The day the world changed...honestly, nobody noticed. It wasn't a large change initially, just a stretching and twisting of the natural world. Frankly, it took a while for anybody to notice anything. Oh, there were a few sightings of odd creatures and strange landscapes, but with the number of hoaxes of all varieties, nobody really paid attention.
Then the International Space Station began to de-orbit. That got attention from everybody. An international crisis of literally unprecedented scale, the world sat on the edge of their seats and watched as the ISS fell, burning like the sun until...
It stopped. In extremely low earth orbit, "Impossibly deep in the gravity well!" as the experts put it, but stopped. And when the plasma ball dissipated, the Space Station had changed. No longer did it look like something crafted by human hands (out of Legos), now it looked spiky and alien. It had been transformed into a greenish-black metal, and warped into a trio of towers, each with spires that crackled purple lightning.
It looked hostile.
And so it was quickly proven to be. As it hung over the South American continent, It suddenly activated, things that had seemed to be integral components flowing together, being welded into a whole as the towers spun faster and faster. Finally, the Space Station stopped and dropped it's load: A ten meter tall robot, loaded with alien weapons!
The robot promptly went on a rampage, taking nearly a week to stop, and inflicting heavy casualties. Then the next blow came. An old abandoned science lab in Russia underwent drastic changes, similar to the ISS becoming the Ruinous Factory, then spawned a horde of Faceless. The Faceless were weak to be sure, but there were so many of them, and they were so immediately hostile to anything human that they were a disaster almost as bad as the Ruinous Mech, and far more widespread at that!
Suddenly, the world was very interested in this new phenomenon, and teams were sent out to discover the origins of these disasters, and see if there were anymore. The news was not encouraging. Across the globe, spaces where humans were not or that had been abandoned had started to change. Places became hostile to people, spawning monsters and beasts of all descriptions, each place threatening to burst forth with a new form of disaster!
Still, not all was lost. First, it was quickly discovered that if people killed enough of the things inside a dungeon, and did it often enough, it wouldn't spawn anything too large outside it's own borders. Second was the discovery of the Insignia. For most of the population, Insignia were little more than pretty decorations. For some though, Insignia would react, and flood them with power best described as "magical". Suddenly they would become faster, stronger, and smarter than before while wearing their Insignia. More, most wounds could be healed overnight, and they would grow ever stronger the more they fought the Anomalies.
So was the current system born. The few that can activate Insignia, the Actives, go to fight in the Folds to keep the Anomalies from overrunning the world. More, they act as guardians against the Wandering Anomalies, hunting them down and killing them wherever they find them.
And that is where you come in. A sixteen year old, you just had your Insignia test, and it turns out that you're an Active!
