Cosmos Quest (Naruto/Lupin III)

YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!

Now that's more like it. Although you missed some red with Lupin, now we've straight up got another person in our head.

You got really meta in this update though.

So....rest of the Fab Four? Are they gonna be this life-like? Zenigata apparently isn't progressing that fast, but Lupin just jumped right in.

We apparently did unlock a load of our past life knowledge though, if we're remembering stuff like this.

Also, Ain't No Rest For the Wicked. I'll refrain from just Googling everything else.

Also, why hello there treasure trove of gunsmithing knowledge and all else modern, what are you doing here with your perfect memory and lifetime of experience?

In the long term? Yeah, pretty close, but not quite. And only because you have a complete set of memories to draw on now. For the duration of the quest they're likely to be limited in a lot of ways; with Lupin you get to cheat because he's legitimately you, but effectively modelling real people completely, to the point of granting them their own awareness, is something that's never been done with the Throne before.

Now that, I'm good with. Good thing we went with Lupin, he really is the lynchpin to taking this a step further. And we have an in to his knowledge. So we'll get close but never all the way there cause they aren't us.

I'm good with that. We got a big cheat with Lupin, but we can't say the same for everyone else.

So should we just treat Lupin as something of a split personality? And now we're schizophrenic.

Well, we'll just tell people we're a Yamanaka. :p

And something tells me our Fujiko is going to be the most distorted of all of our constructs.

Last question: now that Lupin is fully realize in his head, can we make the guy help us and do work for us? Figure stuff out? Like, we're doing one thing, Lupin is planning and scheming in our head, or otherwise working out the details. Maybe even training time? Having him do the work for making Goemon, Jigen, and Fujiko seems appropriate, if he can do it.

Final thing: we need to make Zenigata capable of ferreting out Itachi's geas in our own mind. We're probably not gonna come up with anyone better for finding and ripping out ever damned trace of the thing. :p

And....holy crap, that idea about a Construct taking control of our body while we use Shitenshin?

That just became viable. We can put us or Lupin in someone, and going by that description of Throne Furiko wrote, only Lupin could move and control our body. Maybe a construct could control someone else, MAYBE, but Lupin's probably now gonna be the best.

That's actually pretty awesome.

Anyone else want to try cheating by Shintenshining a friend or someone otherwise way better than us, put Lupin in the pilot's seat of one of the bodies, and claim this is totally legit cause we're now controlling two bodies?

....Nah, this is actually an even better infiltration tool than the mask because our body is no longer the vulnerable point. This is seriously fucking awesome. I am very interested to see how high our rating in Throne is now. And I'm guessing our Unique Perspective is now maxed, because we have Lupin himself in here.

Man we shoulda done this sooner. So glad we put the time into Throne as it is. This is a massive payoff. Quite possibly the best thing we've gotten out of our training.

Yes, yes, yes, maybe, and yes, but two heads are better than one with the whole let's-get-our-friends-back thing.

Fair enough, fair enough. Don't suppose Lupin will be helping with Zenigata before we hit the prelims?

Lessee....Shintenshin just got a big bump in potential usefulness, three other people to make, and mental static to make our head suck worse for everyone else. Maybe even passive genjutsu defense thanks to mental static?

Lots to learn here and it is suddenly so much more promising. I'll bet making guns and whatnot also took a hit in time needed and quality made, the lack of precision tools available not withstanding. Poisons to live up Konoha's Poisonous Blossom, Ranton, (although truthfully probably the least narratively satisfying project to me even if it does have great returns), and maybe grab for fuinjutsu based tricks.

Oh, and perhaps Koto playing for making sweet music with Gaara and genjutsu. Who knows, showing of international musical talent in the finals may even be good publicity for starting a career! And in doing so have an in to all sorts of places for entertainment. Assuming they trust us despite being a ninja.

Also, I'd have to check, but I think Dante may have made Ebony and Ivory himself....or someone made the pieces for him and he put them together. It was in the novels I think? I'd have to check, I only have second-hand info. If so, that could be an interesting past time with Gaara.

A rock off is both an awesome idea which will give you international ins to the wider shinobi world and the quickest way to make sure everyone who's anyone knows Henge no Ino the Poisonous Blossom plays the koto. It'll mean if you want to take infiltration missions as a musician people will be more likely to be guarded from the get-go.

Yes we do; ask the GM.
And our specialization, the thing we are best at, is Constructs.
Leverage it.

no matter how could our constructs are, unless we can actually bring them to our enemies (in our very next fight) or bring our enemies to them, then its useless.

Can we really drag people into our mind?

We only just learned how to use the most basic of our clan techniques, how do we already know one of the advanced forms?

Is our mind safe enough to not make this a fucking terrible idea? (I'd go with "maybe" against everything except Gaara, against whom it would be pure suicide)

we can't use Genjutsu from the Koto anyway, best not to play here.

wait, how the fuck does that work?

There are literally two Jutsu in the entire Naruto-verse that can do what you just described.

One is the Yamanaka Clan techniques, which is a powerful bloodline, and the other is tsukuyomi, which is currently usable by two people in the entire world. tops.

Both rely on bloodlines, and neither are "really" Genjutsu.

How the hell are random two bit Genjutsu specializing Gennin going to start magically recreating these sorts of techniques?

Is Genjutsu something completely different in this quest? because in Canon its the art of fooling the senses and casting illusions.
If being good enough at it would just let you step into someone's Mindscape/Inner-World/Soul/Reality-marble/whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-it then why exactly does our clan even exist?

It's fine to use it on anyone who can't handle Zenigata, Lupin, and an army of Sasukes. That's what these things are for. Plus what appears to be a firewall, though that could've just been Lupin.

posted that question before I saw the "lol lupin is here" update.

now we have him here, our mind is probably safe from most Genin.

still not banking on Gaara though.

drawing Jinjuriki into our soul sounds like a really fucking bad idea.

First of all, why do you think it's a good idea to argue with the GM? You're already in an AU, after all.

Second of all, genjutsu works by reaching out to the mind of the person you're casting on and playing tricks on it; sending false signals through the brain via their chakra pathways. While that means that genjutsu takes less of the caster's chakra to function than ninjutsu, you still have to put in some in order to make the mechanism work.

And you just set up an investigator construct specifically to look for those traces of chakra and bring them to your attention. Once brought to your attention, you can either expel them, or, if you like your chances, you can pull them into the dream complex between your palaces.

Oh. Ohohohohohohooooo. Hymn is scheming, and Hymn my have a brilliant idea.

But first, Hymn has some questions. About the details of summoning scrolls and Lupin.

What REALLY matters with the scroll one signs to? Blood, chakra, does even the name of the signer have significance?

Can one be signed to more than one contract? Like Sasuke having access at several points in time to two tribes, or is that non-canon here, or Orochimaru shenanigans or something?

Do Lupin and Ino, despite being one person....count as separate beings?

Imagine, if you will, Lupin finding out that Ino can summon back-up as long as she has the chakra. Or that if someone without a contract does the signs, they get teleported to their most compatible tribe.

Lupin immediately thinks that's awesome and that he's gotta try this/wants to find out what his tribe is.

Ino is too late to stop him.

Poof! Suddenly they're in the land of monkeys, Lupin's most compatible tribe.

"Ino, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore..."

" I'd slap you but I'd only be hurting myself."

So, if the name matters and Lupin is distinct enough that he can do his own reverse summoning, it would be friggin' awesome to weasel word past the rules of tribes and contracts so that Ino has her best tribe, and now Lupin has his. The rest of the world is wondering what the fuck is going on.

Of course, if we want our Housecat clan and spy network to be secret, this is a pretty good way to keep them so on an international stage.

Incidentally, if this does happen, I think I have a way to fleece the pants off Enma. Publicly. It would be glorious, I promise you.

No questions for the guy? Lots of people seem to only read the updates, not the ancillary notes, so it might be helpful for settling arguments for me to answer in-character as often as makes sense.

Several people in canon have multiple summoning contracts, so you can definitely sign more than one. But once you're signed to a contract, like you did with the Housecats, you can't reverse summon yourself to the animals who suit you best anymore, because you signed in chakra and blood, so now you're innately connected to the Tora contract. If you want the monkey contract, you'll have to either steal it from the Sarutobi or convince the Hokage to let you sign it.

One being, separate people. Vishnu is both Krishna and Rama, but Krishna and Rama are different people.

Oh, that's on the table? Hmm. Okay, need to think more, hopefully this doesn't get abused....well asking Lupin what he can do seems premature. He probably needs to figure out what he's capable of in there too.

Just ask for general advice, him to hit any high notes he hasn't already hit?

Maybe we can get some hand to hand tutoring from ourselves, Lupin's style is probably for a bigger person but he's also probably a grandmaster of the Art of the Harmonious Spirit. And as crappy as we are, he's unlikely to have been worse.

From the way Lupin talks it sounds like he already knows everything we know so no need to fill him in.

Several people in canon have multiple summoning contracts, so you can definitely sign more than one.

Alright then, wasn't sure that would hold over.

Aw, awwwwwww, so we already could have had an opportunity to have both? Oh well. Something to aspire to I suppose. Although stealing our way onto the contract may attract heat, but the monkeys are a playful sort so maybe they'd think anyone who can sneak onto the contract deserves to be there.

One being, separate people. Vishnu is both Krishna and Rama, but Krishna and Rama are different people.

Or, if you prefer, Korra is Aang, but...

But not different enough to do his own Reverse Summoning, I getcha. Oh well.

...And man, with what you've said about Throne, if we get our constructs and mental static up we really will be a BEAST in genjutsu. As soon as we start making our own, more versatile stuff. Or see if Kurenai will pass on a few more, like Tree Binding Death. We are now in the one-on-one version and a Paralyze B-Rank jutsu in our hands would be pretty nice....

Lupin knows savate and general fuckery, yeah. He (was) competent, but he (was) real-world-adult-male competent, not jounin-female competent. He could get you up to where you need to be chuunin-wise, but that's the extent of what he can do for you on the punchy-kicky front, and it's likely to take up two slots if you want it done in time for the finals.

Chunin level isn't all that bad, given where we're at now. We are a bit of an embarrassment for sucking so much there, Anko's not wrong to call us out on our lack of competence in these areas.

But it's probably not worth the two slots it would take, not when we can get so much more bang for our buck elsewhere. Throne, Ranton, et cetera.

....What'd be REALLY awesome is if one person can throw around genjutsu while the other person drives the body, and get our genjutsu all the way to sealless so that we're going full blown mind-to-mind fuckery, but that's probably not in the cards. I expect Lupin to not be able to use chakra like us. Although if he was, hey, False Surroundings just became a game breaker. Lay it unseen on someone, and while Ino does what Ino does Lupin is personally directing the genjutsu to play everyone like fools.

It's a minor medical conundrum that no one's really been able to work out; you have stamina way beyond anyone you know short of Chouji's dad, and even entering puberty and sleeping for longer hours (mostly in the morning, to your mother and Ami's mutual chagrin), you aren't terribly clumsy or easily fatigued... and yet, you have no more chakra than a normal genin without your stamina. You're like a house without insulation; you only retain the excess chakra you produce half or a quarter as efficiently as a normal person.
Huh.
I wonder how many specialists she's had to see over this; when you're breeding a mage warrior, this kinda thing becomes important.
And I wonder how many people now are poring over her DNA.

No wonder he's not fussed.

The only reason it's noteworthy in your case is that you have an elemental kekkei genkai. Well, no matter; that's unexplored territory for you for now, there's no way you'd be able to rig something up in the next four days without examining Anko, and to be honest, the day you'd rather examine a curse mark on a gorgeous young woman than her other qualities is the day you lie down and die.
Wait, what?
THAT's within her abilities?
Dearie, better keep that on the DL before Orochimaru pays a visit back into town specifically to pick you up.
Or you become of sufficient interest to get dragged down by Konoha's roots.....

Given her new bloodline, I wonder if her DNA is on file somewhere in Danzo's labs.
Seems like his thing after all; I'm betting he grabbed the bodies of the Uchiha, not Itachi.

You blink, and smile. "Really? You think that much of my skill, that I could take out the Professor?"

Well, can anyone think of any questions to ask Lupin?

I can't imagine he's especially knowledgable on capabilities, but I suppose one of the more interesting questions would be...

[ ] What happened to everyone in our first life?

Probably a long story, and potentially quite depressing because....everyone dies sooner or later. The happiest story to tell there is roughly, "I was the first to go. I died of old age and didn't have to attend their funerals. All well and good to celebrate a life well lived but going on without everyone would have sucked, no two ways about it. I think I was the lucky one, all things considered."

More jocular of course but...yeah for a group that close I can't help but think the final years where everyone either gives it up, croaks, or whatever to be pretty depressing. Sooner or later, it all ends and it hurts to watch the people you love die.

Twin Peaks, Episode 29: Beyond Life And Death.

(refuses to embed)

Those of you playing along at home, do not watch that link. It's a major spoiler and as lame as the last half of season two was, Twin Peaks should not be spoiled for anyone.

Huh.
I wonder how many specialists she's had to see over this; when you're breeding a mage warrior, this kinda thing becomes important.
And I wonder how many people now are poring over her DNA.
Well, being friends with the Nara has its advantages; they don't have that bigass medical library for nothing.

Wait, what?
THAT's within her abilities?
:notfunny:

Ino... thinks a lot of her brains. She's not wrong to, but so many things come easily to her that she doesn't have a good grasp of the reality of how difficult some things can be. She hears people say that it's hard to get as fast as she is, she hears people say that unsealing seals you didn't make yourself is hard, she hears genjutsu is hard, she hears that making medical seals is hard, and to her it sounds like the same word every time.

And you have to remember that the best fuuinjutsu, the stuff we think of when we think of how utterly broken the discipline is, is almost exclusively practised by the highest tier of the elite; there's a wide gap between storage seals and the seals that lock things up, and another gap between those and the seals that help make technology work, and a gap the size of the first two gaps put together between those and medical sealing. So there's been no real opportunity for her to see and understand just how out of her league she'd be in that branch of sealing.

Who's this?
I don't recognize the color.
Or is that Zenigata?
Yup. Tottsan gets the mod colour. XD

Huh.
I wouldn't have pegged Lupin for a gamer.
The crane machine, Pong, car racing, and I think a beat-'em-up at one point. Those are the only canonical ones I can think of, but yep, he's a casual at least.

There's time yet to try that, but I don't see you doing that with any major genjutsu. D-rank stuff at best. If this were a Sasuke quest you could totally pull that off, though; haxxigan is teh haxxest.

Damnation. False Surroundings is juuuuuuust out of our reach.

Not for the foreseeable future. It is a skill that takes time to train.

Supposing he DID learn....if we set up a False Surroundings genjutsu, then could we pass the reins to Lupin and while we do other stuff Lupin adjusts the genjutsu on the fly for us as opposed to relying on pre-set triggers?

And your talk of old ideas reminds me - hey, Guile:

Remember this? :3

*jaw drops*

It's not worth the badass Tora dying, but it's close.

Although Muin's description still has her being the Fire Lady's pet.
