Chapter 60: Moves of the Powerful New
Chapter 60: Moves of the Powerful

[POV Hiro Nakamura]

A forty-year-old man of unremarkable appearance calmly adjusted his shirt collar and once again examined the folder of papers lying on the desk. The setting sun's rays fell onto his workspace, and Hiro, who was checking the documents for the fourth time, glanced at the digital clock.

8:45 PM

Fifteen minutes left.

Hiro Nakamura, owner of the private detective agency "Baku," awaited his visitor with a composed expression. The only thing betraying his inner nerves was the tapping of his finger on the desk. A former employee of the Public Safety Commission had been running his own private detective agency for several years now. Over that time, "Baku" had built a reputation good enough that even some heroes in Japan's top hundred occasionally sought the agency's help.

Hiro might have been fired from the HPSC due to problems with his superiors, but that didn't erase the connections he'd built during his government career. Those connections had helped him handle many "gray" cases over the years, and sometimes even far darker ones...

"We'll find what's lost, protect your peace of mind."

The man recited his own agency's motto with self-irony, smiling bitterly.

"But who will protect my peace of mind?"

Nakamura had seen his share of ups and downs. He'd witnessed plenty hidden from the public eye, knew even more, and some theories he wouldn't even commit to paper. Knowing certain secrets could put you in a grave more reliably than a point-blank gunshot. Five years ago, one such secret had nearly cost him his life. That was when he'd met his benefactor, the one who'd pulled him out from under an acid "shower"...

"Long time no see, Nakamura-san. How are things? How's the family? Found any little dogs for lonely old ladies who can't sleep without their four-legged friends yet?"

Hiro winced at the reminder of one unpleasant case early in his career as a private detective. He looked at the visitor who'd appeared behind him with tired irritation. Behind a back that was against a WALL with no windows.

"I asked you not to do that."

The S-class villain, Ticci Micc, now lounging arrogantly in the visitor's chair, waved his hand as if shooing away flies.

"That wouldn't be any fun at all! You get so amusingly tense."

"So you don't want the information?"

Nakamura asked with an indifferent face, placing his hand on the folder.

"You don't understand jokes! We've known each other for years, and you still haven't learned about things like humor."

Nakamura opened his briefcase and began packing the documents on his desk.

"Oh, Oh. It is rude to treat your regular client that way, I'm practically a sponsor. Oh, God, how much yen have I left here!"

Hiro's eye twitched. The eccentricity of this villain sometimes gave him a nervous tic.

"Here's the information on the Tosaka conglomerate you requested. The Tosaka family, auctioneers, partners."

The man tossed the folder to the visitor. The clownish figure caught it with a theatrical flourish, almost falling off his chair. Hiro closed his eyes for a second.

"Why do all villains above A-class have to be completely insane?"

"As for the Scott family, Alice Scott and four-year-old Agnes Scott are considered dead."

Ticci Micc, who'd been rocking on his chair and flipping through the papers, froze for a fraction of a second. Then, settling in more comfortably and fanning himself with the folder, he shook his head in mock sorrow.

"How tragic. A great hero's family, gone like that. Oh, by the way, how did they die?"

"One week after the disappearance of Kaneki Scott, better known as the hero Omnipresent, Alice Scott and Agnes Scott were involved in a car accident. Both died instantly. Recently, after three years since his disappearance, Kaneki Scott was officially declared dead, and all family property passed to his wife's closest relatives, the Austins."

"And what about the bodies of Alice and Agnes?"

"Due to extensive damage, they were buried in closed caskets."

"How utterly tragic! I can't hold back my tears! Hmm."

The villain pulled out a handkerchief from somewhere and began noisily blowing his nose through his mask. Nakamura's expression remained impassive.

"A- and what about Omnipresent's 'friends'?"

The man loudly blew his nose into the handkerchief, the "actor from a failed theater."

"How are they?"

"Nothing new."

Hiro answered curtly, understanding the hint. Everything he'd managed to dig up about Omnipresent's recent activities had long since been given to his "regular client."

"Oh, this is all so sad. I can't take it anymore!"

The S-class villain jumped up from his chair, vigorously wiping "tears" with his handkerchief.

"I'm going to go cry into my pillow. Don't call me for a week, unless All Might puts on a pink tutu. If it's not pink, don't call!"

Ticci Micc ran out of the office, slamming the door loudly. Hiro Nakamura sat there with a twitching eyebrow. Then his shoulders slumped.

/ "Please, no. Spare me."

"Ooh. And here I thought you were tough. You were spitting acid so coolly."

The frog-headed man, who'd been backing away from the dark silhouette in fear, suddenly puffed out his cheeks and spat green liquid at his enemy. A hissing sound filled the room. The villain spun his head in panic, trying to find his attacker, until he fell after the inner tendon of his knee was cut. A boot pressed the screaming villain's head to the ground, preventing him from turning it.

"Still weak."

The short figure in the black mask with the crimson grin made a quick motion with a knife and slit the villain's throat. The man standing to the side, over two bloody corpses, watched in terror, barely holding back a groan of pain from the acid that had splashed onto his shoulder. \

"How corrupted the world has become, for children to become killers in it."

Not noticing the change in Ticci Micc's height over five years and failing to draw the appropriate conclusions would be a disgrace for a detective like him.

[POV from a third party]

In a dark room lit only by a glowing monitor, a pleasant female news anchor's voice rang out.

"...the number of injured has exceeded five thousand, and the death toll has reached 432. The joint investigative commission is still investigating the terrorist attack. The trial of those responsible for organizing the attack, particularly Engel Wolfram, the leader of the villain group, and David Shield, the famous scientist and Nobel laureate, has been postponed until all details of the I-Island attack and the full extent of the damage are determined. Meanwhile..."

Click.

The video report of the "Bloody Morning on I-Island" was paused. On the screen was David Shield in handcuffs, escorted by two police officers. But the frame also caught the figure of All Might, looking grimly at the scene.

"Where's your smile now, Yagi?"

A man, most of whose head was covered in scars, smiled. Dressed in a classic suit and connected to life support apparatus, he radiated an oppressive aura, despite his obvious blindness, damaged ears, and missing nasal cavity. Suddenly, one of the disconnected monitors lit up, showing the image of an old man in a lab coat with a thick mustache and large round glasses.

"All the Nomu for the League of Villains are ready."

"Good. You can hand them over to Kurogiri."

Nodding and saying nothing more, Darumo Ujiko disconnected. The man shifted his "gaze" to the screen with the paused video.

"It's time for the League to make its move, since haijima has made theirs. I can't fall behind my former student, can I?"
