A/N: Special thanks to Greatkingrat88 for the beta work on the chapter and helping identify any problem areas or places needing expansion. And thanks to everyone for the likes and other feedback, its very appreciated.
In light of family tragedies and other horrors that had befallen me for the last six months, I am trying to get back into the full groove of writing, but this chapter I had ready a long time ago. I was hoping to finish chapter seven first before posting it.
In this chapter Maya gets introduced.
Chapter 6
His Name is Zero
The following day since classes had been canceled in preparation and in observance of Prince Clovis's upcoming funeral. Lelouch saw it as merely a chance to check up on some work he had requested to be done following events of Shinjuku, knowing something to mask his identity would be needed especially since he was planning to meet Ohgi's group. Kallen's presence and connection to that group was convenient, and saved him the trouble of trying to find them on his own.
I just need to hope he has come through for me, Lelouch thought.
A short time later Lelouch arrived at the shop owned by the elderly wealthy noble he had sometimes been called in to play in chess matches. That same noble was an artificer who had the means and connections to make what he needed.
"Oh hello Lelouch, what can I do for you?"
"I've come to check on that
very special order," Lelouch said, using a code word to trigger the effect of his Geass he had placed upon the man.
"Everything is just as you requested," the old man said before disappearing into the backroom for a moment before returning with a large rectangle-shaped bag.
"It's all as I wanted along with a second one as a backup?" Lelouch asked, prompting the old man to nod.
"The slide system was tricky, but I had the best in the business working on it. It functions as needed and I included instructions per your wishes."
"Excellent," Lelouch said before paying the man for his work.
He might've used his Geass to make the man do this task, but he had no intention of making him do it for free. After all it could cause him to investigate if began considering what resources and costs, he had spent should he notice it could cause a unneeded complication. "This payment is going under three different false names and orders, right?"
"Yes, it is," the old man replied.
Lelouch wisely had his true order broken up into three different orders under a different name, each order using materials needed for his order made towards something else. Making it highly unlikely to draw any suspicion and cover up any potential trails he could've left.
"And you know what you must do next right."
"Yes, once I've erased all of the evidence, I should forget this ever happened, right?"
"Exactly, now do so."
Once Lelouch was finished, he departed the shop and was grateful the man limited those he conducted business and was not actively sought out which worked in Lelouch's favor. He left without incident and he had what he needed for tomorrow afternoon, all Lelouch needed was to make the needed preparations.
However, he had one other matter to attend to.
Back at the Area 11 Military Academy; Oldrin, Marika, Toto, Lilianna and Marrybell were in simulators engaging one another in one-on-one combat with the rest of their class.
Up next was Toto against Marika.
The two, like the other academy students, were using Glasgows modified for training purposes using specialized close quarters weapons that would disable a Knightmare Frame upon a solid hit in the right area to simulate real combat as much as possible. For ranged combat, however, they had to use Knightmare Frame-size paint ball guns.
Their instructor Hilda watched Toto and Marika enter the small arena, which had some places cadets could use as cover in battle. As soon as the two cadets were in their designated starting positions Hilda pushed a button sounding a bell, the signal to begin.
Marika, being the more aggressive of the two charged in, shooting at Toto with paint bullets as the latter took cover behind a wall. Using another wall to approach Marika suspected Toto was trying to bait into getting close to get the upper hand.
However, unseen by Marika and having expected her to take a more cautious approach, Toto was using the other walls and barriers to get around and flank Marika. Lucky for Marika, she noticed Toto approaching prompting her to turn around and engage her foe head on.
"Huh!?" Toto exclaimed, caught by surprise.
Toto regained her composure and managed to pull back in time to avoid Marika's counterattack. Marika on the other hand pursued her foe, firing her slash harkens to knock her Glasgow's rifle from its hands leaving Toto with no choice but to engage her in close quarters.
Unfortunately, Toto excelled more in close quarters combat, than ranged combat.
"I got you now," Marika declared.
Toto dodged Marika's strike, but eager for a finishing blow she overextended herself allowing Toto to strike her torso disabling her machine using her Glasgow's stun-tonfa which had a electromagnetic charge added to it.
"Well done Cadet Toto," Hilda said speaking through a loud speaker. "Cadet Marika, you need to be more mindful and not let the eagerness for a kill cloud your better judgment."
"Yes ma'am," Marika said, quite disappointed in herself.
"Alright, clear out and make way for cadets Marrybell and Oldrin," Hilda announced.
"Me and Marry!?" Oldrin said, very surprised.
Liliana on the other hand was thankful she wasn't set to fight Oldrin, she had the usual misfortune of being paired up against her.
"Don't tell me you feel intimidated by me," Marrybell said teasingly from her cockpit.
"Of course not," Oldrin replied quickly.
"Cadet Oldrin, you better not go easy on her. I expect you to give your fellow cadet all you got. It would be an insult to her, even if you are childhood friends," Hilda warned sternly via an open communication channel.
Of course, she would find out about that, Oldrin though, their instructor was noteworthy for learning all she could about the cadets in her charge then using that knowledge to devise a mean to develop them.
"I shall give her my best ma'am," Oldrin replied.
Marrybell and Oldrin entered the small arena from their respective entrances. After a nerve-racking few minutes, the bell sounded beginning the battle.
Oldrin used the walls for cover while approaching Marrybell's side of the arena. But, with little warning, Marrybell attacked with a lance. The arena had sets of electromagnetic lances used for training with Marrybell finding one placed in the arena. Oldrin narrowly evaded, but she had to get away to counterattack as she was still within reach of Marrybell's lance.
Oldrin's lack of a weapon made it easier for her to evade, but after dodging another attack from Marrybell the blonde-haired woman escaped to locate a weapon to fight back with. Luckily there was more than once place to obtain a weapon in the arena.
There!
Oldrin quickly took up an electromagnetic lance into the hands of machine, and just in time as Marrybell had pursued her. She spun around just in time to deflect Marrybell's attack, Oldrin aggressively kept up her offense to prevent the former princess from fighting back. Unfortunately, in her aggressive attack, Marrybell pulled back allowing Oldrin to overextend herself, creating an opening the former princess was quick to capitalize on.
Striking fast, Marrybell landed a blow on the chest of Oldrin's machine disabling it.
"Well done Cadet Marrybell, I think you've just proven yourself the best in your class," Hilda complimented. "Let that be a lesson to the rest of you, remember attacking hard and fast without hesitation in battle is useful to win and survive. But get too aggressive and careless, which can allow a foe to strike an opening if you over extend yourselves."
"Yes ma'am," the cadets in the observation room said, together while Toto and Marika were worried about how Oldrin would take losing to Marrybell, she hated losing.
Back at Ashford Academy, Lelouch was taking care of one last piece of business for the Student Council, he was heading for the School Shop, where students could buy food and other useful items for those living in the dorms so they wouldn't need to leave the campus.
She should be around here somewhere, Lelouch thought, glancing at the photo he was given by Milly.
There was one more person meant to join the student council, but they weren't present when Kallen had returned to school. According to what Lelouch had been told, she was out sick for a week with a cold, and had returned this morning.
Based on what Milly has learned she comes here Thursday afternoon to buy things, Lelouch thought before finding his target.
A young woman, who was the same age as Lelouch was buying a large paper bag worth of things, was at the counter paying for them. She had long black hair and blue eyes with a fair skin complexion wearing the standard uniform for female students. She wore a black and white lace headband above her forehead.
"There you go, buying a lot as usual huh. Helping your mom out with shopping I suppose?" The storekeeper behind the counter asked.
"Yes, she is usually very busy and I don't see her often. I just help where I can," The girl replied.
"I see, in that case she should be glad to have a dutiful daughter like you."
"Thank you, sir," The girl said, paying the man.
"Excuse me, Miss Maya Garfield, is it?" Lelouch inquired politely.
"Yes, but no need to be so formal, Maya is just fine. You're Lelouch the Student Council Vice-President? I've seen you a few times at the KMF League Club."
"That is me, I take you were interested in joining their club, but it filled up before you could sign up," Lelouch said with an amused smile.
"That's right, I am sure I wasn't the only one who missed out," Maya replied sharing the same amused smile.
"Indeed, but why don't we talk with benches so you aren't holding that while we talk," Lelouch suggested while doing the gentlemanly thing and offering to carry Maya's bag.
"Sure, but don't worry I got this," Maya said, declining the offer.
"Ok."
A few minutes later the two found a bench outside with Lelouch sitting on the left and Maya on the right with her bag beside her.
"So, I understand you are not part of a club currently?"
"Yes, I was interested in joining the KMF League Club, but they filled up very quickly. The rest either didn't suit me or my schedule or were called the Fantasy Seduction Club," Maya replied before inquiring. "Seriously how did club get approved."
"You can thank the Student Council President for that one," Lelouch replied with an understanding smile.
"Right, I suppose that is no surprise given all I've heard about her," Maya said before asking another question. "Is this about me joining the Student Council then, since the rule is all students have to be involved in a club?"
"Yes, that is right," Lelouch answered, glad that Maya was someone who caught on quick. "We would've invited you on the day when we invited the other new members, but you were out sick so I apologize."
"It's fine, it couldn't be helped. But, doesn't the Student Council have a lot of new members?"
"It does, but two of them have other clubs they are apart of, such as Nina who is with the science club and is usually more focused on research than student council work most times. But she is good with numbers when it comes to the budget. Shirley has obligations to both the swim team and the gymnastics team, and Rivalz has a part time job that can pull him away sometimes," Lelouch explained, but there was another reason, the one he had shared with Monica, Marirrosa and Kallen previously. "Finally, there is the Student Council President herself, who can be rather chaotic whenever something or someone strikes here fancy complicating things."
"Leading to you to rein in her wilder ideas, I've heard about that too. People call you Milly Ashford's handler than the Vice-President," Maya said, earning a laugh from Lelouch.
"Well, that is technically true I suppose," Lelouch replied after composing himself. "But there wouldn't be much work involved other than the usual paper work, so I doubt joining should interfere with your schedule much. Beyond that we usually help out and plan events."
"I suppose that sounds fine then; I mean everyone has to be in a club, right?" Maya asked, which Lelouch nodded. "Then I'll join, better than few remaining options there were."
"Thank you I am glad to hear that," Lelouch said, grateful to have the extra help, especially he might become busy himself in the coming weeks. "Here are any details you might need."
Lelouch gave Maya a few documents which she put inside the bag, "Thanks I'll look over them later."
Suddenly the alarm on Maya's watch went off.
"Shoot, I am sorry I need to go I am going to be late for an appointment," Maya said after looking at her watch.
"Of course, I'll see you the day after tomorrow then," Lelouch said as he watched Maya get up, taking her bag.
"Sure, and thanks."
With that Maya ran off, obviously in a hurry to be on time for her appointment, but Lelouch noticed something fall onto the ground in her wake.
"Wait, Maya you dropped something," Lelouch said trying to call out to her, but Maya was already gone from sight and earshot.
Walking over, Lelouch went to pick up what Maya had dropped intending to return it to her the next time he saw her.
Huh, an origami crane? Lelouch thought, upon picking up a blue paper origami crane.
"I finished hanging up the laundry Miss Sayoko," Benio replied, entering the kitchen to see Sayoko cooking something.
Benio was wearing her new clothes, which consisted of a white button up shirt, a pink sweater with a V-collar, and a pink skirt with black shocks and white sneakers.
"Thank you, why not take a break. Lunch will be ready soon," Sayoko offered.
A short time later, Benio and Sayoko were seated together at a dinner table, it was small and round. It was to be expected since it was Sayoko's own room. She shared a room on Ashford Academy grounds at the ballroom clubhouse where the Lamperouge Siblings lived. Since coming under Sayoko's care, Benio was recognized as the daughter of a friend of Sayoko was taking care of. Lelouch with the use of his power, ensured no problems would arise and even enabled Benio to be a registered Honorary Britannian while covering up where she came from to diminish any possible trials that could cause problems.
Sayoko had yet to be made aware of Lelouch's power, but it did raise questions about how Lelouch was able to make these arrangements for Benio.
Was he caught up during Shinjuku, but what kind of role did master Lelouch have in it?
Still despite her questions, Sayoko was at least confident that Lelouch had good intentions, otherwise why would he go through so much trouble to help Benio?
But, at some point Sayoko would seek answers from Lelouch.
Later that afternoon Kallen had arrived at Tokyo Tower, or rather what was left of it as part of the tower above the observation room had collapsed. Since the war seven years ago it had been converted into a museum about the war seven years ago that saw Japan become Area 11, offering a heavy propaganda account of the war from Britannia's side.
This is the last place anyone who killed a Prince of Britannia would meet, but I suppose its BECAUSE it would be the last place anyone would suspect, Kallen thought.
At that is what Kallen believed, with the news of Suzaku Kururgui's arrest she was nervous this was some kind of trap, but she did share Zero's belief that Suzaku was merely a scapegoat. Considering the kind of security Clovis had, it was hard to imagine someone like Suzaku, who as far as Kallen has been able to gleam from newspaper articles, was a Britannian footsoldier. Adding to her doubts was a lack of explanation over
how Suzaku got close, either they were saving it for the trial or they weren't sure either.
Maybe I should ask Zero when I get a chance on how he got close to Clovis to kill him, Kallen thought as she entered.
Cautiously glancing over her shoulder, Kallen spotted Oghi with two of his friends and fellow resistance fighters Sugiyama and Yoshida in tow. The plan was they would follow behind Kallen, enough to keep her in their sights, but not too close to alert anyone that they were following Kallen.
Unfortunately, yet lucky for them Lelouch had expected this.
Of course she would bring her friends, it's not a bad decision, but they should've worked on being a little less obvious, Lelouch thought.
Unknown to Kallen and her friends, Lelouch was sitting on an old bench near the Tokyo Tower, far away enough to avoid notice, yet easy enough for him to spot a red-haired girl in a school uniform. This wasn't a place anyone from Ashford Academy would go to, so spotting Kallen was quite easy.
Now I just need to wait, Lelouch said, checking his watch, in five minutes it would be four o'clock, everything was in place.
Meanwhile inside, Kallen rode the elevator up to the observation deck, Ohgi and his friends would catch the next one for the sake of appearances, but the pre-recorded announcement playing around the exhibits in the museum continued in the elevator telling over and over again how Britannia's defeat opened the unenlightened eyes of the Elevens, making them understand their place in the world.
Ugh, this sounds more like brainwashing, Kallen thought wanting to get this over with as fast as possible.
Exiting the elevator she headed for the observation balcony, overlooking the destroyed city scape located near the tower, it was a depressing sight. It wasn't long before Ohgi and others caught up, keeping their distance, holding conversation with one another for the sake of appearances.
Checking her watch, Kallen saw it was four o'clock, and seemingly on the dot.
"Attention please. Paging Miss Kallen Stadtfeld, Ashford Academy. One of your personal effects has been turned in at the kiosk on the observation deck. I repeat," a woman announced overhead, surprising Kallen.
Noticing a nod from Ohgi, Kallen made her way to the counter, feeling slightly nervous.
"Hello I am Kallen Stadtfeld," Kallen said, showing her school ID.
"Ah yes, thank you for coming. It seems this belongs to you and someone turned in a short time ago," The woman behind the counter said, opening a drawer to hand Kallen a cellphone. "Uh, something wrong? This phone is yours isn't it?"
"Uh yes it is, sorry I was a little lost in thought, thank you," Kallen said, accepting the phone.
"Not at all, have a nice day."
As Kallen walked away, unseen to all, red rings surrounded her eyes, as the woman behind the counter sent a text message prepared beforehand. Once it was sent she erased all trace of it from her phone before regaining her senses, momentarily confused before moving on.
Lelouch received the text message on his phone, or rather the phone he intended to use to contact Kallen and her resistance friends to protect his identity.
Smiling as Lelouch got up, taking a large bag with him, he dialed the number of the phone the woman gave Kallen on his behalf.
"Zero? Uh…hello?" Kallen asked, answering the phone.
"I want you to board the outbound train on loop line five. And bring your friends, you were smart not to come alone," Lelouch said, offering a compliment.
"What?!"
"You didn't think I would hold a meeting in such a public place, don't worry I made arrangements we would have part of the train to ourselves," Lelouch said before offering some final words before hanging up. "I'll be waiting, and I'll call you again once you are on the train."
"Wait…"
Lelouch hung up before heading towards the train station he knew was nearby, he had to finish his preparations before Kallen and her friends arrived.
Elsewhere in a place known as Saitama Ghetto, Maya, now wearing civilian attire, featuring a black skirt, a matching vest over a gray vest, a long-sleeve white button shirt with a yellow tie and a black shoulder cape, and white leggings attached to black straps with black heel shoes. In her arms were the bags she brought from Ashford Academy, having hurried back home to change out of her school uniform since being recognized as a Britannian Student could invite its own issues.
She was a half-Britannian, Maya had a Japanese father and a Britannian mother, who fled from Britannia to live in Japan to escape her life there. Meeting her father, getting married and eventually having her as a result of their happy marriage, until…
"Hey big sis Maya is here," a little girl shouted happily, shaking Maya from her thoughts.
A group of young children led by a little girl with black hair styled into a pair of pigtails, with red eyes wearing old and tattered clothes including a white dress worn over a tan shirt with a black shirt under it and shorts complete with mismatched sandals. The other children joining in greeting Maya were of a similar age with one girl with long brown hair tied into a ponytail a brown shirt with dark pants and a boy with long brown hair wearing a faded red shirt with dark blue pants with worn shoes, who happily greeted Maya.
"Is everyone here?" Maya inquired as she shifted her arms to better hold onto the bag.
"Well Ako and Yuu had some customers, so they said they'll be late. Mari, and Tomo are here through," The girl with red eyes replied.
"I see, well I got plenty to go around as always,"
"Yay," Hina and the other children celebrated.
Maya smiled lightly, but deep inside she was conflicted.
She always would remember how she found these children by chance more than a year ago, so using her status as a Britannian she would bring them food and medicine to help them. However, Maya regretted she couldn't take these children away from this ghetto, but she lacked the means to do so. Part of why Maya helped these children, orphans who had lost their families during the invasion seven years ago, came together in this ghetto surviving together, was because it reminded her of how she lost her family during the invasion.
Maya had to live on her own as a child, in a country that went from an independent nation to a colony under the dominion of Britannia, to say living on her own on whatever she could find to survive was anything but easy.
However, lucky for Maya she was found by one of her mother's old friends a few years after Japan became Area 11. The woman who took in came from Britannia, adopting her as her own child to give her a home. As far as anyone knew she was that Britannian's daughter, likely having paid off the right people for the false identity she had. However her intentions were genuine as she wished to care for Maya thanks to her friendship with Maya's mother.
Maya was grateful of course as she enjoyed far better living conditions than before, but seeing these orphans reminded her of what she had lost and the lie she had to live to survive.
This is all just useless self-gratification, I am just a powerless child who can only give these kids food to survive a few more days, Maya thought.
Every time Maya came these thoughts would enter her mind, yet she didn't understand why she kept doing it knowing it was just useless self-gratification.
"Hey big sis, are you alright?" Hina asked. "You seem tried, are you ok?"
"I am fine, I am just sorry I couldn't do more for you."
"But you do so much for us already?!" Tomo interjected.
"Yeah you bring food for kids like us who lost their moms and dads during the war," Mari added.
"When I am big enough to work, I want to pay you back for it okay?"
Maya was unsure of how to respond, mostly because didn't know what kind of work they did, Ako and Yuu never spoke of it, so that raised some worrying questions.
"Big sis?" Hina asked, worried.
"You've already paid me back, just look," Maya said, reaching for the origami crane, but soon realized she didn't have it on her.
Oh no, what happened…did I drop it?
Maya began to panic as she started searching her pockets for it, cursing internally for not noticing it earlier when she changed clothes. She had been in such a hurry she might've left it behind at home.
"Big sis did you misplace that origami crane I made you, you've been carrying it around with you?" Hina asked, seemingly worried.
"Yes I treasured it, but, I…I…"
"Its ok big sis," Hina said reassuringly. "I am sure you just forgot it at home, you were in a hurry weren't you?"
"I suppose so, but I'll tell you what I'll bring you all some colored paper next time. I would like to learn how to fold one," Maya said, regretting misplacing Hina's gift.
"Sure thing," Hina replied happily, easing Maya's guilty conscience somewhat.
I'll just retrace my steps later once I get home, I am sure I can find it, Maya thought.
Around the same time in the government headquarters in the heart of Tokyo, Jeremiah Gottwald, joined by his two most trusted subordinates Villetta Nu and a man around the same age with short orange hair and blue eyes wearing a gray uniform. Both stood off to the side while Jeremiah sat behind an ornate desk, until the new Viceroy arrived he would be acting consul for the time being to maintain order.
Before him stood a man in his early thirties with long blonde hair tied into a small ponytail with blue eyes wearing a red turtleneck, a light blue coat and pants. The man stood at attention, wondering why he had been called to the office of the consul, but all he knew it was important and his bosses at the studio had only told him the consul wanted their best producer for a job they needed him for.
That told him there was something big in the works, but for now he kept quiet.
"I must say, you handled his highness's memorial program impressively well given your limited time frame. But I confess it was a little too weepy from my taste."
"The audience do always enjoy a tear-jerker, your excellency," Diethard Reid replied frankly.
Jeremiah smiled, "spoken like a true man of television, which makes the finesse you've shown in handling his highness's memorial program nothing short of remarkable. More so since you had just little time to do it, in fact I almost dare say you had been prepared for it."
"It's not uncommon for memorial programs to be prepared in advance, at least to some degree, for important people your excellency," Diethard replied professionally.
"How straightforward of you, would that include me as well?" Jeremiah asked, half-jokingly.
"Recent events might've moved you up on the list, your excellency," Diethard answered with a respectful bow.
"I wasn't deemed important enough until now, how honest of you," Jeremiah complimented.
"I am afraid so sir."
"Ever thought of enlisting," Jeremiah offered. "The army could use more men like you, a man like you could do well in the intelligence division I imagine."
"Thank you for the offer sir, but I doubt it would be a good fit for me," Diethard said, politely declining the suggestion.
"I see so you prefer your current work then, well no matter. I have a favor of you, one that is ideally suited for someone as capable as yourself," Jeremiah began adopting a more serious expression. "Tomorrow night Suzaku Kururugi will be transferred to his court-martial."
Diethard's eyes narrowed, "We should line the highway with good patriotic Britannians."
Jeremiah smiled, this made it much easier for him.
"Excellent you catch on very quick," Jeremiah said, turning to Villetta. "I want everyone to see Kururugi's face."
"Pardon Lord Jeremiah, I should caution you as the son of the last Prime Minister, many Elevens view Kururugi as a hero and may attempt to free him," Villetta cautioned.
"I am expecting such an attempt, which is why I am leaving all security preparations to you, I want you to make sure everything at the courthouse is prepared for his arrival. I want every precaution made to ensure no one will attempt such a thing," Jeremiah said with a fierce determination in his eyes. "Lord Kewell, I would like you to handle things along the highway, I want Knightmare Frames to be ready to deploy on my command, and work with Mr. Reid on any other preparations so they don't conflict with our security preparations."
"Yes sir," Kewell and Villetta said together.
"I'll personally be traveling with Kuruguri's escort aboard my Sutherland, make sure it's clear that if
anyone causes trouble they will be executed on the spot," Jeremiah said, turning to Diethard.
"Understood your excellency," Diethard said with a bow.
Sometime later aboard a train traveling along the edges of the Tokyo Settlement, Kallen was aboard surrounded by people, while Oghi and his friends were nearby. They had boarded the train as Zero instructed them, but so far no sign of the man himself, and Kallen was beginning to get irritated.
Even more so when he suddenly called her.
"What is it now?" Kallen asked, picking up the phone.
"I want you to look towards the front of the train then look to the right, tell me what you see?" Lelouch asked on the phone, Kallen saw the pristine Tokyo Settlement as its building stood tall and was in near new condition.
"The Britannian City, stolen from us along with everything when Britannia conquered Japan seven years ago. It stands as a reminder of what we have lost," Kallen answered.
"Good and to your left?"
"Our city," Kallen said, looking out to the ruined cityscape of a ghetto. "The remains of what Japan used to be before Britannia came and destroyed it all, taking whatever is left."
"Very good, now head to the front of the train," Lelouch replied before hanging up.
Kallen began making her way to the front of the train, followed by Ohgi and the others. The people of the train paid them no heed, thanks to Lelouch's Geass and other preparations ensuring no one would bother them at the front of the train.
After all, first impressions were important.
It took Kallen and her friends a few minutes to reach the front as most of the passengers, under the influence of Lelouch's Geass, crowded the other cars of the train ensuring they would have the front to themselves.
When Kallen and her friends arrived they found a lone figure waiting for them with his back turned to them. From what they could see he wore some kind of helmet, or mask, with a black cape and a high collar.
"Well was that you on the phone, and the voice during Shinjuku?" Kallen demanded, but wordlessly Lelouch turned around.
Lelouch was indeed wearing a black mask with no visible eyeholes, the rest of his outfit was hidden by the black cape wrapped around his body.
"Hey, we are talking to you," Yoshida demanded.
"What did you think of my tour of the settlement," Lelouch began, his voice electronically disguised with a booming echo to help mask it.
"Your tour," Oghi asked.
"No way the guy at Shinjuku was this joker," Yoshida said, turning to Oghi.
"I wanted you all to grasp the differences between Britannia and the Ghetto," Lelouch said, as he extended his arms one at a time, revealing under the cape he wore a one-piece purple body suit lined with gold and a white cravat, integrated heeled boots, and black gloves.
Ohgi understood the message Zero was trying to get across so he stepped forward, "We are aware of the difference between them and us, a very harsh and unforgiving one. That is why we fight to resist them."
"You're wrong, Britannia will not fall to mere terrorism," Lelouch declared, catching Ohgi by surprise, it was not something he was expecting the masked man before him to declare. "Its nothing more than childish games, which will ultimately change nothing in the end."
"What, are you calling us kids," Yoshida snapped, clearly insulted.
"You must know your real enemy, and its Britannia itself, so you must take up your swords. Instead of the innocent you must fight Britannia, fight for justice!" Lelouch declared.
"Oh come on, you can't expect us to just accept it. It must be so easy hiding behind that mask," Kallen said, snapping.
"Yeah, lose the mask," Yoshida said, agreeing with Kallen.
"Very well, I'll show, but instead of my face I'll prove myself through my actions. If I accomplish the impossible will that earn your trust instead? Like my actions speak for themselves," Lelouch offered.
"How do you plan to do that?" Ohgi asked, being the level-headed of the group.
"I intend to rescue Suzaku Kurugui, but for that I do need help. Meet me here, on this map, and bring anyone you can. I'll explain my plan in more detail then," Lelouch offered, showing a map with a red X marking a junkyard near Shinjuku. "Meet me there at sundown with whoever believes I can accomplish this, all I need is just a few hands to assist me."
"A few hands, this guy is nuts," Yoshida exclaimed. "Just think about how tight the security is going to be?!"
"Rest assured I have a plan for that," Lelouch replied, confident.
Ohgi might've agreed, but there was something that convinced him that maybe it wouldn't hurt to meet Zero at the location to hear his plan out.
Hours later, Lelouch had returned to Ashford Academy, the afternoon was an exhausting one, but while he had hoped to convince more of Ohgi's resistance group to join him, the outcome was better than he had expected.
So only Kallen and Ohgi agreed to help me, more would've been better, but those two will be enough, Lelouch thought, sneaking back into his room.
Upon dropping the bag containing his Zero suit and mask, Lelouch sat in his desk's chair to relax and rest.
Opening the soft drink he had taken from the kitchen on his way to his room, Lelouch drank most of its contents before putting the opened can down on his desk.
Things could've turned out better, but at least a worst-case scenario was avoided.
Lelouch couldn't blame them for their skepticism, since all he had was his accomplishment in Shinjuku Ghetto, hardly enough to win the trust of strangers you want to fight for you. At worse Lelouch had expected they could react violently and attack him, and besides Kallen he would've had Ohgi and the others attack Kallen and kill her if the situation demanded before having Ohgi and the others kill themselves.
Thankfully it didn't come to that, while Ohgi and the others were questionable on what they could offer, Kallen's skills in a Knightmare Frame were beyond the norm. She would be invaluable for the fight against Britannia, knowing his half-sister Cornelia and the Knights of the Round were all highly skilled Knightmare Frame pilots. Knowing conflict with them was inevitable at some point, having someone who could match their skills in a Knightmare Frame would be a boon for him.
I'll be lucky if I could find more people like her, Lelouch thought before turning on his desk lamp, the light shining over the blue origami crane Maya had dropped earlier.
Looking at the crane Lelouch picked it up to inspect it.
Other than Nunnally and Sayoko making some recently, I think it was almost seven years ago when I last saw one, Lelouch mused, recalling more pleasant memories.
Holding to the light Lelouch noticed something, it appeared to be a message written inside the crane.
Carefully unfolding it, Lelouch opened it, his curiosity got the better of him, to find a message written in Japanese.
Lelouch was surprised, making him wonder if Maya was half-Britannian like Kallen or maybe was close to someone who was Japanese, likely a child judging by the message. It might've been written in Japanese, but Lelouch had learned to read and speak Japanese while in Japan before the invasion.
Suddenly a noise outside interrupted his thoughts, looking out his window he saw Maya, looking for something. It seemed Maya had tripped on something and fell into some bushes.
I guess this is a good chance to return this, Lelouch thought, carefully folding the paper back into a crane, so no one would know he glanced at the message inside.
I couldn't find it at home, how could I not notice I dropped it, a panicking Maya thought as she had searched everywhere after returning home.
Suddenly footsteps drew her attention, as Lelouch approached.
"Are you looking for this by any chance?"
Maya's eyes widened to see the crane in Lelouch's hand.
"Relax I didn't tell anyone about it, I assume you didn't want anyone to know you have an origami crane," Lelouch said, knowing that some students, especially among the strictly
traditional Britannian families would harass her for having a
barbarian trinket or something moronic.
"You know what it is?" Maya said, lowering her guard.
"Yes, I was in Japan before the invasion happened, so I've seen them before. My sister had taken an interest in them, which I would appreciate if you kept it to yourself," Lelouch asked kindly, knowing Maya would understand.
"Of course," Maya replied, accepting the crane back from Lelouch. "Did I drop it after talking to you?"
"Yes, I tried to tell you but you ran away very fast. I couldn't find you afterwards, so I thought during the next student council meeting when you arrive I would give it to you then," Lelouch replied.
"How did you know I was out here looking," Maya asked, pocketing the crane.
"My room is below the brush you fell in," Lelouch pointed to where his room was in the Student Council building.
"You don't live in the dorms?"
"No, me and my sister stay in the Student Council Clubhouse as a favor from the headmaster. My sister is wheelchair bound and blind, and because the dorms cannot accommodate her needs we stay here instead," Lelouch answered.
"Oh I see," Maya replied, having not been aware of that.
"Yes, so will likely see my sister from time to time, even if she is in the middle school section."
"I look forward to it," Maya said.
"I trust you will come to the student council meeting once school is back in session. School is out for a couple days, but I am sure everyone will be eager to meet you soon enough."
"Of course I look forward to it," Maya said, before looking at the watch. "I should head home, thank you again for finding this for me. I could repay you sometime."
"No need, I'll just call it my good deed for the week," Lelouch replied with a smile as the two had a good laugh. "Take care on your way home Miss Gradfield."
"Sure, but you can call me Maya, its fine."
"Of course, Maya, good night," Lelouch said before returning to his room, and Maya, relieved she got Hina's origami crane back, headed home herself.
Meanwhile in a prison cell in the government complex at the heart of Tokyo, Suzaku sat in a cell, alone, wearing a white straightjacket with his arms tightly bound. His face was covered in bruises, all the result of his interrogators presenting false evidence and his refusing to give a
confession, or at least one they wanted to hear. Suzaku was grateful they retired for the day, giving him a reprieve from the beatings, but soon a familiar face arrived at his cell.
"Well hello there, still alive eh Private Kururugi," Lloyd replied, dragging a folding chair, unfolding it to sit before Suzaku's cell.
"Mr. Lloyd, nice to see a friendly face," Suzaku said, grateful, as eccentric Lloyd was, he was welcomed company especially after his time spent with his interrogators.
"I see they have been quite rough on you, but we both know you are innocent. I've tried my best to reach my esteemed patron in the homeland, but sadly he is on his way to a summit so communicating with him has been problematic. He's sometimes harder to reach than the Emperor," Lloyd said with an exhausted, defeated look.
"I appreciate the effort Mr. Lloyd, I just don't understand why I would be accused when it's obvious I was in the Lancelot when this happened?"
"Sadly you are being used as a scapegoat, apparently they couldn't find Prince Clovis's killer, so the Purebloods are using you to clear the way for them to shut down natives of Areas to gain Honorary Status. Not likely to work if I am being honest for reasons I won't bore you with, but its all a show to ease the people the murder has been caught, nothing more," Lloyd answered. "If the killer remained uncaught it would look bad for everyone when the new Viceroy shows up, if nothing else I suspect they are also hoping to bait whoever killed Clovis to rescue you, if they are lucky."
"I see…"
"But I do have some good news at least, those two you asked me about," Lloyd replied with a smile. "I am happy to say they were not on the casualty list."
Suzaku was relieved once again, that was at least some good news.
"Thank you for that, I appreciate it."
"Yes, but it doesn't look good for you. You'll get a trial, but the verdict is all but decided for you unless I can reach his highness before it happens."
"I see, I am grateful for all you have done for me Lloyd, so thank you whatever happens."
"Well don't resign yourself to the gallows just yet, you got lucky once, maybe lady luck will favor you again."
Suzaku smiled, "well lightning never strikes the same place twice, but I guess we'll see."
The next evening, Maya was at home, watching television laying in bed with her head turned towards the television. Unfortunately every channel had been hijacked to televise Suzaku's transport to the courthouse for his sentencing, which even Maya recognized was all but decided.
What a farce, Maya said, grabbing a pillow before burying her face in it.
"I see them, they are coming this way! They have the suspect! Suzaku Kururugi is headed this way!" A television announcer declared as on the screen the military transport with Suzaku on top being paraded as someone being led to the gallows, flanked by a few Sutherlands, changing to a overhead view of crowds shouting at Suzaku. "You can just hear them, their scorn, and anger, wanting to see judgment rendered for the man who killed a people's beloved prince."
"A man who couldn't design a decent swimsuit, no sane woman would be caught dead in one of his designs," Maya muttered.
"Margrave Jeremiah, integral in settling this case, will be presiding over the trial as acting consul," the announce noted as a close up of Jeremiah standing outside the cockpit of his Sutherland could be seen.
"What a circus, maybe I should just play a video game or something," Maya said, reaching her limit with the circus performance on television.
But as she was about to turn off the television to play a game on her computer, something unexpected happened.
The military convoy suddenly came to a complete stop, shocking the announcer even.
"Oh what is going on now? Now we're getting a live performance with monkeys or something," Maya said scornfully.
"This is not a scheduled stop, hold on a moment," the announce said, before seemingly talking to someone off mic. "Wait, we have another vehicle approaching directly ahead of the convoy, its…its Prince Clovis's personal transport!"
"Huh?!" Maya wasn't sure what to make of it.
Approaching the convoy was a white large limo, with the diver sitting in an open top, while the rest of the limo was enlarged back, which was an usual design choice that just made it stand out too much. It soon came to a stop before the convoy with Jeremiah clearly livid.
"How dare you steal his highness's personal transport, whoever you are, get out of it NOW!"
Instead the Britannian Flag along with part of the front behind the driver, burned away revealing a platform where Lelouch, wearing the mask and attire of Zero stood with the black cape draped around his body.
"I am Zero," Lelouch declared.
"Zero," Maya questioned, wondering if this was some elaborate performance.
"Just who is this masked man, called Zero. Standing before a full military convoy, if he is a terrorist then he isn't the wisest that much is sure," the announcer declared.
"Alright this show is over Zero," Jeremiah declared, firing his pistol into the air, signaling the deployment of four more Sutherlands from VTOL transport hovering in the sky nearby, surrounding Prince Clovis's personal transport. "First, take off that mask!"
At first Lelouch reached for his mask to remove it, before snapping his fingers causing the rest of the upper half of the limo to fall away revealing a strange sphere-like device.
"Is…that some kind of bomb?" Maya asked, her eyes widened at the unknown device.
"Are all of you at home seeing this, the transport was hiding some kind of device. Its purpose is unclear, but let's see what this terrorist has to say," the announcer said, who was just as confused as Maya was about the unusual device.
Jeremiah clearly broke into a cold sweat, aiming his gun at Zero.
"You intend to shoot me, if you miss and hit this thing the results won't be pretty, and if you hit me consider what might happen," Lelouch warned.
Jeremiah's face was full of anger, but he lowered his weapon.
"Fine, what are your demands then?"
"A simple exchange, this for Kuruguri," Zero replied.
"You're insane, besides I can't hand him over. He's wanted for high treason for killing a member of the Royal Family, I just can't hand him over to you," Jeremiah answered, barely restraining his anger.
"No Jeremiah, you are mistaken, we both know he didn't kill Prince Clovis. You framed him just so you could end the practice of granting Honorary Status to people born in the Areas like the Japanese in Japan, especially when you couldn't catch the real killer, who was
ME," Lelouch declared, turning to face a bold cameraman who went out to get a closer shot of the exchange.
He's the real killer, Maya thought, she was suspicious of Suzaku being the killer as he seemed like a convenient high profile suspect who from what she read was just a grunt in the Britannian Army. Meaning, how the heck did he get close to Clovis to kill him?
"What," the announcer said, just as shocked as Maya was. "Did you all just hear that, this masked man Zero, has just announced that he's the real assassin. So where does this leave Suzaku Kuruguri?"
"For saving scores of Britannians for a single
innocent Japanese, I call that a bargain," Zero said, adding more salt that he just exposed the Pureblood's lie on live television, no doubt causing Lelouch to grin under his mask.
"How is he going to get out of that, he's screwed," Maya wondered.
"He's insane I tell you, he'll pay dearly for mocking the crown!" Jeremiah said, losing all self-control over his anger.
The Sutherlands surrounding Lelouch raised their weapons, ready to fire.
"Careful, you don't want the public to learn of Orange do you?"
"Huh," everyone and Maya exclaimed.
Zero tapped his foot, on the transport, the vehicle began moving closer to Jeremiah's Knightmare Frame.
"If I die it will all go public, so if you don't want that to happen," Lelouch was saying as a panel in his mask opened revealing his Geass-empowered eye, unseen by everyone watching at home and those present watching events unfold. "You'll do everything in your power to let us escape with your prisoner!"
Except for its intended target, Jeremiah.
"Understood," Jeremiah's tone had changed completely, much to the shock of everyone watching. "You there, release the prisoner!"
"What," Maya exclaimed in shock, although she wasn't the only one who shared that same thought.
"I can't tell what is happening, but it appears to be that a deal was reached for Kuruguri's release," the announce replied as Maya watched in stunned silence as Suzaku was released from his bonds to meet Zero as he and the driver of the transport met in-between Jeremiah's Sutherland and the transport itself.
"Very well, until next time," Zero declared, pulling out a remote he had hidden, pushing a button, causing the sphere-like device to quickly release a cloud of purple-colored smoke blanking the bridge, causing people to panic.
One of the Sutherlands tried to attack them, but Jeremiah immediately stopped it, attacking his own men much to Maya's surprise who was left in stunned silence. Maya watched the chaotic scene for a few more minutes, but despite some shots being fired, it seemed Zero had escaped with Suzaku along with the driver of the transport.
"What the hell just happened, did that guy in the mask pull off saving Suzaku?"
Later that same evening, hiding in an abandoned theater in Shinjuku Ghetto, Lelouch felt pleased with himself. Despite being worried a few times, his plan worked to perfection, although he did consider using what he gleaned from Clovis about his secret project with the girl, but he lacked sufficient information to use it. But, it did give him an idea for Orange, which he was sure would cause division in the ranks of the Britannias for some time.
In hindsight, maybe I should've questioned Clovis more about his project and the Emperor's interest in the girl, Lelouch thought, but he had a more pressing matter to address.
"I see they treated you very roughly Suzaku," Zero said, as he and Suzaku were alone in one of the ruined theaters with much of its back wall having collapsed a few years ago. "You've seen Britannia's true colors, so if you desire true change, Private Kururugi, then join me!"
"Is it true, are you the one who killed Prince Clovis?"
"This is war Private Kururugi," Zero replied. "Why wouldn't I kill an enemy commander, one who ordered the deaths of countless women and children just to protect his reputation? Do you think those who died because of his command deserved justice, whose only mistake was just being Japanese and living in a ghetto."
Suzaku was unable to offer a counter argument, but instead.
"And the gas, those were innocent civilians?"
"As if I would gas innocent people," Lelouch said, sounding insulted. "It was a bluff and the sphere was nothing more than an overly glorified smoke bomb to cover our escape. My plan worked out perfectly, and not a single innocent death."
"I see, are results all that matter to you then?"
"Come with me, Britannia is rotten to the core, if you want to change this world!" Lelouch asked once more, extending his hand to Suzaku.
"Maybe so, but this nation can be changed for the better, from within."
"What," Lelouch said as his brain actually stopped functioning for a brief moment. "From, within?"
"Yes," Suzaku replied.
"It will fail Kurugui, you're a Japanese, a private in Britannia, a country that legalizes discrimination against non-Britannians. The only way you could change Britannia is to become Emperor, and have most of the nobility and the royal family behind you, which is highly unlikely as they benefit too much from the corrupt system built around them," Lelouch said, trying to contain his disbelief and anger at the ludicrous belief that Britannia could be changed from within.
If this was almost any other country, that could work, Lelouch thought, but because its Britannia, Suzaku's efforts would only get him killed.
"As a Japanese you'll never achieve your ends, you'll either be corrupted by the system or destroyed by it," Lelouch warned.
"You're probably right, but will your methods achieve better results?"
"Perhaps," Zero replied, but he was more confident in his response. "At least mines will have more of a chance, given time."
"At the cost of lives?"
"Its unfortunate, but Britannia's hands aren't clean either, how many have died to them?"
"I guess we're at an impasse, but I suppose if I don't succeed maybe you can pick up where I left off hopefully," Suzaku said before walking away.
"Wait, where are you going?"
"My court-martial will begin in one hour, if I leave now I could make it," Suzaku answered.
"Are you insane, the verdict is already set in stone, they are just giving you a trial just as a show!" Lelouch said, his emotions getting better of him.
"Maybe, but you know as well as I do if I don't go they'll just use it as an excuse to crack down on Elevens and Honorary Britannians," Suzaku pointed out.
"Don't be an idiot!"
"You know, you remind me of an old friend who would say that, but maybe I am just a fool I suppose. Its just who I am I guess," Suzaku said, turning around to look at Zero. "I would try to bring you in, but you would just kill me. Still I thank you, for saving me."
With those words Suzaku left, leaving a stunned and furious Lelouch seething at the one part of his plan that failed.
That…that…fool!
A/N: Whew and Zero has entered the game.
I had wanted to change much of the original events surrounding Zero's debut, but I was convinced by Greatkingrat88 to leave it as is. I had only wanted to change it out of fear of the whole thing coming off as a copy and paste of events. So Instead I decided to change a few things, expand on a few other things while deciding to do the whole event surrounding Zero's Debut to happen from Maya's perspective.
Next chapter will deal with the fallout of that night while Lelouch will plan his next moves.
Thanks for reading, see you guys next chapter.
