(Partially) fixing the tag system

I mark my threads complete on completion, but you're not allowed to comment on old threads without necroing so there's no real reason for me to maintain them. Once they're older than two-weeks I won't receive feedback.

no idea if it has been mentioned yet, and i may be wrong just from taking a quick glance, but "reverse moral sexuality" , "reverse sexual morality", "reversed sexual morality" , "rsm" all seem to have largely the same fics (granted, with a few standouts for each) is there any way to combine them?

Regarding the suggested tags thread / longer tags list threadmark:
Open to feedback with regard to how I formatted those threads.
Ideally there should be linkbacks to the full synonym list. Mostly to make it easier for people expecting something to be tagged a certain way who aren't familiar with what the suggested tag means to realize that it's the same thing. Particularly once the list gets longer, it'd be helpful to have a single page for the synonyms somewhere which you can just ctrl+F the tag you were going to use to find the canonical version.

I can absolutely keep a list of all the Synonym groups updated, but I'm not entirely sure I understand the utility you're pointing at. In regard to search, it doesn't matter whether they use the Canonised suggested tag or a Synonym for their thread. Could you explain more?

Basically, it's hard to know what those synonyms are unless you have the list. Anyone who writes the tag in a way which would require a new synonym is going to create a unique tag that's outside of the list, but XF2's tag auto-completion interface is pretty limited and often won't help avoid that. If there was a searchable list, it'd be much easier.

Some examples:
>If you write "tiny harem" {small harem}, none of the existing synonyms will come up. This example isn't so bad because you can search the expanded tag list for "harem" and find it. But if the tag doesn't have a convenient element in common it becomes much harder:
>If you write "ambiguous consent" {dub-con}, you won't be pointed to dub-con. But here searching is much harder: "consent" doesn't exist in the list (but does in the synonyms list), "dubious" doesn't exist in the tag list (ditto), if you search just "consen" you'll get 'consensual non-con' and 'consensual sex', and "con" while the best option to search for it is a common three character combination and won't scale well.

This is a pretty trivial concern at present since synonyms are only spread over two posts and you can currently read the entire list of suggested tags in a couple seconds, but still.

Regarding the "consensual non-con" tag: there are twice as many threads tagged "cnc" as using the canonical tag and all 8 "cnc" threads are consensual non-con. These can probably be unified.

Update:

Aleth has a testbed spun up for this add-on, and I'm doing a bunch of experiments on it so they can fix any bugs before putting it on the main forum.
Update:

Many bugs I found in the testbed regarding Synonyms and merges replicate in the main forum, and some break tags. I initially had the attitude of 'it'd be nice, and a massive timesaver, if we had a hard-merge option, but if it looks like it's going nowhere I'll just go back to doing what I can with the tools I have'. But now I'm wary of even touching those tools on the main forum until I've verified it won't break the involved tags, so I no longer have the option of making myself the only bottleneck to progress.

I'll let the thread know once I have assurance, but I have no ETA.

Sorry if this has already been noted, but I thought I should mention the various "English is not the author's first language" tags. I suspect those will be among the tags most prone to misspellings and grammatical errors for obvious reasons, in addition to the concept being complex enough that there isn't a good one-or-two word phrase for it, while being both common enough and important enough that it generally warrants getting a tag.

Ones I've seen that (I think) I remember off the top of my head:
English is not my mother language
English is not the author's first language
English is not my mother
English is a second language.

Also, as a hardcore acronym hater (not really, I just don't like them because they are effectively meaningless without context. I spent over a year not knowing what the fuck asoiaf was while having heard of A Song of Ice and Fire), I would like to request that no tags that get merged into one are acronyms. People new to a fandom, or to fanfiction in general, will not understand any given acronym.

Same with shortening things like Tensura from Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken. Whether the tag for that should be the full japanese name or the english name of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is something I will leave for others to decide (I think english makes more sense for an english site, I figure more people are likely to not understand what it is referring to if it is in japanese, even if some people are more used to seeing it that way).

In other words, please don't shorten things for merged tags. It will scare way prospective newcomers and confuse actual newcomers and old-timers will understand it either way.

Edit: I thought of an exception. CYOA and Choose Your Own Adventure have come to mean completely different things, with CYOA meaning a CYOA was used as a writing aid and Choose Your Own Adventure meaning that the story is made so that the reader can choose their own adventure. Of course, various tags within those groups should still be merged (such as the various Essence CYOA tags), but CYOA and Choose Your Own Adventure should stay separate.

Well, unless there's a distinct reason to keep them, it seems wise to merge anything about "femboy" or "trap" (both slurs in this day and age) into transfem protagonist.
Probably for the best to keep futa seperate, a lot of people like to write about that as a distinct thing, even with the obvious origins.
Genderbending protagonist may as well be merged into trans protagonist. No point splitting hairs, there.
Unless the main character is actively swapping back and forth between multiple bodies, ranma 1/2 style.

Edit: my cunning plan of getting vocal transphobes to spew dogwhistles at me so I can block them worked! Yippie!

And now for actual content- anything to do with alternate universe, IE AU, Alternate universe, divergent timeline, etc
Those tags should get merged.
Some specific aus should probably remain as their own tags, but mostly they can get squished together.
Under this logic, we should make futaprotag and maleprotagonist synonyms. Femaleprotag automatically brings up yuri quests, and any gay tag should just give you Worm fics

Also misspellings should be grouped together, as an actual suggestion to the thread. As an example, and to make good on my moniker for once: Beastality, beastiality, bestiality, etc. Beast, zoophilia, feral, could be grouped in there too
The anti-ntr tags. There's like ntr is trash, ntr is shit, ntr is a trash fetish, ntr begone, ntr is beaten violently.

I think blanketing them all under Anti-NTR would help, as there isn't really a need to have five tags all for the same thing.
Knowing how those threads are, they'd probably keep coming up with more anti-ntr tags to feel special
Femboy & Trap ≠ Transfemale character. Femboys are (essentially) the inverse of tomboys, and traps are male characters who both enjoy crossdressing and look like females. Which is definitely not the same as a trans female character, for obvious reasons.
and for people that want to group trans and futa together in a tag (looking at you, f95zone) I'll just say that if you absolutely insist on drawing a real world parallel, then the closest equivalent would be an idealization of intersex people. Not trans.

English is a second language.
Group them all into an "ESL" tag, imo

Pretty sure this would be a terrible experience to implement, but what about splitting some tags first, so that they can be properly merged?

Stuff like "worm au" where it could then be merged into both 'worm' and 'au' rather than it being an exception that doesn't quite fit in either one for the purposes of combining.

I don't get why bisexual male/female mc is being merged into bisexual protag. Sometimes you just want to read about guys fucking guys only for most of the stories when searching that tag to be about lesbian sex. And then you can't even exclude the mc's gender because it isn't tagged.

My contribution, and I'm pretty sure that there are even more useless tags:

futa

futa amazon

futa amazon later

futa character

futa characters

futa chromosomes

futa content

futa elements

futa eventually

futa everywhere

futanari (technically)

futanari and female only

futanari foxian beauty

futanari funtimes

futanari is also yuri

I'll let the thread know once I have assurance, but I have no ETA.
Code has been updated on the main forum. Praise and worship should be directed to @alethiophile, who once left the frozen wastes for the electric coast, and now swims in the ocean of bits.

I've done 91 tests with different tag states and operations, and 14 more general functionality experiments, so it's safe to say I'm assured I'm not going to break anything now.

I plan to write up a 'how-to' guide for how to use the tag system, both from an OP's perspective and a reader's, threadmark that here, and maybe in the 'Suggested Tags' thread too. There's quite a few useful quirks to it that you could easily miss or be confused by.

Relatedly, I'm also going to compile a list of the synonym groups with their respective canonical tags, as @doll suggested, and then threadmark that. This is actually relevant to search, which I'll explain in the 'how-to'.

Once I've done both of those, I'll finally do the second batch of mergers/synonyms. The head penguin wrote up a handy UI that lets me do them en masse, so I should be able to do all of it relatively quickly.

How-to Tags New
I'll start with how search works, and then give OP specific details after.

Suggested Canonical tags here (1, 2), and a longer list of tags here. A full list of all Synonym groups with their Canonical tag detailed here (will link when posted).

There are a lot of different areas where you can filter, but I can divide them into three groups relating to how they interact with the tag system.

In 'Advanced Search', found at the top right of any page-
image.jpg
-there are four options for non-staff: 'search everything', 'search threads', 'search profile posts', 'search tags'. Profile posts are irrelevant to tags, so ignoring that.

'Search tags'
You can only search for tags here, not exclude. Searching any tag in a Synonym group returns results for all tags in the Synonym group. This only displays up to 40 pages (800 results), and you cannot go past that; for context, 'self-insert' (with linked Synonyms) has '3,783' results. When tags have more than one page of results, threads with that tag added take an hour to be added to this search.

'Search everything' and 'Search threads'
You can search for and exclude tags simultaneously. Entering the Canonical tag of a Synonym group returns (or excludes) results for all tags in the Synonym group. Entering a Synonym returns (or excludes) results only for that specific Synonym. All results are displayed, and additions are updated instantly.

'Filters'

Can be found at the top right of any subforum, or the top right of 'Watched threads'-
image.jpg

-
image.jpg
You can search for and exclude tags simultaneously. With 'Without synonyms' unchecked, entering any tag in a Synonym group searches for (or excludes) all tags in that Synonym group. With 'Without synonyms' checked, entering any tag searches for (or excludes) that specific tag, disregarding Synonym groups. All results are displayed.

OPs
To add tags to a thread you've created, you click on the 'Thread Tools' option in the top right-
image.jpg
-then 'edit thread', where a box to add tags will be displayed. The maximum amount of tags you can have is 30.

Some tags will be 'hard-synonyms' of other tags, and attempting to add them to a thread will automatically convert them to the designated tag. This is so I don't have to play wack-a-mole with people recreating merged tags, and intended to be used only for semantically identical cases. If this happens, and you want to keep the tag you originally added, you can post about it in this thread and I can revoke the hard-synonym status (and possibly make it a normal synonym).

If you create a new tag, and want it linked to another Canonical tag, make the request here too.

(Think that's everything?)

Many of those are actually different tags that should not be grouped together. for example
futa on female

futa on male

futa on shota
are each different things someone might search for.

You do have a bunch that should be merged, but also many that should not.
