No.

No, you don't get to take Link away from the "Fighter" classification.

You have wronged so hard you did not right at all.

Link uses all kinds of weapons to their best effect to beat up a wide variety of enemies.

He is THE fighter.
But he's not a Big Stupid Fighter. He has a wide array of other skills ranging from stealth to ride to sail depending on the incarnation, and pretty much all of them have Use Magic Device up the wazoo. I'd say he's probably a fighter/rogue gestalt.

Eh, whatever.

What's a representative sample spread of character options in a quest where people picked the "wizard" over a "fighter" or "rogue"?

If you define Fighter as DnD Fighter and playing it straight, I find it very unlikely you'll find someone picked it up.

OTOH, if you relax the classification, there may be more.

I'd say Link is pure rogue. For powerful foes, he dodges around and targets the opponent's weak spots for critical damage. He's a puzzle solver, getting around traps and such. He uses a wide variety of magical items. He does not straight up tank opponents.

EDIT: D&D is terrible.
D&D changed my life.

The protagonist of the Thief games is a pure rogue. Games like D&D muddy the waters by giving absolutely everyone combat ability. Link is a Hero. In the Warrior/Wizard/Rogue trichotomy, he's a Warrior. He's a sword-and-shield weilding, horse-riding, arrow-shooting, chasm-jumping, face-stabbing fighter, and he's awesome for it.

He picks up big rocks and throws them at people.

The jack-of-trades/generalist class for 3.5 D&D is the Factotum. Even in D&D the Warblade does almost everything the fighter does, but better and more interesting.

The Cleric and Druid are also a generalists.

They just happen to be better at things than most specialists. :p

EDIT: The difference is that the Factotum and Bard are supposed to be generalists.

The Bard is a throwback to previous versions, since it has been in every version of D&D that I know of.

I think it would have been better for it to be a prestige class instead of a base class, tbh.
