The old man smiles. "I'm sure Shikamaru will be delighted to hear."

=

If Shikamaru is delighted to hear, he doesn't give much sign of it at your next meeting. Just a smile and a casual invitation to stay after lunch and draw with him before you go home.

This time it's fisticuffs that Yoshino has you practising. The lesson is far more interesting than you would have expected; you have had no formal education in boxing - taijutsu, they call it here - and having someone give you constructive criticism on form is rather novel. Though you must admit, Yoshino is a terribly abrasive woman. If she weren't your key to achieving independence you'd have few qualms about arranging an accident for her.

You are not permitted to spar with Shikamaru directly, as your speed makes him a poor match for you, so Bat is your training partner for the practical portion of the lesson.

The ANBU are a private security force working directly under the Hokage, from what you've managed to piece together from clues and bits of conversation; doubtless you warrant their protection only inasmuch as your 'tenant' requires guarding until such time as the 'landlord' is old enough and strong enough to fend for himself. As such, it isn't surprising that Owl would resent the assignment and Raccoon would treat it as an outlet for her maternal instincts.

Bat does neither of these things. Where Owl is cool and aloof and Raccoon is warm and affectionate, Bat is simply a consummate professional. She truly behaves as though protecting you is a serious endeavour that demands her full attention.

She does not avoid you, like Owl, but she speaks to you only when spoken to, or when circumstances require that she do so. When she does speak to you, it is the speech of a skilled independent worker to an employer, not the words of a nanny to a child or a servant to the young master.

You know little of her personality and nothing of her background, and you know that this is because she's deliberately withholding the information to both keep her identity from being compromised and prevent the 'innocent child' from over-identifying with a nameless assassin who might one day have to die for him.

You find her devotion to duty

[X] Dull. You have no use for a wind-up doll.

[X] Intriguing. You have many uses in mind for a wind-up doll - provided it is your hand that does the winding.

[X] Admirable. Such competence should always be encouraged where it is found, because lord knows it is rarer than diamonds.

As Yoshino thanks the silent, masked woman once again for her assistance, you consider how you should proceed with your attack.

[X] Gentlemanly. You must give the appearance of being an innocent child, after all, and an innocent child would not fight with the intent to permanently harm one of their caretakers.

[X] Properly; exert effort and make use of any tricks that come to mind. The entire point of training is to test one's limits. Besides, you might learn something about Bat's abilities.

[X] Unsportingly; unleash The World.

something tells me that even without going for the "intriguing" vote, Dio is still thinking about how to get such loyalty for himself, not doing so would be unthinkable for his character, right?

also, Ninja.

oh god, I just saw something on SB that reminded me of the "The World is FTL" discussion we had near the start of this thread.

It's not really on topic, but I just had to come here and share it.

It's just that everybody in JJBA is too dumb to know what a laser is, and is probably just making noises at each other anyways(being too stupid to actually talk).

This is what happens when people make a calculation that relies on everybody involved being too stupid to breathe. The very context established by the characters is questioned on the grounds of their staggering stupidity. If you're too dumb to use your FTL fists to punch a guy in his laser eye before it fires when he's announced he's firing his laser eye at you(and he's also dumb enough to announce he's firing his laser eye at you), and you are assumed to not be a vegetable relative to other characters, the guy with the laser eye is by extension rendered so stupid his claim of his laser eye being a laser eye is moot because he'd believe he had a laser eye if someone celotaped a live chicken to his face.

Ugh, Versus people. I don't know what horrible Platonic cesspit they live in where intelligence is defined by how closely one adheres to what they declare to be practical and cool, but I almost hope they all have children. See how long they hold on to that assurance of authority and cleverness after that.

Also, that person gives the impression of never having read JJBA. Grunting while saying nothing is DBZ's shtick; JJBA's is people never shutting the hell up.

Not nearly the dumbest thing I heard in a VS debate before, or even that involving JJBA. I honestly read an argument where someone tried to claim that Asuna from Negima would beat Gold Experience Requiem, because her anti-magic could cancel out its reality warping.

Well, hang on, is it conscious on her part, or is it an area of effect thing that just happens around her and she can't turn it off? Because they may have a point if it's the latter.

Even so... I'd hesitate to call anything in JJBA magic in the normal sense. The setting is made of "SCIENCE!", with increasingly larger quotation marks the more bullshit the abilities get.

What's the definition of magic in Negima?

well, if you could move fast enough to block Lazors with your hands, then standing around waiting for someone to say "imma shoot you with my nazi eye lazor" is pretty stupid.

Nah, just really damn arrogant like ... well Gilgamesh.

Kars probably wanted to judge exactly how refined/powerful the laser was; he isn't the kind of guy who stresses out over a little physical damage if it's obtained in the pursuit of science.

With about as much justification, honestly. Kars is pretty damn durable even before becoming the Ultimate Wubform.

I don't recall there being an actual definition, but Magic and Ki are two distinct energy types, and I don't recall her ever cancelling out Ki. Also IIRC, Stands in Jojo were stated to be psychic powers. Basically the guy tried to use the equivilancy rule to make Stands = Magic, and then that her Anti-Magic would basically cancel Stands.

If anything, the closest Jojo analogue would be Hamon, and even that is a stretch. Hamon, if anything, is closer to Ki than actual Magic. Also, last time I checked, you couldn't kill a wizard by attacking their spell, nor did you really see long latin incantations or 'MP' with Stand users.

The kanji used when Stands are first introduced spell yuumon, or roughly 'ghost ripple'. I think of them like an outward expression of a person's personality and desires, in which case psychic powers would be the closest description.

In Naruto terms, I guess hamon is powered by Yang chakra and Stands are powered by Yin chakra.

But yeah, all of this is just chatter, because if her spell-cancelling abilities are something she has to actually think about to use, she's already lost. Endgame Giorno is one of the single most broken motherfuckers in all of fiction.

Nah, it's constantly on or something IIRC. But yeah, the biggest giveaway that Stands aren't magic, is that A: The user generally recieves the damage their Stand takes; B: Can protect them without the user acting, or even being *aware*; and C: some Stands actually being sentient. Also note that a person's Stand isn't restricted to their body, as seen when Requiem started switching everyone's bodies, and you had Giorno's body using Aerosmith, and Diavolo's body using Sticky Fingers.

I kinda was torn up between this and Admirable, since I would think Dio would want as many puppets as he can.

[X] Gentlemanly. You must give the appearance of being an innocent child, after all, and an innocent child would not fight with the intent to permanently harm one of their caretakers.
Pfff- we could easily destroy this fool using The World. Since this is a friendly match, we can safely improve without risking ourselves harm. This also has the side effect of making us look like a 'good' guy and helping our cover.

Take note that Straights critisized Dio in part 2, for being too busy trying to figure out how his vampire powers worked, rather than trying to kill Jonathan as qickly as he could, so it's actually in character.

Quite. I like how that criticism highlights one of Straights' own flaws - his inability to think big-picture. What the hell was his plan for after he very publicly killed Joseph and half a dozen other people? Did he think Santana would just leave him be?

Queensbury rules, gents. We know our tricks already. The purpose of this is to learn new things. We can wait a little while before learning if our dirty tricks work on these 'ninja'.
