A Magical Girl's Trio to Kyoto I
Kyoto September 2013
Shima looked at the very regular looking house. This was a magical researcher's home? She admitted, she was sorta expecting something out of Spirited Away or some other Miyazaki film.
Not…a generic house in the suburbs of Kyoto. It had been a five hour train ride (with a ticket provided by the admiral) from Yokosuka to Kyoto. But despite refreshments being offered, she hadn't dared purchase anything. She was nervous. This magical researcher promised to be able to help her understand how her magic worked. But…wasn't that kinda dangerous?
Now she found herself in the Kyoto suburbs, having used her phone map to find her way there. Gulping, she rung the doorbell.
The door opened, revealing an elderly lady. "Can I help you?"
"H-hai! I'm Shima Isuzu! I have an appointment with…Shimazu-sama?"
The woman looked over the silver haired girl and nodded. "Come on in. And close the door behind you."
Shima nodded, entering the home and removing her shoes.
"Keep your shoes. Shimazu isn't here. But you can use our Floo to get to her."
Shima frowned but picked up her shoes. Shimazu wasn't here? Then where was she?
The woman led Shima to a fireplace, a small but crackling fire. Picking up a bag from the mantle, she handed it to Shima.
Shima stared at the bag, "Umm…"
"You've never used the Floo before?"
She was outed. "Ahh…no…I…I haven't." She admitted in shame.
"No worries. I'll show you."
A moment later, Shima stood in the fireplace, holding a pinch full of powder. "Kyoto Museum Archives!"
—-
Shima was very glad she hadn't eaten anything. The intense vertigo and dizziness nearly caused her to throw up her non existent lunch. Thankfully there was no lunch to vomit.
As she crashed onto the tiled floor before the fireplace, Shima wanted to kiss the ground, solid ground. But a voice interrupted her action.
"So…you're my magical girl?"
Shima looked up to find a woman dressed in a baggy hoodie and sweatpants. She had blue hair and large, oversized glasses. Honestly, she looked more like one of her father's animation interns instead of a magic researcher.
—-
"So you met an animated plushie that looked like an Incubator, something you knew was one of the most evil abominations in all fiction, and you took the contract anyways?"
Shima nodded, a bit ashamed. "Hai…it…it seemed like a good idea at the time."
The woman frowned as she squinted her eyes over the girl. "Well…it does seem like your soul is still in your body and not in a gem."
Shima nodded, "Hai. The Kyubey said he was a good Kyubey and wanted to help Muggles like me."
Shimazu raised her brow, "So it goes after muggles huh? Very interesting."
She led the magical girl to an open space in her laboratory, with various equipment surrounding a carefully drawn circles.
"I had this set up when I learned of your existence. This should get an accurate reading of your magic and how it functions." The woman explained, gesturing at the circle. "Go ahead and stand in the center."
Shima nodded, walking to the center.
"Good, now show me some magic."
Shima frowned. "Umm…I can't use magic unless I'm transformed."
Shimazu raised her brow, "You sure? Ok. Let's go with that for now. Transform then."
Shima focused, allowing for her clothes to transform into her white and blue robes and unfurl her white wings. "How's this?"
The woman remained motionless, her expression utterly emotionless. Shima gulped. Maybe she did something wrong.
"Umm…"
"What…"
Shima paused.
"The Fuck"
"Umm…"
"Was that?"
Shima blanked. "Ehh?"
Shimazu ran over to her instruments, frantically looking over the data it had been collecting. "You…you just transfigured your clothing completely and instantaneously. You didn't even wave a wand, make an incantation, or doing any sort of ritual. How?"
Shima frowned, she hadn't really thought about it like that. "Well…I just did it. I didn't really think about it." She shrugged.
"And that's what's even more confusing! Magic is built around rituals and following certain procedures. Even when I make a new spell, it's built around a particular set of actions that replicate a ritual. You just…transfigured your entire outfit like it was nothing."
Shima paused before speaking, "I mean…shouldn't all magical girls be able to transform? Sure I didn't have a transformation sequence but it's just natural that we can transform."
Shimazu stared at the magical girl. "…just natural?"
Shima nodded, "Hai. Magical girls transforming is just what we do right?"
The researcher frowned, "So…it's a form of self hypnosis and firm belief in your capabilities maybe? Hmm…ok. Let's move on. Show me a spell. You can use the target on the wall over there."
"H-hai!" Shima pointed her staff at the wall before sending off a pair of bolts.
Shima winced when the first bolt missed the target, hitting the section of wall beside the target. The second one hit just outside the second ring. "…I'm sorry."
Shimazu didnt seem to care, "Aether element stunning bolts. Chantless casting. I'm surprised you knew such advanced magic, but if we're going with the self belief hypothesis, it sorta makes sense. Now how about some fire spells? Or maybe water spells?"
Shima paused and frowned. "What?"
Shimazu sighed. "You can't do it?"
"I…I haven't tried."
Rolling her eyes, the researcher sighed. "I figured as much. I think I'm getting an idea of how your magic works. What else can you do?"
"Umm…" Shima paused, "I can summon and communicate with shikigami."
Shimazu's brow raised. "Oh? Do show."
The magical girl focused on her staff before planting her staff on the ground. A moment later, a pair of white semitransparent balls appeared next to her staff.
Shimazu looked over the balls in interest. "Interesting. These are a type of artificial shikigami. They don't have a conscious, but rather seem to be remotely controllable by you?"
Shima nodded, "Hai. I can manipulate them and have used them to create homing attacks."
"Is that so? Very interesting. Have you tried programming them to have independent action?"
Shima nodded, "Once. But it was pretty taxing and I wasn't able to keep it up for long."
"I see…" The researcher's brow scrounged as she looked over the data she had. "I think I have a theory but we would need to do some more research. How long do I have you for?"
"I…I have to go back to school this week. But my parents said I can come over the weekends. Just…"
Shimazu frowned. "Just what?"
"It's kinda far. Even by train." Shima admitted.
"Where do you live?"
"Sasebo."
"If that's your concern, then I'll have them set up a Floo in your family home." Shimazu dismissed her concerns, "Your contribution to my research is valuable enough that I can get that set up for you no problem."
"Th-thank you very much."
As she bowed, a loud crack noise was heard from the fireplace.
Shima spun around in response, her staff pointed and aimed. She knew that noise. It was the sound she had associated with Aurors and reservation guards teleporting in.
Standing before her was a young woman dressed in Auror robes with wand drawn and trained at the magical girl.
"Hold it!"
The two paused to see Shimazu stand between them. "Put down the weapons. No one is shooting in my lab without my permission!"
Shima made eye contact with the Auror before nodding. The Auror put away her wand while Shima put down her staff.
"Shima, this is my pupil, Kaya Sugihara. Kaya, this is Shima Isuzu. She's a magical girl who I'm currently studying. There will be no violence. You hear me?"
Shima obeyed, satisfied that the Auror was with the researcher. "I'm sorry for disrupting you."
The woman groaned, "It's fine. But you're a magical girl?"
Shima nodded, "H-hai. We're pretty new and I honestly-"
"You think you can help me resolve my magical girl problem?"
Shimazu and Shima stared at Kaya in surprise. "Magical girl problem?"
