessions as you fix a pofessional smile on your face and depart with the detective back to the police station to finish giving your statement, this time with a black-suited representative from the PRT present to make sure you stayed quiet all nice and legal-like, even offering you a cheque that you accepted.

Gained: $10,000 in Personal Bank Account.

It may have been hush-money, but it would give you the means to get your operation running all the faster. And the trip home had your head filled with various ideas for missile and rocket warheads, powered armor, grenades, bombs...you nearly felt your head spinning before you forcefully reigned it in.

You collapse on the couch of your apartment and sigh. So far, so good, if you were a more emotional person then perhaps you might have done something stupid.

Like hold the university hostage.

Achievement unlocked: The First Ripple.
Description: You have made a single, important, deviation from canon. How many more will follow?
Reward: Choose one of the following-
[]Ghost Grenade: A sticky particulate grenade that renders anyone caught in the cloud invisible for a short period.
[]Reactive Claymore Suit: Any successful attack causes an automatic Explosive:RM result against the attacker. Good for six attacks before requiring replenishing.
[]New Material (Vile Biological Material): Allows you to harvest and use Vile Biological Material for biowarfare bombs.
[]New System (Anti-Gravity): Allows you to make bombs, missiles and armor that can hover or fly.

But you can't just sit around and do nothing now. You have to make sure that when they screw up, either the police or Protectorate, you will be there to covertly enact vengeance upon that thief. But how?

He's in another state and you're pretty sure that while it's a cliche, the phrase "Don't leave town" existed for a reason while there was a police investigation. Still, you had to do something about this situation. Looking around, you focus on turning your powers towards getting tools and equipment.

Starting your inspection, your mind begins laying out the possibilities for an array of materials and tools that you can use. You stifle a giggle at seeing just how versatile your kitchen blender is for a variety of roles.

Your mind is whirling with the possibilities at your fingertips and you consider what to do as you start making a sandwich for yourself.

You could make a basic kit, use the majority of the materials for devices and explosives. It would mean slow work, but you'd have an early arsenal of equipment that you could employ in case of need.

A balance between kit and weapons might be an equally good start, allowing you to work on more complicated systems straight from the start.

Or you could just dedicate the majority of your stuff towards making the best possible equipment, with the leftovers used for basic weaponry. That could let you get started on bigger projects relatively early.

Hmm, and perhaps spend some money as well?

You decide to make a sandwich while you think.

[]Basic Kit: Can only make Basic weapons and armor.
[]Balanced Kit: Can make Basic and Advanced weapons and armor.
[]Elite Kit: Can make Basic, Advanced and Elite weapons and armor.

What should you make with the left-overs?
[]Offensive Weaponry.
[]Defensive Weaponry.
[]Armor.
[]Balanced Mix.

Spend some cash?

You have ideas and since you have plenty of free time until this mess cools down, you decide that your home could be put to better use making some proper tools and some starting kit. Just in case you have to fix this mess personally.

You begin taking apart everything that you can spare, from clocks to random electronics to your microwave and dishwasher, while your bowls and glasses become beakers and mixers as you let the designs flow from your mind, directed by your priorities and willpower.

First thing's first, you need a toolkit in order to make things in the field, and for that reason you're glad you had that brief fascination with metal-sculpting as you take apart some welding equipment you kept in your closet and strip down an old laptop you forgot to scrap for cash, an old CRT TV from a previous occupant that didn't clean up, everything you can get your hands on is taken apart for your first major project.

After several hours, you finish and stand back to look at your work.

You've managed to make a large case, with shoulder straps so you can carry it on your shoulders, containing a dizzying array of strange tools that you somehow know are capable of doing what you need them to, so long as you bother to keep it maintained. Which you will, you won't accept anything else.

Opening it you look over the strange drills and clamps, fingers idly brushing a set of screens before you flick a switch and turn them on to see lights begin to glow and information run across the screens before you turn them off.

Time to give this a test-drive as you gather the left-over materials and began assembling, scanning and welding.

It takes hours, and the house is completely drained of any useful materials except for your computer and TV, along with the necessary sacrifice of some old clothing you were planning on throwing out or giving to goodwill, your mother's influence really, to finish making your first real creations.

Looking at them, arrayed on your kitchen table, you feel as though they should be alien to you. But you understand them perfectly.

Impact Jacket: A leather jacket that explosively reverses any physical attacks.
Damage Reduction: 2
Special: Any Impact or Blade Damage causes an explosive kinetic energy reversal, returning the damage caused.

x4 Lifter Grenades: A defensive grenade that uses your newly-discovered knowledge of anti-gravity to create a field that lifts people into the air, where they will remain for two turns.

x4 Thermal Bombs: Powerful thermal energy de-regulators that cause catastrophic heat release in people and objects, igniting or melting them.
New Damage Track: Thermal - Scorched/Burnt/?/?/?/?

Looking around your stripped home, you laugh at what you've done before grabbing your bag and keys. Locking up, you head outside to head to the mall, whistling as you walk.

-$8000

You proceed to go on a shopping spree, purchasing electronics, appliances, and some furniture you've been meaning to acquire for a long while. A lot of the money goes into purchasing in twos and threes, explaining the numbers away as gifts for friends and relatives.

The most expensive purchase was a pair of $2000 professional-level chemistry kits before you finish off trip with a series of large sketchbooks, pencils and pens, and a very large bag of caramel chews from a candy store on the way home.

For the rest of the day you unpack, and disassemble, your new acquisitions after replacing what you took apart in the first place.

+500 Scrap
+500 Electronics
+150 Isotopes

With everything packed away, you spend the rest of the night sketching and planning.

Temporary bonus: 50% Material Reduction and +10 Bonus to next creation roll.

You weren't able to acquire any useful chems for your explosive components so the next morning, you start looking for recycling plants and junkyards that you might be able to acquire the necessary materials.

1d100=91

You get lucky and hit paydirt.

A nearby recycling center is offering recovered chemicals at a relatively affordable price. There's a background check involved but you should be able to justify the purchase for your university work.

More searching brings up a local junkyard that is looking to sell a lot of their scrap incredibly cheap in order to make room for their own metal recycling machine.

You also find something interesting. About three years ago, a bus-sized meteor fell to Earth containing a massive metallic crystal that grows like a plant, creating strange fractal leaves that radiate a harmless energy.

A large chunk of the crystal is now being offered by it's owner, but the purchaser has to travel to New York to meet them, and it won't be on offer for long.

You still have a fairly large chunk of money left, and a free week, so you should be able to figure something out.

-Recycling Center: $200 per 20 units of Chemicals, available for 6 days.
-Junkyard: $50 per 100 units of Scrap and Electronic Parts, available for 8 days.
-Unknown Crystal: Unknown benefits, unknown price, only available for 3 days!

Wallet: $3000

Oh shit, is that tiberium or timonium? The latter is actually safe, but either way. DO WANT.

It's...

a metallic crystal that grows fractal leaves radiating a harmless(?) and unknown energy. I'm not going to give the game away just yet.

[X]Make way to New York to examine this crystal. It calls out to you.

It's only a short trip into Manhattan itself where the owner of the crystal is and you've been meaning to go for a drive anyway. Getting into your car and starting the engine, you drive out of the apartment parking lot and head for the nearest gas station to fill up for the drive into the city.

-$80

Wallet: $2920

You don't really pay much attention to the time taken to reach New York, only that it was night-time when you crossed the bridge into Manhattan Island. Finding parking near the address is a more difficult challenge.

1d100=20

You finally manage to find a parking space, but it's several blocks away from the actual address, which means spending another hour walking there. But despite all these petty annoyances, you press on, unwilling to let someone of lesser intelligence get that crystal to use as a paperweight or garden decoration!

Heading up the front stairs of the old-style apartment building, you quickly check the names on the mail boxes against your own memory.

Professor Ranes, here we are, third floor. Heading through the doors you quickly head up the stairs towards the third floor, frowning as you hear what sounds like a heated argument as you reach the landing and head down the hallway to the source of the noise.

You turn a corner just in time to see a woman arguing with an older man, and you draw back to listen in.

"...for the last time, Director, no means no! I will not hand over the crystal until I have met all of the potential buyers!"

"Professor Ranes, I must ask you to be reasonable! The crystal could be invaluable to our own Tinkers and I was there for the interviews, none of those people can use that material to the extent that the PRT and Protectorate can. I've made it perfectly clear that we can reimburse you handsomely for the crystal-"

"And I have made it perfectly clear that I am not done yet! I have one more prospective buyer coming and I will meet her!" The old man looks pretty pissed off, but fuck it, you're the final buyer right? You walk around the corner and deliberately knock loudly on the wall to get their attention.

The woman and the man turn and the man smiles, "Miss Alice?" At your nod, his smile widens as you draw close enough to shake his hand, "Wonderful, wonderful, my name is Professor Joachim Ranes, please come inside so you can see the crystal."

Your lips curl into a smile as you walk past the frowning woman and after the professor into his apartment.

The place is a veritable cornucopia of various exotic items, and your power is buzzing with how to weaponise it all. But what catches your attention is the large chunk of crystal laid out on a table, curling fractal leaves twitching and shifting in alien patterns.

The moment your eyes land upon it, your power hits you with designs of warheads capable of cracking the boundaries of time and space, of armour that could withstand the Endbringers. You see madness, greatness, peace, war, life, death, all rolled into one.

You stare at the crystal with open, naked longing, before you manage to clamp down on your emotions and spare a glance at the other two occupants to see if they noticed.

"A fascinating thing, isn't it?" Professor Ranes motions towards the crystal as a bulb unfurls into a fractal-pattern flower, a delicate rhomboid shape in the center that you know contains enough potential energy to reduce a city to ash. You struggle to pay attention as he keeps talking, "This crystal has so far defied scientific explanation but it has yielded important information in the field of physics, information that could one day benefit the world."

He turns to you and you force yourself to meet his eyes, "I know about you. Alice Williams. I've actually be given some of your work. It's incredible, the work you've done, and I think you have a bright future ahead of you. Tell me something." He motions to the crystal, "If you unlocked the secrets of this crystal, what would you do with it?"

You realize that you need to think long and hard about this.

Roll 1d100. The best of 5 rolls will be used.
